On the T1-platform Silverado the starter is one of the more forgiving jobs under the truck. It lives low on the passenger side at the engine-to-transmission joint, held by two M10 bolts that take a 15 mm socket, with one fat battery cable on a 13 mm stud and one small signal wire. No draining, no exhaust removal on the V8s, and there's enough ground clearance on most trims that you may not even need to lift a 4x4 — though you'll be happier if you do.
The two things people get wrong are electrical and parts-matching. Skipping the negative battery disconnect turns the 13 mm B+ nut into a live terminal that will arc hard against the block. And trucks equipped with auto stop-start use a heavier-duty starter than trucks without it; order by VIN or you'll be back under there. Also expect auto stop-start to be unavailable for a few drive cycles after the battery is reconnected while the battery sensor relearns — that's normal, not a fault.

Fastener sizes are the same across the generation: 15 mm starter mounting bolts, 13 mm B+ nut, 10 mm negative battery clamp. What changes is access — the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 V8s are the easiest reach from below, the 2.7L L3B turbo four threads its starter bolts into aluminum so a torque wrench matters more, and the 3.0L LM2 Duramax inline-six has the tightest access with heat shielding and plumbing in the way, so plan on a swivel extension and extra time. Starter part numbers also differ: auto stop-start equipped trucks (most 2.7L and many V8s) use a reinforced unit.

The 15 mm starter bolts, 13 mm B+ nut, 10 mm battery clamp and the 37 ft-lb (50 Nm) bolt torque are standard across GM's Gen V small-block and T1 applications and I'm confident in them; verify the exact starter location, shim usage and B+/S-terminal torque for the 3.0L LM2 Duramax and 2.7L L3B in a service manual for your VIN, since those two differ most from the V8 layout.
Low on the passenger side of the engine, where the block meets the transmission bellhousing. You access it from underneath after dropping the front lower splash shield or air dam; on the 3.0L Duramax it sits slightly lower and further back.
Both starter mounting bolts are M10 with a 15 mm head, best removed with a deep 15 mm 6-point socket on a 3/8 in drive and a 6-10 in extension. The positive cable nut is 13 mm and the battery terminal clamp is 10 mm.
37 ft-lb (50 Nm) for the two M10 mounting bolts. Use a torque wrench rather than an impact, especially on the 2.7L L3B where the bolts thread into aluminum.
No programming or scan tool is needed for the starter itself. After reconnecting the battery you'll reset the clock and radio presets, and auto stop-start may stay inactive for a few drive cycles while the battery sensor relearns state of charge.
