The two things people get wrong are the B+ terminal and the belt. Over-torquing the small B+ stud nut cracks the housing on a brand new alternator, and a serpentine belt that isn't fully seated in every rib will shred within a few miles. Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

Fastener sizes are the same on both engines: 14 mm alternator mounting bolts, 12 mm B+ nut, 10 mm battery terminal. The difference is access — on the 2.7L 2TR-FE the alternator is reachable from above with only the intake duct out of the way, while on the 3.5L 2GR-FKS you usually have to move a coolant hose bracket and intake piping, and the belt is longer with a different tensioner position. Belt and alternator part numbers are engine-specific and do not interchange.

How the job goes

  1. Test first: with the engine off the battery should read 12.4-12.6 V; running it should read 13.8-14.6 V at the posts. No rise means charging fault, but also check the fusible link and the B+ cable before condemning the alternator.
  2. Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10 mm wrench. Tuck it aside so it can't spring back onto the post.
  3. Remove the plastic engine cover (10 mm bolts or pull-off clips, depending on trim) and set aside any intake ducting blocking the passenger side of the engine.
  4. For more room, chock the rear wheels, raise the front passenger side, support it on a stand, remove the wheel (21 mm lugs) and drop the lower splash shield or skid plate as needed.
  5. Note the serpentine belt routing or photograph it. Put the breaker bar or belt tool on the automatic tensioner, rotate it to release tension, slip the belt off the alternator pulley, and let the tensioner return slowly.
  6. Pull back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the nut (12 mm) and lift the heavy charging cable off the stud. Keep that cable away from any metal.
  7. Press the tab and unplug the alternator field/sense connector. Free any harness clips or brackets attached to the alternator body.
  8. Move anything in the way: on the V6 that usually means loosening a coolant hose bracket or the intake pipe; on the 2.7 it may mean pushing the power steering line and wiring loom aside. Do not stretch coolant hoses.
  9. Remove the two alternator mounting bolts (14 mm). Support the alternator as the second bolt comes out so it doesn't drop onto the belt or radiator hose.
  10. Lift the alternator out through the top. Compare it to the new unit: mounting ears, pulley type and groove count, connector shape and amperage rating must match.
  11. Set the new alternator in place, start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid crossing threads in the aluminum, then torque to spec.
  12. Clean the B+ ring terminal, reinstall it on the stud, tighten the nut to spec (snug, not heavy) and reseat the boot. Plug in the connector until it clicks.
  13. Reinstall the belt following your photo, seating it in every pulley groove except the last one, then release tension onto it. Double-check every rib sits in its groove.
  14. Reinstall brackets, ducting, undercover and wheel. Torque the lugs to 83 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  15. Reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine and confirm 13.8-14.6 V at idle and with the headlights and blower on. Listen for belt squeal or bearing noise. Reset the clock and radio presets.
