It sits high on the passenger side of the engine, held by two bolts into an aluminum bracket, with one big B+ cable and one small two-wire connector. Most of the time goes into removing intake ducting and working around coolant hoses, not the alternator itself.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

The 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 use 15 mm (M10) alternator mount bolts and a 13 mm B+ stud nut, with the unit accessible from above once the intake duct is off. The 2.7L L3B turbo uses the same fastener sizes but you will often have to loosen the charge-air pipe or resonator for clearance, and the exhaust side runs hot. The 3.0L LM2 Duramax has the tightest access, a stiffer and longer accessory belt that needs a long belt tool, and its fastener and torque values should be checked in the service manual; diesel and tow-package trucks are also the most likely to carry the dual-alternator option.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the fault first: with the engine running, measure battery voltage. Below about 13.2 V or above 15 V at idle points to the alternator or its LIN control; also check for a good ground and clean B+ connection before condemning the unit.
  2. Plug in a memory saver if you want to keep presets, then loosen the 10 mm (13 mm on some builds) negative battery clamp nut and pull the cable off the post. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
  3. Remove the engine cover and any air intake duct or resonator in the way. On the 2.7L L3B you may need to loosen the charge-air pipe; on the 3.0L LM2, remove the upper intake/air duct for access.
  4. Photograph the belt routing, or note the diagram on the underhood label. Put your breaker bar or belt tool on the tensioner, rotate it to release tension, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Let the tensioner return slowly.
  5. Unplug the alternator's small regulator/LIN connector by pressing the red or black locking tab with a pick, then pulling the connector straight off. Do not pry on the wires.
  6. Peel back the rubber boot on the B+ stud and remove the nut with a 13 mm socket or wrench. Lift the cable off the stud and tape or tie it away from metal โ€” it is live even with the battery disconnected if anything is still bridged, so keep it isolated.
  7. Remove the alternator mounting bolts (15 mm on the Gen V V8s). Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out. Use an extension and wobble to reach the rear/lower bolt.
  8. Lift the alternator out, going upward and toward the front on the V8s. On tight 2.7L and 3.0L installs you may have to rotate it to clear hoses and the coolant pipe.
  9. Compare old and new units side by side: pulley diameter and rib count, connector type, stud orientation, mounting boss spacing and amperage. Any mismatch means the wrong RPO application.
  10. Set the new alternator in place, start both mount bolts by hand, then torque them to spec (37 ft-lb on the V8s; verify for 2.7L and 3.0L). Aluminum bracket threads strip easily โ€” no impact gun.
  11. Fit the B+ cable on the stud with a light film of dielectric grease, tighten the nut to about 15 ft-lb, and seat the rubber boot. Click the small connector back on until the tab locks.
  12. Inspect the belt and idler/tensioner pulleys for wobble or noise. Route the belt per your photo, leaving the alternator pulley last, hold the tensioner off, slip the belt on, and release. Double-check every rib is seated in every pulley.
  13. Reinstall the ducting and engine cover, reconnect the negative battery cable and torque the clamp, then start the engine. Verify 13.5-14.8 V at idle, listen for belt squeal or bearing noise, and clear any stored charging codes with a scan tool if the battery light stayed on.
  14. Take a short drive with the headlights and blower on high and re-check voltage. GM trucks use regulated voltage control, so the reading will vary by battery state of charge โ€” a dip to around 13.0 V on a fully charged battery is normal, not a fault.

Watch out

The 15 mm mount bolts, 13 mm B+ nut and 10 mm battery clamp are correct for the Gen V 5.3L/6.2L trucks and normally the 2.7L as well; the 3.0L LM2 fastener sizes and all torque values should be confirmed against the GM service manual for your exact year and RPO before final tightening.
