The thing people get wrong is diagnosis. Differences within the 2021-2024 generation

5.0L V8: alternator is high on the passenger side, usually only the engine cover and intake tube in the way; mount bolts 13 mm and 15 mm. 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost: lower and tighter, requires airbox and intake tube removal and often a wobble extension for the rear bolt; 3.5L heavy-duty, Police and some upfit trucks can be dual-alternator with a second unit, extra bracket bolts and a heavier cable. PowerBoost hybrid: no conventional alternator — charging comes from the transmission-mounted electric machine and a DC/DC converter, so none of these sizes apply.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the truck actually needs an alternator: load-test the battery, check for a slipping or glazed belt, and scan for charging DTCs. On this generation the PCM/BCM commands charging voltage, so a low-voltage reading is not automatically a bad alternator.
  2. If the truck is a PowerBoost hybrid, stop — there is no belt-driven alternator. Charging is done by the transmission-mounted electric machine and DC/DC converter, which is high-voltage service work.
  3. Park on level ground, chock the wheels, open the hood and let the engine cool. Hot exhaust and coolant lines run near the alternator on EcoBoost engines.
  4. Disconnect the negative battery cable with an 8 mm (some trucks 10 mm) socket and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back. Fit a memory saver first if you want to keep presets.
  5. Remove what is in the way. 5.0L: engine cover and the intake tube if needed. 2.7L/3.5L EcoBoost: airbox lid, intake tube (7 mm hose clamps), and the airbox itself, plus any coolant degas hose or harness clipped over the alternator.
  6. Photograph the belt routing, or note the diagram on the underhood label, before releasing tension.
  7. Fit the serpentine belt tool to the tensioner arm (13-18 mm hex or 3/8 in square, depending on engine), rotate against spring pressure, and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Release the tensioner slowly.
  8. Peel back the rubber boot on the B+ stud and remove the nut with an 8 mm or 10 mm socket. Lift the heavy charge cable clear and keep it away from any ground.
  9. Release the voltage-regulator connector: lift the red or black locking tab with needle-nose pliers or a pick, squeeze the latch, and pull straight off. These latches get brittle with heat — do not yank.
  10. Remove the alternator mounting bolts (typically 13 mm and 15 mm heads). Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out; on EcoBoost trucks it may have to be rotated and fed out past the coolant hose.
  11. Compare old and new units: pulley diameter and rib count, connector shape, stud size and mounting ear spacing must all match. Dual-alternator 3.5L trucks use different brackets and cables.
  12. Clean the mounting pads and the B+ cable ring terminal. Corrosion here causes high resistance and undercharging that looks like a bad alternator.
  13. Set the new alternator in place, start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading aluminum, then torque to spec.
  14. Reattach the B+ cable, torque the nut to its inch-pound spec, add a light film of dielectric grease and reseat the rubber boot. Plug in the regulator connector until it clicks and push the lock tab down.
  15. Route the new or original belt per your photo, leaving the alternator pulley last. Rotate the tensioner, seat the belt, and check that every rib is centered in every pulley groove.
  16. Reinstall the airbox, intake tube, covers and any harness clips. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the clamp.
  17. Start the engine. Check that the belt runs true and quiet, then measure battery voltage — roughly 13.5-14.8 V at idle with lights on is normal, though this generation may intentionally drop to about 12.8-13.2 V once the battery is charged.
  18. Clear any stored charging codes, relearn the power windows one-touch and, if the truck has an electronic parking brake or auto start-stop, drive it a few cycles to confirm no warning lights return.
