Tools you need for spark plugs on a 2022-2024 Honda Civic

Easy ยท 45-75 minutes ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 14 mm thin-wall spark plug socket, 3/8 in
  2. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 6 in and 3 in extensions, 3/8 in
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive (10-60 Nm)
  5. Ratchet, 3/8 in drive

On the 11th-gen Civic this is one of the friendliest jobs on the car. Pull the plastic engine cover, unplug four coils, undo one 10 mm bolt per coil, and the plugs are straight down the middle of the head โ€” no intake manifold removal, no fighting under a cowl. The 2.0L NA is wide open; the 1.5 turbo just asks you to move the charge pipe and a harness bracket to get a clean shot at the rear coil bolt.

The two things people get wrong are torque and thread starting. These are fine-thread plugs in an aluminum head at only 18 Nm, so a ratchet-and-feel install often ends up 50% over spec. Always start each plug by hand with a bare socket and extension, then finish with a torque wrench. And do the job cold โ€” pulling plugs from a warm head is the fastest route to a stripped thread and a thread-repair kit.

Backup in case your replacement plugs use the older 16 mm hex; check the plug hex before you start.
Recommendedshop
Universal swivel / wobble extension
3/8 in drive
Helps angle onto the rear coil bolts on the 1.5 turbo where the charge pipe is in the way.
Recommendedshop
Torque wrench
3/8 in drive, 10-60 Nm (7-45 ft-lb) range
Plugs and coil bolts are small fasteners in aluminum and must be torqued, not guessed.
Requiredshop
Trim/panel tool set
Plastic pry tools
Pops the engine cover grommets and any wiring-harness clips without breaking them.
Recommendedshop
Needle-nose pliers

Releases the coil connector locking tabs and repositions harness clips.
Recommendedshop
Compressed air or vacuum
Air nozzle or shop vac with thin hose
Blows grit out of the plug wells before you pull the plugs so nothing drops into the cylinder.
Recommendedshop
Spark plug gap gauge
Wire-loop or feeler type
Verify gap on new plugs; do not adjust fine-wire iridium tips, just reject a damaged plug.
Recommendedshop
Flexible mirror and flashlight

Inspect the rear plug wells and confirm coil boots are seated fully.
Recommendedshop
Spark plugs
2.0L NA: 4x NGK/Denso iridium per owner's manual; 1.5T: 4x Denso DXE22HCR-D11 / NGK equivalent
The wear item; buy pre-gapped OE-spec plugs, do not substitute a colder or hotter heat range.
Partsshop
Dielectric grease
Silicone dielectric tune-up grease
Thin smear inside the coil boot to prevent sticking and arcing; keep it off the plug threads.
Consumablesshop
Anti-seize (optional, sparing)
Nickel anti-seize
Only a trace on the upper threads if at all โ€” Honda plugs have a plated thread and do not require it.
Consumablesshop
Nitrile gloves

Keeps oil and grit off your hands and out of the plug wells.
Safetyshop
Safety glasses

Debris blows back when clearing the plug wells with air.

Differences within the 2022-2024 generation

Socket sizes are the same on both engines: 10 mm for cover and coil bolts and a thin-wall 14 mm spark plug socket. The difference is access โ€” on the 1.5 turbo (L15B7/L15CA, including Si) you must swing the charge pipe and harness bracket aside to reach cylinders 3 and 4, while the 2.0L K20C2 needs only the cover removed. Plug part numbers differ between the NA and turbo engines, so order by engine, not just by year.

Torque specs

Spark plugs (both engines, M12 fine thread, aluminum head)13 ft-lb (18 Nm)
Ignition coil mounting bolt (M6)7 ft-lb (9.8 Nm)
Engine cover / intake bracket bolts (M6)7 ft-lb (9.8 Nm)
1.5T charge pipe clamp boltsverify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Work on a cold engine. Hot aluminum heads and hot plugs are how threads get pulled.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you want to avoid any chance of a stored misfire code while coils are unplugged (optional; no battery registration is required on this car).
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover: pull the push-pin grommets or remove the 10 mm bolts depending on trim, then lift the cover off.
  4. 1.5 turbo only: loosen and swing the intake/charge pipe and any harness bracket out of the way over cylinders 3-4 so you can reach the rear coil bolt straight on.
  5. Unplug the four ignition coil connectors by pressing the lock tab and pulling on the connector body, not the wire.
  6. Remove the single 10 mm bolt from each coil and pull each coil straight up with a slight twist. Lay them out in cylinder order so you can spot a bad cylinder later.
  7. Blow or vacuum dirt out of each plug well before loosening anything.
  8. Break each plug loose with the 14 mm thin-wall socket on a 6 in extension. If one is very tight, back it out a quarter turn, snug it slightly, then continue โ€” do not force it in one pull.
  9. Lift the plugs out and compare them: heavy white deposits, oil, or a melted tip means an underlying problem worth chasing before reassembly.
  10. Check the new plugs for shipping damage and confirm the gap matches spec; never pry on an iridium fine-wire tip.
  11. Start each new plug by hand using the socket on the extension with no ratchet attached, so you feel any cross-threading. It should spin in freely several turns.
  12. Torque each plug to 13 ft-lb (18 Nm). If a plug will not seat smoothly, stop and inspect the threads.
  13. Wipe a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, refit the coils, and torque the 10 mm bolts to 7 ft-lb (9.8 Nm).
  14. Reconnect all four coil connectors until they click, refit the charge pipe/brackets on the 1.5T, and reinstall the engine cover.
  15. Reconnect the battery, start the engine, let it idle, and confirm smooth running with no misfire light. Clear any stored codes if needed.

Watch out

Coil bolts are 10 mm and both engines take a thin-wall 14 mm spark plug socket with 18 Nm plug torque, which I am confident about; still verify your specific plug's hex size in the box and confirm torque values against the Honda service information for your model year.

Frequently asked

What size socket do I need for the spark plugs on a 2022-2024 Civic?

A thin-wall 14 mm spark plug socket on 3/8 in drive with a 6 in extension. Carry a 5/8 in (16 mm) plug socket as a backup in case your aftermarket plugs use the older larger hex, and a 10 mm socket for the coil and cover bolts.

How tight should the spark plugs be?

13 ft-lb (18 Nm). That is much lighter than most people expect โ€” use a 3/8 in torque wrench with a low range, and never an impact gun, because the head is aluminum.

How often do 11th-gen Civic spark plugs need replacing?

Honda's iridium plugs are generally rated around 100,000 miles, and the Maintenance Minder will call for them. Many 1.5 turbo owners, especially tuned Si cars, change them closer to 50,000-60,000 miles because carbon and boost shorten plug life.

Do I need to reset or register anything after the job?

No. There is no battery registration or relearn required โ€” just reconnect everything, start the car, and clear any misfire code that was set while the coils were unplugged. If the check engine light stays on, scan for codes before driving.
