Tools you need for alternator on a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4

Must-have tools
  1. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 10 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. Long 3/8 in breaker bar or belt tensioner tool
  4. 12 mm wrench or socket (B+ nut)
  5. 21 mm socket, 1/2 in drive (lug nuts)

On the XA50 gas RAV4 the alternator is a straightforward two-bolt job hidden in an awkward spot. Everything comes down to 14 mm: the belt tensioner arm, and both M10 mounting bolts. The real time sink is access โ€” pulling the engine under-cover and the right front wheel with its inner fender liner so you can get a wobble extension on the lower bolt and guide the unit out. A proper serpentine belt tool pays for itself here; a plain breaker bar works but swings into the frame rail.

The thing people get wrong is assuming a hybrid RAV4 has an alternator. It does not โ€” MG1 and the DC-DC converter do the charging, so a dead 12 V battery or charging warning on a hybrid is a completely different diagnosis. The second mistake is torque on the B+ stud nut: it is a small soft stud and people lean on it with a 12 mm wrench, snapping it off a brand-new alternator. Snug and boot it, nothing more.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Only the 2.5L A25A-FKS gas RAV4 (and the 2019-2021 2.0L in markets outside North America, which uses the same 14 mm / 10 mm fastener pattern) has an alternator. Hybrid AXAH52/54 and the RAV4 Prime have no alternator and no accessory drive belt driving one, so this job does not apply; charging faults there are inverter, DC-DC converter or 12 V battery issues. Alternator output on gas models varies (roughly 130-150 A) by trim and towing package, so match the amperage and connector to the unit you remove.

Torque specs

Front wheel lug nuts76 ft-lb (103 Nm)
Alternator mounting bolts (M10)verify in the service manual
Alternator B+ terminal nutverify in the service manual (typically low, around 7 ft-lb / 9.8 Nm โ€” do not overtighten)
Battery negative terminal clamp nutverify in the service manual (snug only, roughly 4 ft-lb / 5.4 Nm)
Engine under-cover boltsverify in the service manual (hand-snug)

How the job goes

  1. Confirm you actually have an alternator: gas RAV4 (A25A-FKS) yes; hybrid AXAH52/54 no โ€” stop and diagnose the inverter/DC-DC system instead.
  2. Measure battery voltage engine off (about 12.5 V) and at idle (13.5-14.5 V). Scan for codes; P062F or a LIN/charging-control code can be ECM- or wiring-related, not the alternator.
  3. Chock the rear wheels, loosen the right front lug nuts, raise the right front corner and support it on a jack stand at the pinch weld.
  4. Disconnect the battery negative terminal with a 10 mm socket and tuck the cable aside. Note your radio presets and expect the power window one-touch and sunroof to need re-initializing.
  5. Remove the right front wheel. Take out the engine under-cover (10 mm bolts plus push-pin clips) and the lower part of the right inner fender liner with a trim tool and #2 Phillips.
  6. Photograph the serpentine belt routing, then release the automatic tensioner: fit a long breaker bar or belt tool to the tensioner arm bolt (14 mm) and rotate it to unload the spring, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  7. Peel back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the nut (12 mm) and lift off the heavy charging cable. Keep that nut and washer โ€” they are easy to drop into the subframe.
  8. Press the lock tab and unplug the small multi-pin connector on the alternator body.
  9. Remove the two alternator mounting bolts (14 mm, M10). The upper is usually reachable from the top, the lower from the wheel well with a wobble extension. Support the alternator as the second bolt comes out.
  10. Work the alternator out through the wheel well or up past the intake, whichever clears; it is heavy and the fit is tight, so do not lever against plastic coolant or intake parts.
  11. Compare old and new units side by side: pulley diameter and type, connector shape, case ears and amperage rating. Transfer the B+ boot if the new unit did not come with one.
  12. Fit the new alternator, start both mounting bolts by hand, then torque to spec. Reconnect the small connector until it clicks.
  13. Clean the B+ stud, fit the cable, torque the nut to spec (it threads into a soft stud โ€” overtightening snaps it), and reseat the rubber boot fully.
  14. Install the belt following your photo, saving the alternator pulley for last, then release the tensioner slowly and verify the belt is centered on every pulley rib.
  15. Reinstall the fender liner and under-cover, fit the wheel, lower the car and torque the lug nuts to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. Reconnect the battery negative terminal. Start the engine and check for 13.5-14.5 V at idle, no belt squeal or whine, and clear any stored codes. Re-initialize the power windows by holding each switch down then up at its limit for a second.
  17. Test drive, then recheck B+ nut tightness and belt tracking after 50-100 miles.

Watch out

The fastener sizes (10 mm battery, 12 mm B+ nut, 14 mm tensioner and mounting bolts, 21 mm lug nuts) are typical for the XA50 A25A-FKS and the 76 ft-lb lug torque is solid, but alternator bolt and B+ nut torques vary and access can differ slightly by build date and trim โ€” confirm both against the Toyota service information for your VIN.

Frequently asked

Does the RAV4 Hybrid have an alternator?

No. The hybrid and Prime use motor-generator MG1 through the inverter and a DC-DC converter to charge the 12 V battery, so there is no alternator to replace. A charging warning on a hybrid means the 12 V battery, DC-DC converter or inverter needs diagnosis.

What socket sizes do I need for a 2020 RAV4 alternator?

A 14 mm socket handles the belt tensioner and both M10 alternator mounting bolts, 12 mm for the B+ terminal nut, 10 mm for the battery terminal and under-cover bolts, and 21 mm for the lug nuts if you pull the wheel.

Do I have to remove the wheel to change the alternator?

Not strictly, but almost everyone does. Removing the right front wheel, the lower inner fender liner and the engine under-cover gives you the angle for the lower mounting bolt and room to pull the unit out.

Is it the alternator or the battery?

Check voltage with a multimeter: about 12.4-12.7 V engine off and 13.5-14.5 V at idle. Low or unchanged voltage at idle points to the alternator or its ECM-controlled charging circuit, while a good 14 V charge but a car that will not crank points to the battery.
