On the T1-platform Silverado the starter is one of the more forgiving jobs under the truck. It lives low on the passenger side at the engine-to-transmission joint, held by two M10 bolts that take a 15 mm socket, with one fat battery cable on a 13 mm stud and one small signal wire. No draining, no exhaust removal on the V8s, and there's enough ground clearance on most trims that you may not even need to lift a 4x4 — though you'll be happier if you do.

The two things people get wrong are electrical and parts-matching. Skipping the negative battery disconnect turns the 13 mm B+ nut into a live terminal that will arc hard against the block. And trucks equipped with auto stop-start use a heavier-duty starter than trucks without it; order by VIN or you'll be back under there. Also expect auto stop-start to be unavailable for a few drive cycles after the battery is reconnected while the battery sensor relearns — that's normal, not a fault.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are the same across the generation: 15 mm starter mounting bolts, 13 mm B+ nut, 10 mm negative battery clamp. What changes is access — the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 V8s are the easiest reach from below, the 2.7L L3B turbo four threads its starter bolts into aluminum so a torque wrench matters more, and the 3.0L LM2 Duramax inline-six has the tightest access with heat shielding and plumbing in the way, so plan on a swivel extension and extra time. Starter part numbers also differ: auto stop-start equipped trucks (most 2.7L and many V8s) use a reinforced unit.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the diagnosis first: check battery state of charge and load, and look for corrosion or a loose B+ cable. A clicking or single-click no-crank with good voltage at the starter points to the starter; slow crank often means battery or cables.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, plug in a memory saver if you're using one, then loosen the 10 mm negative battery terminal clamp and pull the cable off. Do not pry on the battery sensor attached to the negative cable — unbolt the clamp and lift it straight off.
  3. Raise the front of the truck with the jack at a rated lift point and set 3-ton jack stands under the frame rails. Never work under it on the jack alone.
  4. Remove the front lower splash shield / air dam and any lower engine shield. These use a mix of 7 mm and 10 mm head bolts, 15 mm plastic nuts and push-pin clips depending on trim; a trim tool saves the clips. On 2.7L and 3.0L models you may also want to pull the plastic engine cover for top-side light.
  5. Locate the starter low on the passenger side of the block where the engine meets the transmission bellhousing. On the 3.0L LM2 Duramax the starter sits lower and further rearward and is tighter to reach — a swivel extension is close to mandatory there.
  6. Clear the way: unclip any wiring harness retainers on the starter body and move the transmission cooler line brackets or heat shield if they block a socket. Note how everything routes before you disturb it.
  7. Disconnect the solenoid signal wire. Most T1 trucks use a push-on connector with a small red or black lock tab — lift the tab with a pick and pull straight off. If yours is a nut-and-eyelet, use the 8 mm socket.
  8. Remove the 13 mm nut from the B+ stud and lift the heavy positive cable off. Tuck it aside so it can't touch anything — it is live even with the battery disconnected if you skipped step 2. Do not skip step 2.
  9. Loosen and remove the two 15 mm M10 starter bolts. Support the starter with your free hand as the second bolt comes out; these units are 8-12 lb and will drop.
  10. Work the starter out past the exhaust and crossmember, rotating it as needed. If there are shims behind the starter nose, keep them and reinstall them in the same place.
  11. Compare the new starter to the old one: nose depth, mounting ears, stud orientation and connector style must match. GM used several units across this generation, including a heavier-duty starter on auto stop-start trucks.
  12. Clean the block mounting surface and the B+ cable eyelet with a wire brush. Corrosion at the eyelet is a common cause of repeat 'bad starter' complaints.
  13. Fit the new starter, start both bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque both to 37 ft-lb (50 Nm).
  14. Reconnect the B+ cable and snug the 13 mm nut, then click the solenoid connector on until the lock tab seats. Add a light film of dielectric grease to the stud and connector. Re-secure all harness clips and any shield you moved.
  15. Reinstall the splash shield and lower the truck. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the clamp.
  16. Start the engine. Expect the first crank to be slightly longer while fuel pressure builds. Listen for any grinding or whirring after start — that means flywheel engagement trouble, so shut it down and recheck shims and bolt seating. Reset the clock and radio presets if you didn't use a memory saver; auto stop-start may stay disabled until the battery sensor relearns state of charge over a few drive cycles.

Watch out

The 15 mm starter bolts, 13 mm B+ nut, 10 mm battery clamp and the 37 ft-lb (50 Nm) bolt torque are standard across GM's Gen V small-block and T1 applications and I'm confident in them; verify the exact starter location, shim usage and B+/S-terminal torque for the 3.0L LM2 Duramax and 2.7L L3B in a service manual for your VIN, since those two differ most from the V8 layout.
