On the DT-generation Ram 1500, the first question is not which socket, it's whether you even have an alternator. Every 3.6 Pentastar and most 5.7 Hemi trucks in this generation use eTorque, where a 48-volt belt-starter-generator takes the alternator's place, spins on its own belt, and feeds a 48V lithium pack under the rear seat. Non-eTorque 5.7 trucks and the 3.0 EcoDiesel use a normal 12V alternator, and those jobs are far closer to a traditional swap.

Mechanically it is a belt, a B+ nut, a connector and two or three bolts. What eats the time is access — the coolant hoses, charge-air tube and harness brackets crowding the passenger side, and the rear mounting bolt you can only reach with a long extension and a wobble. The mistake people make most often is torquing the B+ stud nut by feel and spinning the stud, or buying a 12V alternator for an eTorque truck because the listing didn't specify.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

eTorque 3.6 and 5.7 use a 48V BSG with orange cables and a second dedicated belt and tensioner, so you need rear-seat access for the 48V pack disconnect plus the bolts for the 48V cable lug; non-eTorque 5.7 and 3.0 EcoDiesel use a conventional 12V alternator with a single serpentine belt. Hemi mounting bolts are typically 15 mm, Pentastar tends to run 13 mm and 15 mm, and the EcoDiesel adds 18 mm bracket hardware plus charge-air tube removal. The B+ stud nut is usually 13 mm on all conventional-alternator versions.

How the job goes

  1. Identify the setup: open the hood and look for orange 48V cables running to the unit on the passenger side of the engine. Orange cables = eTorque BSG. Plain black B+ cable = conventional alternator.
  2. Record radio presets, fit a memory saver if you want to keep settings, then turn the ignition off and remove the key fob from the cabin.
  3. Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable (10 mm) — on DT the main 12V battery is under the hood on the driver side; some trucks also have a second battery.
  4. eTorque only: lift the rear seat bottom cushion, remove the trim cover over the 48V battery pack, and disconnect/lock out the 48V pack per the owner's manual service instructions. Wait at least 5 minutes, then confirm 0V at the BSG cable before touching orange wiring.
  5. Raise the front of the truck on stands and remove the passenger-side inner fender splash shield (Torx/push pins) for belt and lower bolt access.
  6. Route the belt diagram or photograph the belt path. Release the automatic tensioner with a serpentine tool or 1/2 in breaker bar and slip the accessory belt off. On eTorque, the BSG has its own belt and tensioner — release that one too.
  7. Clear the work area: move coolant hoses, the charge-air/intake tube (EcoDiesel and Hemi), any harness brackets, and the degas bottle hose as needed. Do not stretch the AC lines.
  8. Remove the plastic cap from the B+ stud, back off the nut (usually 13 mm), and lift the cable off. Unplug the field/LIN connector by pressing the lock tab. On eTorque, unbolt the orange 48V cable lug and its shield ground.
  9. Remove the mounting bolts (commonly 15 mm on Hemi, 13/15 mm on Pentastar, 13/15/18 mm on EcoDiesel bracket hardware). Support the unit as the last bolt comes out — the eTorque MGU is heavy.
  10. Work the unit out of the engine bay; on some DT builds the easiest exit is downward past the front cross-member.
  11. Compare old and new units for pulley type, connector, and mounting ear spacing. eTorque MGU pulleys are decoupler-type — do not swap pulleys unless the part instructions say to.
  12. Fit the new unit, start all mounting bolts by hand, then torque to spec. Reconnect the field connector, then the B+ cable, torquing the nut carefully — overtightening spins the stud and ruins the unit.
  13. Reinstall the belt(s) using the photo, making sure every rib sits in its groove, and release the tensioner smoothly. Rotate the crank by hand two turns to check alignment.
  14. Reinstall shields and hoses, reconnect the 48V pack (eTorque) and then the 12V negative.
  15. Start the engine and check charging voltage (roughly 13.5-14.8V at the 12V battery). On eTorque, verify auto start-stop and that no hybrid warning light is on; clear any stored DTCs with a scan tool.

Watch out

Fastener sizes (10 mm battery, 13 mm B+, 13/15/18 mm mounting and bracket bolts) are typical for DT engines but vary by build date and by eTorque versus non-eTorque, so confirm on your truck before ordering tools, and take all torque values from the FCA service manual for your exact engine.

Does my Ram 1500 have an alternator or an eTorque BSG?

Open the hood and look for orange cables on the passenger side of the engine. Orange cable and a badge reading eTorque means a 48V belt-starter-generator; a plain black cable on a stud means a conventional 12V alternator. All DT 3.6 Pentastars are eTorque; the 5.7 came both ways depending on year and trim, and the 3.0 EcoDiesel is conventional.

Do I have to disconnect the 48V battery before replacing the eTorque unit?

Yes. The 48V pack lives under the rear seat bottom on the passenger side. Disconnect the 12V negative first, then perform the 48V pack disconnect per the owner's/service manual, wait at least five minutes, and verify zero volts at the BSG cable before unbolting it.

What socket do I need for the alternator bolts on the 5.7 Hemi?

Most DT Hemi alternator/BSG mounting bolts are 15 mm, with a 13 mm nut on the B+ stud and a 10 mm on the battery terminal. You will want a 6-inch and a 10-inch extension with a wobble to reach the rear bolt.

Does the truck need to be programmed after an alternator or BSG replacement?

A conventional alternator needs no programming — just clear any stored charging codes. An eTorque MGU usually works after reconnecting the 48V pack, but stored hybrid DTCs often need an FCA-capable scan tool to clear, and some replacements call for a hybrid system initialization, so have wiTECH access or a good bidirectional tool available.
