On the gas E210 Corolla - 1.8L 2ZR-FAE or 2.0L M20A-FKS - the alternator lives low on the passenger side of the engine and is easiest to reach from below through the right front wheel well. Nothing about the removal is complicated: two 14 mm bolts, one power stud nut and one plug. The time goes into taking off the under-engine cover and fender liner, and into wrestling the unit out of a tight opening.

The single thing people get wrong is the B+ terminal. It is a small stud threaded into the rectifier, it takes very little torque, and it is hot all the time. Disconnect the battery negative first, and snug that nut rather than leaning on it. The second most common mistake is buying a hybrid owner's 'alternator' - the hybrid 2ZR-FXE has no alternator, so if your 12V battery keeps dying on a hybrid, look at the 12V battery itself, the DC-DC converter and fuses instead.

Differences within the 2020-2024 generation

Tool sizes are the same on the 1.8L 2ZR-FAE and 2.0L M20A-FKS: 14 mm mounting bolts, 10 mm covers and battery, 21 mm lug nuts; only the alternator part number, amp rating and belt length differ between them, so order by engine. The 1.8L hybrid (2ZR-FXE) has no alternator or alternator drive belt - charging is handled by MG1 through the inverter's DC-DC converter.

How the job goes

  1. Confirm the car actually has an alternator: gas 1.8L (2ZR-FAE) and 2.0L (M20A-FKS) do; the 1.8L hybrid does not - it uses MG1 and the inverter's DC-DC converter.
  2. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, plug in a memory saver if you want to keep radio presets, then disconnect the 12V battery negative cable with a 10 mm wrench and tuck it aside.
  3. Loosen the right front lug nuts, jack the right front corner, set it on a jack stand, and remove the wheel.
  4. Remove the plastic under-engine cover (10 mm bolts plus push clips) and the rear section of the right front fender liner / splash shield (10 mm bolts, Phillips push screws, plastic clips) to expose the alternator and belt.
  5. Take a photo of the belt routing, then put a long-handle 3/8 in ratchet or breaker bar on the automatic tensioner pulley bolt, rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, and slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley. Let the tensioner return slowly.
  6. Pull back the rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud, remove the nut (10 mm on most units, 12 mm on some), and lift the heavy charging cable off the stud. Keep the nut - some new alternators do not include one.
  7. Press the lock tab and unplug the regulator/field harness connector. Free any harness clips or brackets attached to the alternator body.
  8. Remove the two 14 mm alternator mounting bolts (one upper, one lower). Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out and work it out through the wheel well opening - it is a tight fit and may need to be rotated.
  9. Compare the new alternator to the old one: same pulley diameter and rib count, same connector type, same amp rating and mounting ear spacing.
  10. Install the new alternator, start both 14 mm bolts by hand before tightening, then torque to spec. Reconnect the harness plug until it clicks.
  11. Clean the B+ ring terminal and stud, fit it flat, tighten the nut to spec only - the stud threads into the rectifier and will break or spin if overtightened - then apply a little dielectric grease and reseat the boot.
  12. Inspect the belt; install the new one following your routing photo, holding the tensioner back with the breaker bar. Double-check every pulley is fully seated in the ribs before releasing.
  13. Reinstall the splash shield, fender liner and under-engine cover, refit the wheel and torque lugs to 76 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  14. Reconnect the battery negative cable, start the engine, and check charging voltage at the battery: roughly 13.8-14.6 V at idle with lights off. Listen for belt squeal and confirm no charge or battery warning lights.
  15. Reset the clock and radio, and let the car idle a couple of minutes so the ECU relearns idle if you did not use a memory saver.

Watch out

The 14 mm mounting bolts, 10 mm cover/battery/B+ hardware and 21 mm lug nuts are standard for E210 gas Corollas, but check your specific B+ nut (some are 12 mm) and confirm all torque values in the Toyota service information before final tightening.

Does the Corolla Hybrid have an alternator?

No. The 2020-2024 Corolla Hybrid (2ZR-FXE) charges its 12V battery from the high-voltage system through the inverter's DC-DC converter, with MG1 acting as the generator. There is no belt-driven alternator to replace.

Do I have to remove the wheel to change the alternator?

Practically, yes. You can reach the upper bolt and connector from above, but the lower bolt, the belt and getting the unit out all require pulling the right front wheel and the rear part of the fender liner and splash shield.

What socket sizes do I need?
