On the XA50 RAV4 the front sensor is a wide-band air/fuel ratio sensor threaded into the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine, Bank 1 Sensor 1. Access is awkward rather than hard: pull the engine cover, shift the intake hose, unclip the connector, and get a 22 mm slotted O2 socket or a 22 mm offset wrench on the body. Most people end up working half from the top and half from underneath with the front on stands.

The two things that go wrong are buying the wrong sensor and forcing a seized one. The upstream A/F sensor and the downstream O2 sensor look alike and both have four wires, but they are not the same part - order by VIN. And if the sensor does not budge after a good soak in penetrating oil, keep soaking and use an offset wrench for leverage instead of hammering it; snapping the body off inside the manifold turns a one-hour job into a manifold replacement.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

The 2.5L A25A-FKS in the gas RAV4 and the A25A-FXS in the hybrid/Prime both use a 22 mm hex, M18 x 1.5 upstream A/F sensor, so tool sizes are identical. What differs is the part number and pigtail length - the hybrid, AWD and Prime layouts route the harness differently, so order by VIN. Hybrids also have additional underbody shielding and orange high-voltage conduit to route around when working from below.

How the job goes

  1. Scan for codes and note which sensor is flagged. P2195/P2196, P0031/P0032 and P015A point at the upstream Bank 1 Sensor 1 A/F sensor; P0136/P0137/P0141 point at the downstream sensor, which is a different part in a different spot.
  2. Let the exhaust cool completely. Disconnect the 12 V battery negative terminal (10 mm) if you want the ECM to reset cleanly; on hybrids also switch the car fully off and leave it a few minutes before working near the exhaust.
  3. Pull the plastic engine cover (pull straight up off its grommets, or remove the 10 mm nuts on models that use them) and move the intake air hose/resonator aside as needed to see the rear of the engine.
  4. Locate the A/F sensor in the exhaust manifold/front pipe at the rear of the engine block, with its wire running up to a connector clipped on a bracket.
  5. Chock the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle and set it on jack stands. Removing the front wheel or the lower engine splash shield makes the sensor much easier to reach from below.
  6. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak 15-30 minutes. Re-spray once.
  7. Unclip the A/F sensor connector from its bracket with a trim tool, press the lock tab and separate the connector. Free the harness from any clips or ties so the sensor can rotate freely.
  8. Fit the 22 mm slotted O2 socket (or 22 mm offset wrench) squarely on the sensor and break it loose counterclockwise. Steady, firm pressure; if it will not move, re-soak rather than shock it.
  9. Unscrew the sensor and remove it, routing the pigtail out the way it came.
  10. Wire-brush the threads in the exhaust boss and wipe the sealing face clean. Do not drop debris into the port.
  11. Thread the new sensor in by hand for several turns. If it fights you, stop and chase the threads - cross-threading here is a repair shop bill.
  12. Torque the sensor to 32 ft-lb (44 Nm), verifying the figure in the service manual for your exact build.
  13. Reconnect the connector until it clicks, and reinstate every harness clip so the wire cannot touch the exhaust or pulleys.
  14. Reinstall the splash shield, wheel (76 ft-lb), intake plumbing and engine cover. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Reconnect the battery, start the engine and let it idle to full warm-up. Clear codes, then watch A/F sensor live data - it should be active and switching with throttle, not pegged.
  16. Drive 15-20 minutes with a mix of steady cruise and idle so the monitors run, then re-scan to confirm no codes return and the O2/A/F monitor reports Ready.

The 22 mm sensor hex, M18 x 1.5 thread and 10 mm fastener sizes are standard across the XA50 gas and hybrid 2.5L A25A applications; confirm the sensor part number by VIN and confirm the 44 Nm torque figure in the Toyota service manual for your model year before final tightening.
