Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

1.5L L15BE turbo and 2.4L K24W both use two 14 mm bellhousing bolts and 10/12 mm terminal hardware, but the starters themselves are different part numbers and not interchangeable โ€” order by VIN. The 1.5T is tighter: you often have to shift a charge-air pipe or coolant hose bracket aside, while on the 2.4L the upper bolt can usually be reached from above with a long extension. The CR-V Hybrid has no starter motor; it cranks on the traction motor/generator.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the fault first: with a multimeter check battery voltage (12.4V+), then check for voltage at the starter B+ stud and at the S terminal while a helper cranks. A click with full B+ present and no crank points to the starter; slow crank can be cables or battery.
  2. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10 mm socket. Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back.
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack at the front subframe jacking point and set jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe rails. Remove the front wheel on the starter side if you want extra access.
  4. Remove the engine undercover: a mix of 10 mm bolts and plastic push-pin clips around the perimeter. Pop the clips with a trim tool rather than prying with a screwdriver.
  5. Locate the starter on the front (radiator) side of the engine at the transmission bellhousing. On the 1.5T you may also need to loosen or move the lower intake/charge pipe or a coolant hose bracket; on the 2.4L the upper bolt is best reached from above between the engine and firewall-side hoses.
  6. Pull back the rubber boot on the B+ stud, remove the nut (10 or 12 mm) and lift the heavy battery cable off. Then unplug or unbolt the small S-terminal wire from the solenoid.
  7. Remove the two 14 mm mounting bolts. Support the starter as the second bolt comes out โ€” it is heavier than it looks and the nose is dowelled into the bellhousing.
  8. Work the starter out toward the front of the car, rotating the nose past the axle/subframe. Note the exact routing and clocking before it clears.
  9. Compare old and new units: nose length, gear tooth count, solenoid clocking and terminal positions must match.
  10. Clean the mating face on the bellhousing and the battery cable eyelet with a wire brush. Corrosion here causes slow cranking after the job.
  11. Fit the new starter, start both 14 mm bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminum, then torque to 33 ft-lb (45 Nm) or the manual's figure.
  12. Reattach the S-terminal wire, then the B+ cable; torque the B+ nut lightly (about 7 ft-lb) โ€” overtightening snaps the stud. Apply dielectric grease and refit the rubber boot.
  13. Refit any hoses or ducts you moved, reinstall the undercover and wheel, torque lugs to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern, lower the vehicle.
  14. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and start the engine. If the battery was down for a while, the idle may hunt briefly and the radio/clock may need resetting; let it idle to relearn.
  15. Recheck for a tight crank, no grinding, and no starter engaging after the engine runs.
