On the T1-platform Silverado 1500 the alternator is one of the friendlier jobs on the truck. It sits high on the passenger side of the engine, held by two bolts into an aluminum bracket, with one big B+ cable and one small two-wire connector. Release the serpentine belt with a breaker bar on the tensioner, pull two 15 mm bolts on the V8s, and the unit lifts out from above. Most of the time goes into removing intake ducting and working around coolant hoses, not the alternator itself.
The mistake people make is touching the B+ stud with the battery still connected โ one slip of the wrench against the bracket and you get a shower of sparks, a ruined cable and sometimes a damaged fuse block. Disconnect the negative terminal first, every time. Second most common mistake is ordering by year alone: these trucks came with several amperage ratings and an optional dual-alternator setup, so match the RPO code and compare the old unit's pulley and connector before you install anything.

The 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 use 15 mm (M10) alternator mount bolts and a 13 mm B+ stud nut, with the unit accessible from above once the intake duct is off. The 2.7L L3B turbo uses the same fastener sizes but you will often have to loosen the charge-air pipe or resonator for clearance, and the exhaust side runs hot. The 3.0L LM2 Duramax has the tightest access, a stiffer and longer accessory belt that needs a long belt tool, and its fastener and torque values should be checked in the service manual; diesel and tow-package trucks are also the most likely to carry the dual-alternator option.

The 15 mm mount bolts, 13 mm B+ nut and 10 mm battery clamp are correct for the Gen V 5.3L/6.2L trucks and normally the 2.7L as well; the 3.0L LM2 fastener sizes and all torque values should be confirmed against the GM service manual for your exact year and RPO before final tightening.
No. The alternator is controlled over a LIN line by the ECM and needs no programming or registration. You may want a scan tool only to clear stored charging system codes or the battery light after the repair.
The two mounting bolts are 15 mm (M10), run with a 3/8 in drive ratchet and a wobble extension for the rear bolt. The B+ output stud nut is 13 mm and the battery negative clamp is 10 mm on most builds.
