Fit a standard starter or a normal flooded battery and it will fail early or throw stop-start faults. Differences within the 2016-2021 generation

Mounting bolts are 14 mm heads and the B+ nut is 12 mm on all three engines. On the 1.6 T-GDI you may also need to unclip a charge-air pipe or heat shield (10 mm bolts) for a clear hand path, and turbo cars need a longer cool-down before you reach in. ISG-equipped cars require the heavy-duty ISG starter and an AGM battery, not the standard units used on 2.0 and 2.4 non-ISG models.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Plug in a memory saver if you want to keep radio presets.
  2. Open the hood and disconnect the battery negative cable with a 10 mm socket. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post. Wait a few minutes.
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle at the factory lift points and set it securely on jack stands. If you want more room, remove the front driver-side wheel (21 mm lug nuts) and pull back the inner fender liner.
  4. Remove the lower engine splash shield: 10 mm bolts plus plastic push clips, removed with a trim tool. Set the hardware aside in a cup.
  5. Locate the starter on the rear face of the engine at the transmission bellhousing, toward the driver's side. Clean loose dirt off it so nothing drops into the connector.
  6. Pull back the rubber boot on the B+ stud and remove the 12 mm nut. Lift the heavy battery cable off the stud and move it clear. Note the washer order.
  7. Disconnect the S (solenoid) wire โ€” on most TL starters this is a small push-on connector with a locking tab; some are a 10 mm nut. Release the tab, do not yank the wire.
  8. Loosen the two 14 mm starter mounting bolts. The lower one is usually straightforward; the upper one normally needs a 12 in extension with a wobble. Support the starter with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  9. Work the starter straight off its locating dowel/nose register and out through the gap under the intake/subframe. If it is seized to the register, tap it gently with a pry bar โ€” do not lever on the plastic solenoid.
  10. Compare old and new units: nose length, mounting ear spacing, terminal position, tooth count and ISG vs standard rating must match. Clean the bellhousing mating face so the new starter sits flat.
  11. Fit the new starter onto the dowel, start both 14 mm bolts by hand to avoid crossing threads in the aluminum, then torque to spec alternately.
  12. Reconnect the S-terminal until the lock clicks. Fit the B+ cable with a clean eyelet, tighten the 12 mm nut to spec, add a little dielectric grease and seat the rubber boot fully over the stud.
  13. Refit the splash shield, wheel liner and wheel. Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern to 65-79 ft-lb.
  14. Lower the vehicle, reconnect the battery negative and tighten the clamp. Start the engine โ€” it should crank crisply with no grinding or whirring.
  15. Recheck the B+ nut and mounting bolts after the first few starts, and clear any stored codes if the battery disconnect set them.

No. On the TL Tucson the starter sits on the rear of the block at the bellhousing and there is no usable path from above. You need to raise the car, drop the lower splash shield and work from underneath.

How do I know it's the starter and not the battery?

Load-test the battery first โ€” a weak battery gives the same rapid clicking. If the battery is good, headlights stay bright and you get one solid click or nothing at all with the key in START, the starter solenoid or motor is the likely culprit.
