The 5.7L Hemi has 16 plugs — two per cylinder — so you pull eight coils and unscrew 16 plugs, with the rear cylinders on both banks being the awkward ones. The 3.6L Pentastar is a quick six-plug job once you move the intake tube out of the way. The 3.0L EcoDiesel has no spark plugs, only glow plugs.

The thing people get wrong is torque and thread care. These are aluminum heads and a 13 ft-lb plug spec feels alarmingly light with a long extension in your hand — use an actual torque wrench, skip the anti-seize, and always start the plug by hand. The second most common mistake on the Hemi is swapping two coil connectors and chasing a misfire code afterward, which is why you do one cylinder at a time.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

5.7L Hemi eTorque: 16 plugs with a 5/8 in (16 mm) hex, coils retained by 8 mm bolts, 13 ft-lb. 3.6L Pentastar eTorque: 6 plugs with a 14 mm (9/16 in) hex, also 8 mm coil bolts, and you need to loosen the intake tube clamp for the front bank. 3.0L EcoDiesel: no spark plugs — glow plugs instead, a different procedure requiring intake removal.

How the job goes

  1. Work on a fully cold engine. Hot aluminum heads plus steel plug threads is how threads get pulled.
  2. Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal (10 mm). Leave the 48V eTorque battery and its orange cabling alone — do not disturb or open any orange-shielded connectors.
  3. 3.6L: pull the plastic engine cover, loosen the intake tube clamp at the throttle body and move the airbox/tube aside for front-bank access. 5.7L: remove the engine cover if fitted and set aside any harness clips over the coils.
  4. Blow or vacuum dirt out of each coil area before disturbing anything.
  5. Unlock and unplug the coil connector (press the red/black lock tab, do not yank the wire), remove the single 8 mm coil bolt, then twist and lift the coil out. Work one cylinder at a time so you can't mix up connectors.
  6. 5.7L note: each cylinder has two plugs, one per side of the head. The coil on top feeds its own plug and the opposite bank's plug via a short lead in some layouts — trace and label boots as you go.
  7. Blow out the plug well again, then break each plug loose with the thin-wall socket on a wobble extension. If a plug is stubborn, let it cool completely and work it back and forth rather than forcing it.
  8. Compare each old plug to the new one, and note the cylinder — oil-fouled or ash-covered plugs tell you about seals and valve guides.
  9. Check the gap on new plugs with a wire gauge (0.043 in on the 5.7L). Do not bend iridium/platinum tips; if the gap is wrong, get different plugs.
  10. Thread new plugs in by hand using the socket on an extension with no ratchet until they seat, then torque: 13 ft-lb on the 5.7L, per-manual spec on the 3.6L. No anti-seize — the plugs have a plated coating and anti-seize skews the torque reading in aluminum heads.
  11. Wipe a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, reinstall the coil, tighten the 8 mm bolt snug only, and click the connector fully home.
  12. Reinstall the intake tube/airbox and engine cover, reconnect the battery, then start the engine and let it idle. A brief rough idle or eTorque/stop-start message after a battery reset is normal until the system relearns.
  13. Test drive and scan for codes. Any P030x misfire code points straight at the cylinder you just touched — usually an unseated connector or a cross-connected coil.

Watch out

The 5/8 in plug hex and 8 mm coil bolt on the 5.7L Hemi and the 14 mm plug hex on the 3.6L Pentastar are well established, and 13 ft-lb is the long-standing Hemi plug spec; confirm the 3.6L plug torque and coil bolt values and your exact plug part number by VIN before assembly.
