On the 10th-gen Accord the upstream sensor is a wideband air/fuel ratio sensor that lives right at the exhaust manifold or turbine housing. Mechanically it is one threaded sensor and one connector, so the job is simple in theory - the difficulty is entirely about reach and heat. The hybrid's naturally aspirated 2.0 gives you the best access, the 2.0T is a reach from below, and the 1.5T packs the sensor into the tightest pocket of the three.

The mistake people make is buying a generic "oxygen sensor" because a P0420 popped up. P0420 is a catalyst efficiency code and usually is not the upstream sensor at all, and a universal splice-in unit will not correctly drive a wideband A/F circuit. Buy the OE-style sensor by VIN, work on a stone-cold engine, and use the slotted socket so the pigtail never takes load.

Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

All three engines use a 22 mm sensor and 10 mm cover/heat-shield fasteners, so the tool sizes do not change. What changes is access: the hybrid (LFA 2.0 Atkinson) sensor is reachable from above at the front of the manifold, the 2.0T (K20C4) needs the lower splash shield off and is worked from below, and the 1.5T (L15BE) sensor sits so close to the turbine housing that an offset 22 mm crowfoot wrench is often the only thing that fits. Sensor part numbers and connectors differ between all three, so order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the car and confirm the code refers to Bank 1 Sensor 1 (upstream). Codes like P0131/P0134/P0135 point upstream; P0420 usually means catalyst or the downstream sensor.
  2. Let the engine cool completely. A hot manifold will burn you and hot aluminum threads gall more easily.
  3. Disconnect the 12 V battery negative terminal (10 mm) if you want to avoid a live harness. On the hybrid, leave the high-voltage system alone — nothing in this job touches orange cable.
  4. Remove the plastic engine cover: on the 1.5T and 2.0T it pulls off rubber grommets or comes off with a few 10 mm nuts; on the hybrid lift it straight up off its pins.
  5. Locate the sensor. Hybrid (2.0 Atkinson): front of the exhaust manifold, reachable from above. 1.5T: in the turbine housing/manifold behind the heat shield, usually easiest from below. 2.0T: in the turbo manifold, access from below after the splash shield is out.
  6. If working from below, chock the rear wheels, raise the front on the factory jack points and set it on jack stands. Remove the lower splash shield (10 mm bolts and plastic clips).
  7. Trace the sensor pigtail to its connector, unclip the harness from its brackets, press the lock tab and separate the connector. Note the routing so you can duplicate it.
  8. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it sit 15-20 minutes on high-mileage cars.
  9. Fit the 22 mm slotted socket over the sensor with the pigtail through the slot, add the shortest extension that clears, and break it loose counterclockwise. If there is no room for a straight socket, use the offset 22 mm wrench.
  10. Unscrew and remove the old sensor. Brush the boss threads clean and wipe with brake cleaner. Do not let debris fall into the port.
  11. Compare the new sensor to the old one - thread length, connector shape, pigtail length. Apply anti-seize only if the threads are bare.
  12. Thread the new sensor in by hand, then torque to 33 ft-lb (44 Nm). Do not use the sensor to pull a misaligned boss straight.
  13. Route the pigtail exactly as before, keeping it off the manifold and turbo, and clip it back into every bracket. Reconnect the connector until the lock clicks.
  14. Refit heat shields and splash shield, reconnect the battery, then start the engine and let it idle 2-3 minutes.
  15. Clear the codes, then check live data: the A/F sensor current/lambda should swing around 1.00 at idle and the fuel trims should settle near zero. Drive 15-20 minutes of mixed driving to let readiness monitors set.

Watch out

The 22 mm slotted sensor socket, 10 mm shield/cover fasteners and the roughly 44 Nm sensor torque are consistent across the 10th-gen Accord engines, but confirm the exact torque and sensor location for your engine in the Honda service manual, and order the sensor by VIN since 1.5T, 2.0T and hybrid part numbers differ.
