On the 2.5L A25A-FKS and the hybrid's A25A-FXS, this is one of the easiest modern four-cylinder plug jobs: pop the cover, four coils out with a 10 mm socket, four plugs out with a 14 mm plug socket. Most people are done in under an hour with hand tools they already own. The plugs are long-life iridium, so you're typically only doing this around 120,000 miles.

The 3.5L 2GR-FKS is a completely different job. The front three plugs are easy; the rear three sit under the intake surge tank, which means draining nothing but removing hoses, brackets and the manifold itself, and buying gaskets before you start. The thing people get wrong on every version is torque — these plugs go into aluminum heads at a low figure, and cranking them down by feel is how threads get pulled.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

All XV70 engines use a 14 mm hex iridium plug and 10 mm ignition coil bolts, so the core socket sizes are identical; the 2.5L and hybrid have 4 plugs, the 3.5L has 6. The difference is access: the 3.5L 2GR-FKS rear bank needs the intake surge tank removed (extra 10 mm and 12 mm sockets, hose clamp pliers and a new gasket set), while the four-cylinders need nothing beyond removing the top cover. Bring a 16 mm (5/8 in) plug socket as a backup only if aftermarket plugs may have been fitted previously.

How the job goes

  1. Work on a cold engine. Hot aluminum heads are easy to damage and hot plugs can gall the threads.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal (10 mm) if you want to avoid stored misfire codes. On the hybrid, switch off the READY mode, remove the key, and wait — the 12V aux battery is in the trunk on hybrids; treat the orange high-voltage cabling as off-limits.
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover. On the 2.5L it pulls off the ball studs or comes off with a couple of 10 mm nuts; on the 3.5L the cover lifts off after removing its fasteners.
  4. Clean the top of the cam cover, then blow or vacuum dirt out of each plug well area.
  5. Unplug each ignition coil connector by pressing the lock tab, then remove the 10 mm coil bolt and pull the coil straight up with a slight twist. Lay the coils out in cylinder order.
  6. 2.5L/hybrid: all four wells are now open — continue to plug removal. 3.5L: the front bank (three coils, radiator side) is accessible now; the rear bank requires removing the air intake, throttle body connections, PCV and brake booster hoses, wiring brackets and the intake surge tank/manifold. Label hoses, bag the bolts by location, and cover the open intake ports with rags.
  7. Fit the 14 mm plug socket on an extension (add the wobble extension where the angle is tight) and break each plug loose. Pull the plug straight out; if it feels gritty going out, stop, blow the well again.
  8. Compare the old plug to the new one: same reach, same hex, same heat range. Check the new plug's gap visually — do not bend the ground strap on an iridium plug.
  9. Start each new plug by hand using the rubber hose trick, then run it down until seated. Never force a plug with the ratchet from the start — the heads are aluminum. Toyota does not call for anti-seize on these plugs.
  10. Torque each plug to 13 ft-lb (18 Nm), verifying the figure in the service manual for your engine.
  11. Put a thin smear of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, seat the coils fully, install the 10 mm bolts at about 7 ft-lb (10 Nm), and click each connector home.
  12. 3.5L: reinstall the surge tank with new gaskets, torque per the manual in the specified sequence, and reconnect every hose, clamp and connector you removed.
  13. Reinstall the engine cover, reconnect the battery, then start the engine and let it idle a minute. Check for a smooth idle and no misfire light. Clear any codes set during the job and take a short test drive.

The 10 mm coil bolt, 14 mm plug hex and the requirement to remove the surge tank for the 3.5L rear bank are solid for XV70; confirm the exact plug part number against your VIN and confirm the plug and intake manifold torque figures in the Toyota service information before final tightening.
