Tools you need for spark plugs on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Moderate ยท 1 to 1.5 hours ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Thin-wall magnetic spark plug socket, 14 mm, 3/8 in drive
  2. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 3/8 in ratchet with 6 in and 3 in extensions
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive, 5-50 ft-lb
  5. Small flat pry tool / trim removal set

Every XA50 RAV4 โ€” LE through TRD Off-Road, gas or hybrid โ€” runs the same 2.5L A25A-FKS with coil-on-plug ignition, so the procedure is identical across the generation. It's a top-of-engine job: plastic cover off, intake duct moved aside, four 10 mm coil bolts, four long iridium plugs. The only real difference on hybrids is a more crowded bay and the need to make absolutely sure the hybrid system is off so the engine can't auto-start while your hands are in there.

The thing people get wrong is the socket. These are 14 mm hex plugs sitting in deep, narrow tubes โ€” a generic 5/8 in plug socket won't go down, and a thick-wall 14 mm can bind and snap the insulator on removal. Buy a thin-wall magnetic plug socket before you start. The second mistake is torque: 13 ft-lb into an aluminum head feels far too loose, but guessing by feel is how threads get pulled.

3/8 in drive wobble extension or short U-joint
Helps clear the cowl and strut brace area on cylinder 4, especially on hybrids.
Recommendedshop
Torque wrench
3/8 in drive, 5-50 ft-lb range
Iridium plugs thread into an aluminum head โ€” overtightening strips it.
Requiredshop
Compressed air or vacuum
Air nozzle or shop vac with hose
Blows dirt out of the plug wells so nothing falls into the cylinder.
Recommendedshop
Flashlight or inspection light
LED work light
Lets you see into the plug tubes and check coil boot condition.
Recommendedshop
Spark plug gap gauge
Coin-type or wire gauge
To verify factory gap only โ€” do not bend iridium fine-wire tips.
Recommendedshop
Spark plugs
Denso iridium long-life, OE type FC16HR-Q8 (Toyota 90919-01298) โ€” confirm by VIN
The correct heat range and reach for the A25A-FKS; four required.
Partsshop
Dielectric grease
Silicone dielectric compound, small tube
Thin film inside the coil boots so they release next time; do not put it on the plug threads.
Consumablesshop
Anti-seize (optional, sparing)
Nickel anti-seize
Only if you choose to use it โ€” a trace on the threads, never on the electrode, and reduce torque slightly.
Consumablesshop
Shop towels and brake cleaner
Aerosol cleaner, lint-free towels
Cleans oil and grit off the valve cover before opening the plug wells.
Consumablesshop
Safety glasses

Debris falls out of plug wells when blowing them clean.
Safetyshop
Nitrile gloves

Keeps oil off your hands and off the new plug insulators.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

There is only one engine in this generation, the 2.5L A25A-FKS, in gas and hybrid form, so socket sizes are the same across all trims: 14 mm thin-wall plug socket and 10 mm coil bolts. Hybrid and Prime models simply have tighter access and require confirming the hybrid system is powered down before starting.

Torque specs

Spark plug (M12 x 1.25, 14 mm hex, aluminum head)18 Nm (13 ft-lb) โ€” verify in the service manual
Ignition coil hold-down bolt (10 mm head)verify in the service manual (typically about 10 Nm / 7 ft-lb for Toyota coils)
12V battery negative terminal nutverify in the service manual (light, about 5 Nm)
Intake air duct clampverify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, engine fully cold. On hybrids press the power button off, wait for READY to extinguish, and remove the key from the area so the engine cannot auto-start.
  2. Open the hood. Optional but recommended: loosen the 10 mm nut and disconnect the 12V negative battery cable (hybrid 12V battery is in the engine bay, right side under a cover). No battery registration is needed on this vehicle.
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover: pull it straight up off its rubber grommets, or remove the two 10 mm nuts/bolts first if fitted.
  4. Loosen the clamp on the intake air connector at the throttle body, release the clips on the resonator/air duct, and lift the duct aside so you have clear access across the top of the valve cover. Unclip any wiring harness retainers that lie across the coils.
  5. Wipe the valve cover clean, then blow or vacuum dirt out of the four coil/plug wells.
  6. Unplug each ignition coil connector (press the lock tab, do not pull on the wires), remove the single 10 mm bolt per coil, and twist-pull each coil straight up. Lay them out in cylinder order and inspect the boots for cracks or carbon tracking.
  7. Blow out each plug tube again, then fit the 14 mm thin-wall plug socket on a 6 in extension and break each plug loose. Turn slowly and steadily โ€” these have been in a long time.
  8. Remove all four old plugs and compare them. Even wear is normal; oily, ash-covered or badly eroded plugs mean look further into oil consumption or a lean/rich fault.
  9. Check the new plugs for shipping damage and confirm the gap matches the box spec. Do not re-gap iridium fine-wire plugs.
  10. Start each new plug by hand using the socket with the extension and no ratchet, so it threads in without cross-threading the aluminum head. Never force it.
  11. Torque each plug to 18 Nm (13 ft-lb) โ€” verify in the service manual. If you used anti-seize, go slightly lighter.
  12. Put a thin smear of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, seat the coils, install the 10 mm bolts snug (verify torque), and reconnect the connectors until they click.
  13. Refit the air duct and clamp, reinstall harness clips, reinstall the engine cover, and reconnect the battery.
  14. Start the engine and let it idle. Expect a rough second or two if the battery was disconnected while the ECU relearns idle. Check for misfire, then test drive and confirm no check engine light.

Watch out

Coil bolts are 10 mm and the plug hex on the A25A-FKS is 14 mm (thin-wall socket needed), which I am confident about; confirm the exact plug part number by VIN at the parts counter and confirm plug and coil torque in the Toyota service information before final tightening.

Frequently asked

How often do the spark plugs need changing on a 2019-2024 RAV4?

Toyota specifies the factory iridium plugs at roughly 120,000 miles (about 192,000 km) under normal service. If the car does a lot of short trips, towing or idling, inspecting around 90,000 miles is reasonable.

Which spark plugs does the 2.5L A25A-FKS use?

A Denso long-life iridium plug, OE type FC16HR-Q8 (Toyota part number in the 90919-012xx family). Always confirm by VIN, and don't substitute a cheaper copper or platinum plug โ€” the heat range and reach matter on this engine.

Do I have to remove the intake manifold to reach the plugs?

No. On the RAV4's A25A-FKS the coils and plugs are accessible from the top after removing the engine cover and swinging the plastic intake air duct out of the way.

What size socket do I need for RAV4 spark plugs?

A 14 mm thin-wall spark plug socket on a 3/8 in drive with a 6 in extension. The ignition coil hold-down bolts are 10 mm.
