On the K2XX Silverado this is a top-side job. Unlike older trucks there is no hydraulic power steering pump crowding the front of the engine, so once the intake duct is off and the belt is relieved you are looking at two 15 mm bolts, one 13 mm battery cable nut and a plug. Most people finish in about an hour, and the hardest part is usually getting a good angle on the lower mounting bolt with the belt still in the way.

The thing people get wrong is condemning a good alternator. These trucks use GM's Regulated Voltage Control, which deliberately drops charging voltage into the 12.6-13.2 V range once the battery is topped off, so a wandering dash gauge is normal. Test the battery and check for charging system codes first. The second mistake is forgetting to disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the B+ stud, which is live all the time.

Differences within the 2014-2018 generation

Tool sizes are the same across the 4.3 LV3, 5.3 L83 and 6.2 L86 — 15 mm mounting bolts and a 13 mm B+ nut on all of them. What differs is the belt: the V6 and V8 use different length serpentine belts and slightly different accessory drive layouts, so buy the belt by engine. Amperage also varies (roughly 150 A base, 170 A with tow, trailer brake, dual battery or upfitter packages), so match the part number stamped on the old unit rather than assuming.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, set the parking brake and let the engine cool. Plug in a memory saver if you want to keep radio presets.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 13 mm wrench and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  3. Pull the plastic engine cover straight up off its ball studs, then loosen the intake duct clamps (7 or 8 mm hex / Torx) and remove the duct between the air box and throttle body. Unclip the MAF/IAT connector if it interferes.
  4. Note or photograph the serpentine belt routing. There is a routing diagram on the radiator support of most trucks.
  5. Fit the serpentine belt tool or breaker bar to the tensioner, rotate it to release tension, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Let the tensioner return slowly and rest the belt aside.
  6. Pull back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the 13 mm nut and lift the battery cable eyelet off the stud. Keep the nut, it is easy to drop into the front cover area.
  7. Press the red lock tab and squeeze the release on the two-wire regulator connector, then unplug it. Free any harness clips attached to the alternator or bracket.
  8. Remove the two 15 mm M10 mounting bolts. Support the alternator as the second bolt comes out; use an extension and a wobble if the lower bolt is shielded by a bracket.
  9. Lift the alternator up and out through the top. On some trucks it is easier to rotate it and feed the harness side out first.
  10. Compare the new unit to the old one: same pulley diameter, same case clocking, same connector, same amperage rating.
  11. Set the new alternator in place, start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminum, then torque to 37 ft-lb (50 Nm).
  12. Clean the B+ cable eyelet, install it on the stud, torque the nut to spec, add a light film of dielectric grease and reseat the rubber boot. Reconnect the regulator connector until it clicks.
  13. Reinstall the belt following your photo, holding the tensioner back and putting the smooth idler or alternator pulley on last. Verify the belt is centered in every groove.
  14. Reinstall the intake duct and clamps, engine cover and any harness clips.
  15. Reconnect the negative battery cable and torque to 11 ft-lb (15 Nm). Start the engine and check charging voltage: 13.5-15.0 V at idle is normal, though the truck's Regulated Voltage Control will drop to about 12.6-13.0 V once the battery is full.
  16. Let it idle a few minutes and listen for belt squeal or bearing noise, then recheck belt tracking.

Watch out

The 15 mm mounting bolts, 13 mm B+ nut and 37 ft-lb bolt torque are standard across the 4.3, 5.3 and 6.2 EcoTec3 trucks, but tensioner tool size and exact alternator location vary slightly by engine and options, so confirm against your truck and the GM service manual before final torquing.
