On the 2.5L A25A (including hybrid) there is one upstream sensor in the rear exhaust manifold, usually reached from underneath after dropping the front splash shield. On the 3.5L V6 there are two, and the firewall-side one often needs an offset 22 mm crow-foot rather than a straight socket.

The mistake that costs people money is buying a cheap aftermarket "O2 sensor" instead of the correct Denso A/F sensor. These engines are sensitive to sensor response time, and a generic unit commonly triggers P2195/P2196 or wandering fuel trims within a few hundred miles. The second mistake is fighting a cold, seized sensor with a cheap socket until the manifold threads pull out — soak it with penetrating oil first and use heat on the boss if it resists.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the car and write down the code. P0031/P0032/P0037 or P2195/P2196 point to the A/F sensor circuit; on the V6 confirm whether it is bank 1 (firewall side) or bank 2 (radiator side) before you buy anything.
  2. Let the exhaust cool completely. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and, if you can, let it soak several hours or overnight.
  3. Disconnect the 12 V battery negative terminal (10 mm) if you want to avoid a stored code; on the hybrid, leave the high-voltage system alone — you never need to touch the orange cables for this job.
  4. Pull the plastic engine cover: lift the front edge off its grommets or remove the 10 mm bolts, depending on trim.
  5. Locate the sensor. 2.5L A25A: single upstream sensor in the exhaust manifold at the rear of the engine, best accessed from below with the front of the car raised. 3.5L V6: bank 1 sensor is at the rear manifold against the firewall, bank 2 is at the front manifold and is easiest from below after dropping the splash shield.
  6. Chock the rear wheels, jack the front of the car at the factory jack points and set it on jack stands. Remove the front under-tray / splash shield (10 mm bolts and plastic pin clips) for access.
  7. Unplug the sensor connector — press the lock tab and pull on the connector body, not the wire. Release the harness from its clips and route the pigtail clear of the exhaust.
  8. Fit the 22 mm slotted O2 sensor socket over the sensor with the slot aligned to the wire. Break it loose counterclockwise using extensions and, if needed, a breaker bar. If it will not move, apply heat to the manifold boss around the sensor and try again.
  9. Unscrew and remove the sensor. Wire-brush any carbon out of the threaded boss and check the threads are clean and undamaged.
  10. Compare old and new sensors — same connector shape, same wire length, same thread. Apply nickel anti-seize sparingly only if the new sensor threads are bare; Denso units usually come pre-coated.
  11. Thread the new sensor in by hand until it seats, then torque to spec (about 30 ft-lb / 40 Nm, verify in the manual). Do not overtighten into the aluminum-head-side boss on the 2.5L.
  12. Route the harness exactly as the original ran, clip it in, and plug the connector in until it clicks. Keep the wire away from the manifold and any moving part.
  13. Reinstall the splash shield and engine cover, lower the car, reconnect the battery.
  14. Clear the code, then drive the car through a warm-up and steady 40-60 mph cruise. Watch live data: the A/F sensor current/voltage should react quickly and the fuel trims should settle near zero. Confirm the readiness monitor sets before an emissions test.
