On the XV70 Camry the alternator lives low on the front of the engine, which means nearly all the access is from underneath after the plastic engine undercover comes off. The fastener list is short โ€” two 14 mm mounting bolts, a 10 mm B+ output nut and a small push-lock connector โ€” so the real work is lifting the car, releasing the automatic belt tensioner in a cramped space and wrestling the unit out past the subframe. The 2.5L A25A-FKS is the easier of the two; the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 has less room and often needs a duct or shield moved.

The one thing people get wrong is buying the wrong unit or skipping the diagnosis. Alternators differ between the 2.5L and 3.5L in amp rating, pulley and connector, so match the old part physically before installing. And a tired 12 V battery is by far the most common cause of a "bad alternator" complaint on these cars โ€” load test the battery before you spend the money. Hybrid owners: your car has no alternator, so the fix is a different job entirely.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are the same on both gas engines: 14 mm alternator mounting bolts, 10 mm B+ terminal nut and 10 mm battery clamp. The difference is access โ€” the 3.5L 2GR-FKS is tighter and often needs the lower intake duct or a plastic shield removed, and it uses a different, higher-output alternator that is not interchangeable with the 2.5L unit. The Camry Hybrid (A25A-FXS) has no alternator at all; 12 V charging comes from the DC-DC converter in the inverter assembly.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the diagnosis first: with the engine off the battery should read about 12.5 V, and at idle it should read 13.5-14.5 V at the battery posts. A no-charge condition with a good belt and fuse points to the alternator.
  2. If the car is a Camry Hybrid, stop โ€” there is no alternator. Charging is handled by MG1 and the DC-DC converter inside the inverter assembly, and that is a high-voltage job.
  3. Chock the rear wheels, loosen nothing else yet, and disconnect the battery negative cable with a 10 mm socket. Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post. Fit a memory saver first if you want to keep presets.
  4. Raise the front of the car with the floor jack at the factory front jack point and set both jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe. Never work under the car on the jack alone.
  5. Remove the plastic engine undercover. It is held by a mix of 10 mm bolts and plastic push clips around the perimeter; use the nylon pry tool on the clips so they survive reuse. On some trims a small front splash shield section also has to come out.
  6. Locate the alternator low on the front face of the engine, driven by the accessory belt.
  7. Release the belt tension: put the 14 mm socket on a long breaker bar or serpentine belt tool onto the automatic tensioner pulley bolt and swing it in the direction that unloads the belt. Hold it there and slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then let the tensioner back slowly.
  8. Note the belt routing with a photo before it comes off, or copy the routing diagram on the underhood label.
  9. Peel back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the 10 mm nut and lift the heavy battery cable off the stud. Keep the nut and washer together.
  10. Unplug the small connector on the alternator (voltage regulator / LIN signal) by pressing its lock tab. It is brittle if cold, so support the body of the connector when you release it.
  11. Remove the two alternator mounting bolts with the 14 mm socket. Support the alternator as the second bolt comes out โ€” the unit is heavy and will drop.
  12. Work the alternator out. On the 3.5L 2GR-FKS clearance is tighter; you may need to remove or reposition the lower air intake ducting or a plastic shield to get it past the subframe.
  13. Compare old and new units side by side: pulley diameter and rib count, connector type, amp rating and mounting ear spacing must all match.
  14. Install the new alternator, start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading the aluminum bracket, then torque them evenly.
  15. Reconnect the small regulator connector until it clicks. Clean the B+ stud with the wire brush, fit the cable, torque the 10 mm nut lightly and reseat the rubber boot fully.
  16. Route the belt back per your photo, load the tensioner again with the breaker bar and slip the belt onto the last pulley. Double-check every rib is seated in every groove before you release the tensioner.
  17. Reinstall the undercover and any splash shield, lower the car, reconnect the battery negative terminal and torque the clamp nut.
  18. Start the engine and check for belt squeal or wobble. Measure battery voltage at idle: it should be 13.5-14.5 V. Note that the Camry uses a charging control strategy, so voltage can vary with load and temperature.
  19. Take a short drive, recheck for warning lights, and reset your clock and radio presets if you did not use a memory saver.

Watch out

The 10 mm battery/B+ and 14 mm mounting-bolt sizes are standard across XV70 gas engines and I am confident in them, but confirm the exact alternator bolt and B+ terminal torque figures in the Toyota service information for your specific engine before final tightening.
