On the 14th-gen F-150 the upstream sensors are wideband air/fuel ratio sensors, one per bank, and how hard the job is depends entirely on which engine you have. The 5.0L V8 is straightforward: the sensors screw into the cast manifolds and you can get a 22 mm slotted socket on them from under the truck in about an hour. The 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost put them in the turbine inlet ahead of each turbo, packed in with heat shields and coolant lines, and you'll often need an offset 7/8 in crowfoot wrench plus a wobble extension โ€” and sometimes the wheel and fender liner off โ€” to get a swing on them.

The two things people get wrong are the part and the routing. These are not old-style narrow-band O2 sensors, so a universal splice-in unit will give you fuel-trim problems and the same code back; buy the bank-specific Motorcraft or OE-equivalent sensor for your VIN. And when you install it, clip the pigtail back into every original retainer โ€” a wire left resting on the turbo housing melts on the first drive.

Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

All four engines (2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, 3.5L PowerBoost) use M18 x 1.5 sensors, so the 22 mm / 7/8 in sensor socket is the same across the board. The difference is access: the 5.0L manifold sensors take a straight socket and extension, while the EcoBoost and PowerBoost turbine-inlet sensors usually require the 7/8 in offset crowfoot wrench and a swivel, and the passenger-side sensor often goes easier with the front wheel and fender liner removed (7 mm screws). Pigtail lengths and connector positions differ left to right, so order the sensor by bank.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the truck and write down the exact DTC so you replace the right sensor. Bank 1 is the passenger side on these engines, Bank 2 the driver side; Sensor 1 is upstream.
  2. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, let the exhaust cool completely. On the PowerBoost, switch off and wait at least 5 minutes before working near any orange high-voltage cabling.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal (8 mm or 10 mm nut) if you'll be working near wiring or want to reset adaptive fuel trims. Note that Ford's BMS may relearn after reconnect; idle may be slightly rough for a few minutes.
  4. Raise the front of the truck and set it on jack stands under the frame rails. Remove the lower engine splash shield / skid plate as needed (8, 10 and 13 mm fasteners).
  5. Locate the sensor: 5.0L V8 sensors thread into the top-rear of each cast manifold and are visible from below along the frame rail. 2.7L/3.5L EcoBoost sensors sit in the turbine inlet ahead of the turbo, best reached from below and, on the passenger side, sometimes easier with the front wheel and fender liner out (7 mm screws, plastic clips).
  6. Trace the sensor pigtail to its connector, unclip the harness from its retainers, then press the locking tab and separate the connector. Do not pull on the wires.
  7. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor base and let it soak. If it has been in for years, warm the manifold boss briefly with a torch โ€” keep flame off the sensor wire and any plastic or hoses.
  8. Break the sensor loose with the 22 mm slotted O2 socket, or the offset crowfoot wrench where clearance is tight. Pull steadily; if it binds, back it in slightly, re-oil, and work it out rather than forcing it.
  9. Wire-brush and inspect the threads in the boss. If they're chewed, run an M18 x 1.5 chaser through before fitting the new sensor.
  10. Fit the new sensor by hand until it seats, then torque to spec. Add O2-safe nickel anti-seize only if the new sensor's threads arrived bare โ€” never let compound reach the sensor tip.
  11. Route the pigtail exactly as the original was routed, clip it back into every retainer, and plug the connector in until it clicks. A pigtail touching the manifold or turbo will melt within minutes.
  12. Refit shields, wheel and liner if removed. Lower the truck, reconnect the battery, start the engine and check for exhaust leaks around the boss.
  13. Clear the DTC and drive the truck through a mix of idle, steady cruise and light load so the readiness monitors set. Recheck for codes after 20-30 miles.

Watch out

The 22 mm (7/8 in) sensor socket, M18 x 1.5 thread and the 7/8/10/13 mm fastener sizes are standard across this generation and reliable; I have deliberately not quoted an exact sensor torque figure โ€” look it up for your engine and model year before final tightening.
