On the fifth-gen CR-V the "upstream O2 sensor" is really a wideband air/fuel ratio sensor screwed into the hot side of the exhaust at the back of the engine. The job itself is one fastener โ€” a 22 mm sensor body โ€” so 90% of the time and frustration goes into access and into breaking a sensor loose that has been baking in steel threads for 100,000 miles. A slotted 22 mm sensor socket, long extensions, and patience with penetrating oil are what make this an afternoon job instead of a tow to the dealer.

Access differs by engine: on the 1.5 turbo the sensor lives on the turbine housing and is easiest from below once the splash shield is off, while the 2.4 and the hybrid's 2.0 Atkinson put it in the exhaust manifold behind the head. The thing people get wrong is the part: fit an OE Honda/Denso air/fuel ratio sensor, not a universal narrowband O2 sensor with a splice kit โ€” the wrong sensor, or a spliced connector, brings the light straight back with a heater or response-time code.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

All three 5th-gen powertrains use a 22 mm hex on the upstream AFR sensor, so the socket is the same. What changes is access: the 1.5T (L15BE) sensor is on the turbo/turbine housing low at the rear of the engine, best reached from underneath after pulling the lower splash shield, and it often needs an offset 22 mm crowfoot instead of a socket; the 2.4 K24W9 (2017-2019 LX) and the hybrid 2.0 LFA thread into the exhaust manifold higher up at the back of the head, reachable from above with a wobble extension. Part numbers are different for all three โ€” order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. Read and record the codes with a scan tool so you know it is the upstream sensor (P0131/P0134/P2238 family) and not a downstream sensor or an exhaust leak.
  2. Let the exhaust cool completely. Exhaust parts near the turbo stay hot enough to burn for a long time.
  3. Chock the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle and set it on jack stands at the pinch welds.
  4. Locate the sensor: 1.5T โ€” low on the turbine housing at the back of the engine, best reached from below; 2.4 and hybrid โ€” in the exhaust manifold at the rear of the head.
  5. Remove the plastic engine cover (10 mm bolts or pull-off clips) and, on the 1.5T/hybrid, remove the lower splash shield clips and 10 mm bolts for access from underneath.
  6. Trace the sensor pigtail to its connector, release the lock tab and unplug it, then free the wire from every harness clip and bracket so the sensor can rotate freely.
  7. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak 15-30 minutes.
  8. Fit the 22 mm slotted oxygen sensor socket with the pigtail through the slot (or the offset wrench on the 1.5T) and break the sensor loose counterclockwise with steady pressure.
  9. Spin the sensor out, then wire-brush the manifold threads clean and check for damage.
  10. If the new sensor threads are not pre-coated, apply a very thin film of high-temp anti-seize to the threads only โ€” keep it entirely off the sensing element.
  11. Thread the new sensor in by hand until snug, then torque to 33 ft-lb (44 Nm). Do not lean on it.
  12. Route the harness back through its original clips so it cannot touch the exhaust or a moving pulley, then plug in the connector until it clicks.
  13. Reinstall the heat shield, splash shield and engine cover, lower the vehicle.
  14. Clear the codes, then drive normally and watch live data: the AFR sensor current/lambda should track fueling changes and fuel trims should settle within a few drive cycles.

Watch out

The 22 mm sensor hex and 10 mm accessory fasteners are correct across the 5th-gen 1.5T, 2.4 and hybrid, and 33 ft-lb (44 Nm) is Honda's usual AFR sensor figure, but confirm the torque and your exact sensor part number by VIN before installing.
