On the 3rd-gen Tacoma the upstream sensor is a Denso wideband air/fuel ratio sensor screwed into the exhaust manifold. Electrically it's a two-minute job; mechanically it comes down to whether a 22 mm sensor that's been heat-cycled for 100,000 miles will break loose without taking the manifold threads with it. Soak it with penetrant the night before, use a proper slotted 22 mm O2 socket on a long extension, and be willing to put heat on the boss rather than more force on the wrench.

The 2.7L 2TR-FE has a single upstream sensor and is the easier of the two. The 3.5L 2GR-FKS has one per bank, and the one tucked against the firewall on the driver side is the job people underestimate — that's where a 22 mm offset crowfoot earns its money. The most common mistake is buying a "universal" or cheap aftermarket O2 sensor: these are calibration-specific wideband sensors, they're bank-specific on the V6, and a no-name unit usually brings the check engine light straight back.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Sensor hex is 22 mm and the thread is M18 x 1.5 on both engines, so the tooling is identical. The 2.7L 2TR-FE has one upstream sensor; the 3.5L 2GR-FKS has two (bank 1 and bank 2), and the two part numbers differ by pigtail length and routing, so they are not interchangeable. The V6's driver-side sensor usually needs a 22 mm crowfoot plus a wobble extension where the 2.7L can be done with a straight slotted socket.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the truck and write down the code. P0031/P0032/P0135/P2195/P2238 point to bank 1 sensor 1; P0037/P0051/P0155/P2197/P2240 point to bank 2 sensor 1 (V6 only). Confirm with live data before buying a part.
  2. Let the engine cool. Working on a hot manifold is how you get burned and how you strip a boss.
  3. With the engine cold, spray penetrating oil around the base of the sensor where it threads into the manifold. Ideally do this the night before and again before you start.
  4. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front of the truck and set it on jack stands under the frame rails.
  5. Remove what's in the way: the plastic engine cover (pull-off clips) and the lower engine splash shields (10 mm), plus the front skid plate (14 mm) if fitted. 2.7L: the sensor sits in the manifold high on the firewall side and is usually reached from below through the gap ahead of the crossmember.
  6. On the V6, identify the bank. Cylinders 1-3-5 are bank 1; on the longitudinal 2GR-FKS in the Tacoma bank 1 is normally the passenger side and bank 2 the driver side — confirm against the wiring diagram before you spend money, because the two sensors are not interchangeable.
  7. Trace the sensor pigtail to its connector on the harness bracket. Press the lock tab and unplug it, then unclip the pigtail from every bracket and retainer so the sensor can rotate freely.
  8. Fit the 22 mm slotted O2 socket over the sensor with the pigtail through the slot, add extensions and break the sensor loose counterclockwise. If there isn't room to swing the socket, use the 22 mm offset crowfoot instead.
  9. If it won't move, stop pulling. Heat the manifold boss around the sensor with a torch for 20-30 seconds (keep flame off the sensor body and any wiring), re-soak, and try again. Cracking a manifold boss turns this into a manifold replacement.
  10. Unthread the old sensor and remove it. Wire-brush the threads in the boss and clean the sealing face. If the threads are rough, run an M18 x 1.5 O2 thread chaser through them.
  11. Compare the new sensor to the old one: connector shape, pigtail length and bank marking must match. Do not touch or clean the sensor tip, and keep oil, silicone and brake cleaner off it.
  12. Thread the new sensor in by hand until it seats, then torque to about 30 ft-lb (40 Nm) — verify the figure in the service manual. Do not guess by feel; these pull out of aluminum-alloy bosses easily.
  13. Route the pigtail exactly as the original was, through every clip, away from the exhaust and any moving steering or driveline part, then plug the connector in until it clicks.
  14. Refit the splash shields, skid plate and engine cover. Lower the truck.
  15. Clear the codes with the scan tool, then run the engine to operating temperature. Watch live data: the A/F sensor should read near stoichiometric with a Toyota A/F current around 0 mA at steady cruise and swing rich/lean on snap throttle and decel.
  16. Drive a mixed cycle of 15-20 minutes and re-scan to confirm no pending codes and that the O2/catalyst monitors are running.
