On the T1 Silverado, replacing a thermostat is a straightforward bolt-off, bolt-on once you can reach it โ the housing is a sealed assembly with two or three small bolts into the aluminum block. The real work is draining the system (most trucks have no radiator petcock, so you pull the lower hose), fighting the spring band clamps, and clearing away airbox or shroud plastic. Budget more time than the flat-rate suggests if you've never bled one of these.
Access differs a lot by engine: the 5.3L and 6.2L put the housing low on the front of the block where you can reach it from underneath with extensions, while the 2.7L turbo and 3.0L Duramax bury it behind intake and charge-air plumbing. The one thing people get wrong is the refill โ these systems trap air badly, and a truck that overheats or blows cold air after the job almost always has an airlock, not a bad new thermostat. Vacuum fill it if you can, otherwise run it to full temp with the heater on max and keep topping off.

5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 use 10 mm hex head housing bolts low on the front of the block, reachable from below with a 3/8 in drive and extensions. The 2.7L L3B and 3.0L LM2 Duramax often use Torx-head fasteners and require airbox and intake duct removal first, so bring a T15-T40 bit socket set. The 3.0L Duramax uses a larger multi-port coolant/thermostat manifold and carries the most coolant, so plan for extra Dex-Cool and a longer bleed.

The 10 mm housing bolt size on the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 and the spring-clamp hose setup are solid across this generation, but fastener heads on the 2.7L L3B and 3.0L LM2 vary by build and torque values should be confirmed in a GM service manual or ACDelco procedure for your VIN before final tightening.
A 10 mm 6-point socket on a 3/8 in drive handles the thermostat housing bolts on the L84 5.3L and L87 6.2L. You'll want a 3 in and 6 in extension plus a swivel because the housing sits low and forward on the block.
Most T1 builds have no usable petcock, so you drain by releasing the lower radiator hose clamp and pulling the hose. Expect 2-3 gallons on the gas V8s and more on the 3.0L Duramax.
Almost always trapped air. Vacuum fill the system, or run it to full operating temperature with the heater on max and highest blower while topping off the surge tank, then recheck the level cold the next day.
On the Gen V 5.3L and 6.2L, GM supplies it as a complete housing assembly with the seal, and that's what you should install โ trying to reuse an aged plastic housing with a loose thermostat commonly results in a seeping joint and a repeat job.
