Tools you need for spark plugs on a 2018-2022 Honda Accord

Easy ยท 45-75 minutes ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 14 mm thin-wall magnetic spark plug socket
  2. 3/8 in ratchet with 6 in extension
  3. 8 mm socket for coil bolts
  4. Torque wrench, 5-25 ft-lb range
  5. 10 mm socket for engine cover

On the 10th-gen Accord, all three powertrains โ€” the 1.5 turbo, the 2.0 turbo and the Hybrid's Atkinson 2.0 โ€” use four coil-on-plug ignition coils sitting in a straight line under a plastic engine cover. Nothing has to be pulled off the intake side, so this is genuinely a one-ratchet job: cover off, four connectors unclipped, four small coil bolts out, four plugs out with a thin-wall 14 mm plug socket on a 6 in extension.

The two things people get wrong are torque and cleanliness. Honda's spec is around 13 ft-lb, which feels almost undone compared to older cars, and people crank plugs into a hot aluminum head until the threads give. Second, they yank the coils and go straight in with a socket without blowing the wells out, and grit falls past the plug into the cylinder. Let the engine cool fully, clean each well, and torque with a wrench that actually reads accurately down in the low teens.

Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

Socket sizes are effectively the same across the generation: 14 mm thin-wall plug socket, 8 mm coil bolts, 10 mm engine cover hardware. Differences are in the plugs themselves โ€” the 1.5T (L15BE), 2.0T (K20C4) and Hybrid (LFA/LFB) all use different OE iridium part numbers and heat ranges, so look yours up by VIN rather than assuming one set fits all. The 2.0T also has a slightly busier cover bracket and loom routing on top, adding a couple of minutes.

Torque specs

Spark plugs (all 10th-gen Accord engines)About 13 ft-lb (18 Nm) โ€” verify in the service manual for your engine code
Ignition coil retaining boltAbout 7 ft-lb (9-10 Nm) โ€” verify in the service manual
Engine cover fastenersSnug by hand, roughly 6-7 ft-lb (8-9 Nm)

How the job goes

  1. Work on a cold engine. A hot aluminum head plus a cold plug is how threads get damaged.
  2. Open the hood, disconnect the negative battery terminal if you want to clear adaptations and avoid coil sparks (on the Hybrid, follow the 12 V battery procedure only โ€” never open the high-voltage system).
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover: pull the 10 mm nuts/bolts or lift the push-in grommets, then lift the cover off. On the 2.0T note the cover bracket studs; on the Hybrid unclip any wiring loom routed over the cover.
  4. Unclip the four coil connectors by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector, not the wire.
  5. Remove the single 8 mm (some coils 10 mm) bolt from each coil, then twist and pull each coil straight up out of the plug tube.
  6. Blow out or vacuum each plug well before loosening anything. Dirt dropped into an open cylinder is the one real risk in this job.
  7. Fit the 14 mm thin-wall plug socket on an extension and break each plug loose, then remove all four. Keep them in firing order to read wear and spot a problem cylinder.
  8. Compare the new plugs to the old โ€” same length, same thread reach, gap untouched. Do not drop a plug; a dropped iridium plug goes in the bin.
  9. Thread each new plug in by hand using the socket and extension with no ratchet until it seats, then torque to spec (about 13 ft-lb / 18 Nm).
  10. Wipe a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, drop the coils back in, and torque the coil bolts lightly (about 7 ft-lb).
  11. Reconnect all four coil connectors until they click, refit the engine cover, reconnect the battery.
  12. Start the engine and let it idle a minute. On the 1.5T a brief rough idle or a relearn stumble is normal; if a misfire code sets, recheck the connector and coil seating on that cylinder.
  13. Reset the Maintenance Minder item if your service item list includes the plug replacement.

Watch out

The 14 mm thin-wall plug socket, 8 mm (occasionally 10 mm) coil bolt and 10 mm cover fasteners are correct for the 10th-gen 4-cylinder layout, but confirm your exact plug part number and torque figure against the Honda service info for your engine code (L15BE, K20C4, or LFA/LFB hybrid) before buying.

Frequently asked

What size spark plug socket does a 2018-2022 Honda Accord need?

A 14 mm (9/16 in) thin-wall spark plug socket on 3/8 in drive, with a magnetic or rubber plug retainer, plus a 6 in extension. A standard-wall 14 mm socket may not clear the plug tubes.

How often should the spark plugs be changed on a 10th-gen Accord?

Honda's iridium plugs are rated around 100,000 miles, and the Maintenance Minder will call for them. If your 1.5T has a history of short trips, oil dilution or cold-climate fuel wash, pulling them at 60,000 miles to inspect is worth doing.

Do I have to remove the intake manifold or turbo plumbing?

No. On all three engines the coils and plugs are accessible once the plastic engine cover is off. Only wiring clips and the cover brackets need to come loose.

What is the spark plug torque for the Accord 1.5T and 2.0T?

Roughly 13 ft-lb (18 Nm) for these M12 fine-wire plugs โ€” verify in the service manual for your engine code. The head is aluminum, so use a torque wrench rather than guessing by feel.
