On the T1 Silverado, the upstream oxygen sensors thread into the exhaust manifolds, low and behind the frame rail, so almost all the work is access rather than wrenching. Get the truck on stands, unplug the connector before you turn anything, and use a slotted 22 mm offset O2 socket - a regular socket will not clear the pigtail and an open-end wrench will round the hex on a sensor that has been cooking for six figures of miles.

The thing people get wrong is buying the wrong sensor. The gas engines use wideband air/fuel sensors upstream that look nothing like the narrowband units downstream, and a code for Bank 1 Sensor 1 does not mean both sides need replacing. The second most common mistake is re-routing the pigtail loosely and melting it on the exhaust a week later - put the wire back in every original clip.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

All three gas engines (2.7L L3B, 5.3L L84, 6.2L L87) use a 22 mm / 7/8 in hex, M18 x 1.5 sensor, so the socket is the same - but the 2.7L has one upstream sensor in the manifold ahead of the turbo with very little clearance, usually requiring a 7/8 in crowfoot and removal of charge-air ducting, while the V8s have two upstream sensors (one per bank) reachable from below after pulling 8-10 mm heat shield bolts. The 3.0L LM2 Duramax has no per-bank upstream O2 sensors: it uses a single exhaust oxygen sensor on the turbo outlet/after-treatment plumbing plus separate NOx sensors, so location, part number and shielding removal are all different even though the wrench size is similar.

How the job goes

  1. Read the codes first and note whether the fault is Bank 1 Sensor 1 (driver side on the V8s) or Bank 2 Sensor 1 (passenger side). Only replace what is actually failed - GM wideband upstream sensors are not cheap.
  2. Let the truck cool completely. Working on a hot manifold guarantees burns and makes the threads more likely to gall.
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable (10 mm nut) if you want to avoid any chance of shorting the sensor heater circuit. Note: the T1 does not require battery registration, but the radio and window presets may need resetting.
  4. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front of the truck at the factory jack points and set it on jack stands under the frame rails. On 2WD and 4WD alike, both upstream sensors are reached from underneath.
  5. Spray penetrating oil where the sensor body meets the manifold boss and let it soak 15-30 minutes. Re-spray once.
  6. Trace the sensor pigtail up to its connector. Press the lock tab (use a pick if it is stiff) and unplug it, then pop the harness out of its retaining clips so the sensor can rotate freely with the wire.
  7. 2.7L L3B only: remove the engine cover and any intake/charge air ducting or turbo heat shielding in the way, and expect to work partly from above. The sensor sits close to the turbo, so clearance for a socket is minimal - the 7/8 in crowfoot is usually the tool that fits.
  8. V8 (5.3L L84 / 6.2L L87): remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (8 or 10 mm) if the shield blocks the socket. The driver-side sensor is tight against the steering shaft; the passenger side is usually the easier of the two.
  9. 3.0L LM2 Duramax: the exhaust oxygen sensor is on the turbo outlet / after-treatment pipe, not a manifold. Drop the underbody shielding as needed and identify it separately from the NOx sensors, which look similar but have separate control modules.
  10. Fit the 22 mm offset O2 socket (or crowfoot) squarely on the sensor hex, add the swivel and extensions, and break it loose counterclockwise with steady force. If it will not move, apply brief heat to the manifold boss around it, then try again while warm.
  11. Once out, clean the manifold threads and sealing surface with a wire brush. If the threads are damaged, run an M18 x 1.5 O2 thread chaser through them.
  12. Check the new sensor's threads. If compound is already applied, do not add more. If bare, apply a thin film of nickel anti-seize to the threads only - never on the sensor tip or vent holes.
  13. Thread the sensor in by hand until it seats, then torque to 31 ft-lb (42 Nm) - verify this figure for your engine. Do not overtighten; the manifold bosses strip easily.
  14. Route the pigtail exactly as the original ran, back into every clip, well away from the exhaust and any moving steering or driveline part. A melted pigtail is the most common re-do on this job.
  15. Reconnect the connector until it clicks, reconnect the battery, lower the truck, and reinstall any shields, ducting or engine cover.
  16. Clear the DTC with the scan tool, then drive the truck until the system goes to closed loop and watch live data. The upstream reading should be a stable lambda near 1.00 at idle with clean response to throttle changes, and the readiness monitors should set within a drive cycle or two.

Watch out

The 22 mm (7/8 in) sensor hex and M18 x 1.5 thread are standard across the gas T1 engines and I am confident in those, plus the 8/10/13 mm shield and bracket hardware; confirm the exact torque value and your specific sensor part number against the GM service information for your engine and bank before installing.
