The biggest mistake people make is buying a cheap universal or narrowband sensor. The upstream unit on all three drivetrains is a Denso wideband A/F sensor with a specific connector and heater resistance; a splice-in part will throw fuel trim and heater circuit codes even when it physically fits. The second most common mistake is yanking the old sensor out by its wire, or reinstalling with the harness resting against the exhaust so it melts a few thousand miles later.

Differences within the 2020-2024 generation

All three drivetrains (1.8 2ZR-FAE, 1.8 hybrid 2ZR-FXE, 2.0 M20A-FKS) use the same 22 mm oxygen sensor socket and 10 mm fasteners for the undercover and heat shields. The 2.0 M20A-FKS has the tightest clearance between the manifold and firewall, so a wobble extension or 22 mm offset O2 wrench is often needed there, while the 1.8 and hybrid usually take a straight socket and extension. Part numbers differ between all three - order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. Scan the car and confirm the fault is Bank 1 Sensor 1 (upstream A/F sensor), not the downstream sensor or a wiring/exhaust leak issue.
  2. Let the engine cool completely. Working on a hot manifold burns you and cold threads are less likely to gall.
  3. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front of the car at the factory jack points and set it on jack stands.
  4. Optionally disconnect the negative battery terminal (10 mm) to avoid shorting the connector.
  5. Remove the plastic engine undercover: 10 mm bolts plus push-pin clips. Pop the clips with a trim tool so you can reuse them.
  6. Locate the upstream A/F sensor threaded into the exhaust manifold/catalyst assembly at the back of the engine. On the 2.0 M20A you may need to remove a heat shield (10 mm bolts) for clearance.
  7. Trace the sensor lead up to its connector, usually clipped to a bracket on the rear of the cylinder head or the firewall side. Press the lock tab (pick helps) and unplug it, then free the harness from its clips.
  8. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor threads and let it soak 15-30 minutes.
  9. Fit the 22 mm slotted O2 socket over the sensor with the pigtail through the slot, add extensions, and break it loose counterclockwise. If there is no room for the socket, use the 22 mm offset O2 wrench.
  10. Unscrew the sensor and remove it along with its wiring. Note the exact harness routing before you pull it out.
  11. Wire-brush the threads in the manifold boss. Do not use a tap unless the threads are damaged - it can drop chips into the exhaust.
  12. Apply a thin film of O2-safe anti-seize to the new sensor's threads only if they are not already pre-coated. Keep it off the sensor tip.
  13. Thread the new sensor in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then torque to spec (approx. 30 ft-lb / 44 Nm - verify).
  14. Route the new harness exactly as the old one ran, clip it in place away from the exhaust and any moving parts, and click the connector home until the lock tab snaps.
  15. Reinstall the heat shield and engine undercover, lower the car, reconnect the battery.
  16. Clear the codes, then drive the car through a warm-up and steady cruise so the readiness monitors run. Verify with live data that the A/F sensor is switching and fuel trims are near zero.
