On the second-gen Cruze with the 1.4L turbo LE2, spark plugs are one of the easiest jobs on the car. There are no plug wires and no four separate coils — one coil cassette bolts to the top of the cam cover with four 8 mm bolts, and lifting it off exposes all four plugs in a row. Pop the plastic engine cover off, unplug one connector, four bolts, and you're looking at them. Interval is generally around 60,000 miles, and direct-injected turbo engines get noticeably smoother when worn plugs come out.

The things people get wrong: doing it on a warm engine and pulling threads out of the aluminum head, skipping the compressed air so grit falls in a cylinder, and cranking the coil cassette bolts down like they're suspension hardware. Torque the plugs with an actual torque wrench, snug the coil bolts to a low in-lb spec, and put a little dielectric grease in the boots so they come off easily next time.

Differences within the 2016-2019 generation

Only the 1.4L turbo LE2 gasoline engine has spark plugs — all sizes here (8 mm coil bolts, 5/8 in plug socket) apply to it across 2016-2019, hatch and sedan, all trims. The 1.6L LH7 diesel (2017-2019) has no spark plugs; it uses glow plugs, typically a 10 mm deep socket on the glow plug body with intake and harness removal first, and they are commonly seized. The later 1.5L LFV in Cruze-related GM cars is not offered in the 2016-2019 US Cruze.

How the job goes

  1. Work on a fully cold engine. A hot aluminum head is much easier to damage and the plugs can seize.
  2. Optional but recommended: disconnect the battery negative terminal with a 10 mm socket. On this car there is no battery registration requirement, but the radio/idle relearn may reset.
  3. Pull the plastic engine cover straight up off its rubber grommets (it is push-fit, no bolts). A plastic pry tool helps if the grommets are tight.
  4. Wipe the top of the cam cover clean and blast off loose dirt with brake cleaner and a rag, then air.
  5. Unplug the ignition coil cassette connector: press the red/black lock tab, then squeeze and pull. Unclip the harness from any retainers on the coil.
  6. Remove the four 8 mm M6 bolts holding the coil cassette to the cam cover. Keep them together — they are short and easy to lose down the back of the engine.
  7. Lift the cassette straight up and off. It may need a firm, even pull to release the four rubber boots. Set it down boots-up and inspect for cracks, carbon tracking or oil in the boots.
  8. Blow out each spark plug well with compressed air (glasses on) or vacuum it. Anything left in the well drops into the cylinder when the plug comes out.
  9. Using the 5/8 in thin-wall plug socket with extensions, break each plug loose and remove it. Turn slowly; if it binds, stop, let it cool completely, and back it out in stages.
  10. Compare old to new plugs. Check the new plugs' gap with a gauge (about 0.028-0.031 in) but do not pry on iridium electrodes — if a plug is out of spec, replace it rather than bend it.
  11. Start each new plug by hand, using the socket and extension without the ratchet, so you feel the threads engage cleanly. Never force a plug into the aluminum head.
  12. Torque the plugs to approx. 15 ft-lb (20 Nm) — verify in the service manual. Do not guess by feel on an aluminum head.
  13. Smear a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, replace any cracked boots, and set the cassette back down squarely so all four boots seat with a light click.
  14. Install the four M6 bolts and torque to about 89 in-lb (10 Nm). Snug only — these strip the cam cover easily.
  15. Reconnect the coil connector until the lock clicks, reattach harness clips, refit the engine cover, reconnect the battery.
  16. Start the engine and let it idle a minute. Expect a slightly rough first 10-20 seconds if the battery was disconnected. Check for a misfire or CEL, then road test.

Watch out

The 8 mm coil bolts, the push-fit engine cover and the single coil cassette layout are correct for the 2016-2019 LE2; the 5/8 in (16 mm) plug hex and the ~15 ft-lb plug torque should be confirmed against your plug's packaging and a GM service manual, since some GM small-displacement turbo plugs use a 14 mm hex.
