The mistake people make is doing this on a warm engine and then leaning on the plug with a long ratchet. Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

Socket sizes are the same across the generation: 9/16 in (14 mm) plugs and 7 mm coil bolts (a few coils use an 8 mm head, so carry both). The difference is access โ€” the 5.0 V8 needs only the engine cover off, while 2.7/3.5 EcoBoost and PowerBoost also require removing the air cleaner outlet pipe and charge-air tubing and benefit strongly from a wobble extension. Plug part numbers and gap differ between the EcoBoost V6s and the 5.0, so order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. Work on a cold engine. Aluminum heads and hot plugs are a bad combination โ€” let it sit several hours if it has been run.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable (8 mm or 10 mm nut) and let it sit a few minutes. On PowerBoost, also leave the vehicle off for at least 5 minutes and do not touch any orange high-voltage cable.
  3. Pull the engine appearance cover. Most lift straight off rubber grommets; support the front edge and pull evenly so you do not tear a grommet.
  4. 2.7/3.5 EcoBoost and PowerBoost: loosen the clamps and remove the air cleaner outlet pipe and the charge-air tubing/resonator that cross over the engine. Cap or cover open intake openings with a clean rag. Move wiring harness retainers aside rather than stretching them.
  5. Work one cylinder at a time. Press the release tab and unplug the coil connector, remove the single 7 mm coil bolt, then twist the coil slightly and pull it straight up out of the plug well.
  6. Blow or vacuum the plug well clean before the socket goes in. Any grit in there ends up in the cylinder.
  7. Fit the 9/16 in thin-wall plug socket on an extension, seat it fully on the plug hex, and break it loose. If it feels gritty coming out, work it slowly, back and forth.
  8. Compare the old plug to the new one: check gap, insulator condition, and look for oil or fuel fouling. Heavy oil in the well usually means a leaking valve cover or coil boot seal.
  9. Check the new plug's gap against spec without bending the ground strap or touching the iridium tip. Do not use anti-seize โ€” Ford plugs are plated and the torque spec assumes dry threads.
  10. Start each plug by hand or with the socket on an extension only (no ratchet) until it turns freely several turns. If it binds, back it out and try again โ€” cross-threading an aluminum head is the expensive mistake here.
  11. Torque the plug to spec with a torque wrench, about 15 ft-lb / 20 Nm unless your manual says otherwise. Do not eyeball it.
  12. Wipe the coil boot, apply a thin film of dielectric grease inside it, push the coil down until it seats on the plug, install and torque the 7 mm bolt lightly, and reconnect the connector until it clicks.
  13. Repeat for all cylinders. On the EcoBoost V6 the three rear plugs are the hardest โ€” a wobble extension and stubby ratchet make the difference.
  14. Reinstall intake and charge-air tubing, tighten all clamps, and make sure no clamp or rag is left in the intake path.
  15. Reconnect the battery, reinstall the engine cover, start the engine, and let it idle. Expect a slightly rough first few seconds. Scan for codes and road test; on EcoBoost, check for boost leaks (whistle or hiss under load) from a clamp you left loose.
