On every 5th-gen CR-V the ignition coils sit right on top of the valve cover under a plastic engine cover, so this is a genuinely easy job — four 10 mm bolts, four connectors, four plugs. The only real obstacle is on the 1.5 turbo, where the turbo inlet pipe and wiring harness crowd the front of the engine and you may need a wobble extension or a stubby ratchet to get a straight pull on the outermost coil.

The mistake people make is torque. These are 12 mm-thread iridium plugs in an aluminum head and the spec is only about 13 ft-lb, which feels loose compared to older engines. Run them down by hand first, use a torque wrench, and blow the wells out before you crack a plug loose so nothing falls into the cylinder.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Coil bolts are 10 mm and plugs are 12 mm-thread iridium at roughly 18 Nm across the 1.5T (L15BE), 2.4 K24W and 2.0 Hybrid (LFA). Plug part numbers differ by engine, so order by VIN; the 1.5T is the only one where you will likely have to move the turbo intake tube for access, and on the Hybrid you must wait for the READY light to go out before starting.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, let the engine cool completely — never pull plugs from a hot aluminum head.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal (10 mm nut). On the Hybrid, switch off, wait for the READY light to go out, and leave it 5 minutes before touching anything under the hood.
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover: pull the push-in grommets or undo the 10 mm nuts/bolts depending on year, then lift it straight off.
  4. On the 1.5 turbo, unclip the harness and, if it blocks access, loosen and swing aside the turbo inlet/intake tube to reach the front coils.
  5. Unplug each ignition coil connector by pressing the lock tab; label coil positions 1-4 if you want to reinstall them in order.
  6. Remove the 10 mm bolt from each coil, then twist and pull the coil straight up out of the well.
  7. Blow or vacuum debris out of each plug well before loosening anything.
  8. Break each plug loose with the 14 mm thin-wall plug socket on a 6 in extension, then unscrew and lift it out carefully.
  9. Compare the old plug to the new one: same thread length, same hex, same gap. Note any oil, fuel wash, or damaged tips as diagnostic info.
  10. Start each new plug by hand — thread it in with the socket and extension only, no ratchet — until it seats, then torque to 13 ft-lb (18 Nm).
  11. Smear a thin film of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, refit the coils, torque the 10 mm bolts to about 7 ft-lb, and click the connectors home.
  12. Reinstall the intake tube (if removed), engine cover, and battery cable. Start the engine and let it idle to confirm smooth running with no misfire light.

Watch out

Coil bolts are 10 mm on all 5th-gen CR-V engines and the plugs are 12 mm-thread iridium torqued to about 18 Nm; the plug hex is 14 mm on the common 1.5T and K24W applications, but check your specific plug's hex (14 mm vs 5/8 in) and part number against your VIN before you buy the socket.

How often should the spark plugs be changed on a 5th-gen CR-V?

Honda's schedule is roughly 100,000 miles for the iridium plugs, or when the Maintenance Minder calls sub-item 4. Many 1.5T owners change them earlier, around 60,000-80,000 miles, especially in cold climates with a lot of short trips.

Do I have to remove the intake manifold or turbo to reach the plugs?

No. The plugs are directly under the coils on top of the engine. On the 1.5 turbo you may need to unclip the harness and loosen the turbo inlet tube for clearance, but nothing else comes off.
