Differences within the 2020-2024 generation

All engines in this generation use a 22 mm (7/8 in) oxygen sensor socket. The 2.3L EcoBoost has a single upstream sensor in the turbocharger outlet, reachable with a straight socket and extensions; the 3.0L EcoBoost has two, one per turbo, with bank 2 tight enough to require the offset crow-foot wrench. The 3.3L hybrid and Police 3.3L NA have two manifold-mounted sensors and need the offset wrench plus extra splash-shield removal, and the hybrid demands high-voltage precautions before going underneath.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the vehicle and confirm which sensor is at fault. Bank 1 is the side with cylinder 1; on the 3.0L EcoBoost and 3.3L V6 that is the passenger side. Note the DTC before clearing anything.
  2. With the engine cold, spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads. Ideally do this the evening before and again an hour before you start.
  3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal (8 mm or 10 mm) if you want the PCM adaptives reset. On hybrids, follow Ford's high-voltage shutdown procedure and keep clear of any orange cabling.
  4. Chock the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle and set it on jack stands at the factory lift points. Never rely on the jack alone.
  5. Remove the front underbody splash shield: mix of 8 mm hex-head screws, T30 Torx and plastic push-pin retainers. On the 3.0L you may also need to drop the passenger-side wheel liner for bank 2 access.
  6. On the 2.3L, pull the plastic engine cover straight up off its ball studs; the single upstream sensor sits in the turbocharger outlet/downpipe and is often easiest to reach from a combination of above and below.
  7. Trace the sensor harness back to its connector, release the locking tab, and unplug it. Free the harness from its clips so it is not twisted when the sensor turns.
  8. Fit the 22 mm slotted oxygen sensor socket over the sensor with the wire through the slot. Where there is no room, use the 22 mm offset wrench. Break the sensor loose counterclockwise with steady pressure โ€” no jerking.
  9. If it will not move, apply gentle heat to the exhaust boss (not the sensor body) and try again. Stop before you round off the hex; a snapped sensor means removing the downpipe or manifold.
  10. Unthread the sensor and clean the threads in the boss with a brass brush. Do not chase the threads with a tap unless they are damaged.
  11. Check the new sensor's threads for factory anti-seize. If dry, apply a thin film of nickel anti-seize to the threads only โ€” keep it off the tip and the slots in the shield.
  12. Thread the new sensor in by hand to be sure it is not cross-threaded, then torque to roughly 35 ft-lb (48 Nm), verifying the figure for your engine. Use the crow-foot adapter if you cannot get a socket square on it.
  13. Reconnect the sensor connector until it clicks and route the harness in the original clips, away from the turbo, downpipe and any moving parts.
  14. Reinstall the splash shield and engine cover, reconnect the battery, lower the vehicle and torque any wheels to 111 ft-lb (150 Nm).
  15. Start the engine, let it idle to temperature, and watch for exhaust leaks around the sensor boss. Clear the codes and take a mixed drive cycle so the readiness monitors run and confirm the fault is gone.
