On the 2.5L A25A-FKS Camry this is a straightforward job: drop the plastic under-covers, pull one 12 mm terminal nut, unplug the solenoid wire and back out two 14 mm bolts. Most of the time goes into the belly pan fasteners and getting an extension and swivel onto the blind upper bolt. The 3.5L V6 is a different animal โ€” the starter lives in the valley of the V under the intake surge tank, so the airbox, throttle body and manifold all have to come off, and you should buy intake gaskets before you start.

The mistake people make most often is buying a starter for a no-crank that was really a tired 12V battery or a corroded main cable. Load-test the battery and do a voltage-drop test on the B-terminal cable first. The second mistake is forgetting the negative battery cable: the B-terminal stud is unfused and live, and a slipped socket there makes sparks instantly.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are the same on both gas engines โ€” 14 mm M10 mounting bolts, 12 mm B-terminal nut โ€” but access differs completely: the 2.5L A25A-FKS starter comes out from underneath after removing the lower splash shields, while the 3.5L 2GR-FKS starter is under the intake manifold and requires 10 mm, 12 mm, hex and Torx bits to strip the top of the engine. Hybrid AXVH70/71 models have no starter motor; the engine is started by MG1 in the transaxle, so this job does not apply.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the starter is actually the fault: load-test the battery, check for 12V at the solenoid S-terminal while cranking, and do a voltage-drop test on the main cable. A weak 12V battery is the most common cause of a no-crank on this generation.
  2. Hybrid models: stop here. The AXVH70/71 has no starter motor โ€” the engine is spun by the MG1 motor-generator inside the transaxle. Diagnose the hybrid system instead of buying a starter.
  3. Chock the rear wheels, then loosen the 10 mm negative battery terminal nut and remove the cable. Tuck it aside so it cannot fall back onto the post.
  4. 2.5L (A25A-FKS): raise the front of the car with the floor jack at the factory jack point and set both jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe. Never work under a jack alone.
  5. 2.5L: remove the plastic engine under-cover / lower splash shields โ€” a mix of 10 mm bolts, Phillips screws and push-in clips. Lay the fasteners out in order.
  6. 2.5L: locate the starter on the front/lower face of the engine at the transaxle bellhousing. Remove the 12 mm nut and lift the main battery cable off the B-terminal, then press the tab and unplug the solenoid signal connector.
  7. 2.5L: remove the two 14 mm M10 mounting bolts with an extension and swivel. Support the starter as the second bolt comes out, then work it out of the bellhousing pocket, angling it past the wiring and subframe.
  8. 3.5L V6 (2GR-FKS): work from the top. Remove the engine cover, air cleaner assembly and intake duct, disconnect the throttle body wiring and hoses, then unbolt and remove the intake surge tank/manifold. Plug the open ports with clean rags.
  9. 3.5L V6: with the manifold off, the starter is visible in the valley bolted to the transaxle. Remove the 12 mm B-terminal nut and cable, unplug the solenoid connector, then remove the two 14 mm mounting bolts and lift the starter straight up and out.
  10. Compare old and new starters: nose length, drive gear tooth count, terminal stud positions and connector type must match. Scrape the mounting face clean โ€” it carries the starter's ground.
  11. Fit the new starter into its pocket, start both 14 mm bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to spec. Do not over-torque into alloy threads.
  12. Reconnect the solenoid connector until it clicks, clean the cable lug, fit the cable to the B-terminal and torque the 12 mm nut gently. Add a smear of dielectric grease.
  13. V6: reinstall the intake manifold with new gaskets, torque in the factory sequence, and reconnect every hose, vacuum line and connector before closing up. 2.5L: refit the under-covers and lower the car.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery cable and torque the clamp. Turn the key to ON without cranking for a few seconds, then start the engine.
  15. Idle may be slightly rough or the transmission may shift oddly for the first few miles while the ECU relearns after the power interruption. Clear any stored codes with a scan tool if needed.
