On the T1 Silverado 1500 the front "strut" is really a coil-over shock absorber bolted between a frame bracket at the top and the lower control arm at the bottom. That is good news: the wheel bearing, knuckle, tie rod and camber settings all stay put, so swapping complete assemblies is mostly a matter of two mounting points per side and does not automatically require an alignment. The job is the same across 2.7 turbo, 5.3 L84, 6.2 L87 and 3.0 Duramax trucks because the engine has nothing to do with the front damper.

What varies is the suspension package, not the engine. Base 2WD, Z71, Max Trailering and Trail Boss (which is factory-lifted about 2 inches) all use different part numbers, and a Trail Boss fitted with standard parts will sit low and ride badly. The one thing people get wrong: pulling the lower through-bolt with the control arm hanging in full droop. Jack the control arm up to roughly ride height first, and both removal and reinstallation of that bolt go from a fight to a two-minute job.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Fastener sizes do not change with the 2.7 turbo, 5.3 L84, 6.2 L87 or 3.0 Duramax; the front suspension hardware is common across the T1 1500 line. What changes is the part: 2WD, 4WD, Z71, Max Trailering and the factory-lifted Trail Boss each use different shock assemblies and spring rates. Diesel-equipped trucks carry more front weight and may use a heavier front spring, so order by VIN.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and spray penetrating oil on the lower through-bolt and upper mount studs (ideally the night before).
  2. Break the 22 mm lug nuts loose while the tire is on the ground.
  3. Lift the front of the truck by the frame or crossmember and set jack stands under the frame rails. Let the front suspension hang.
  4. Remove the front wheels.
  5. Locate the coil-over assembly: upper end bolts into a pocket in the frame bracket, lower eye passes through the lower control arm on a through-bolt.
  6. Support the lower control arm with a second jack and raise it slightly to take tension off the assembly. This is the step people skip and then fight the bolt.
  7. If the stabilizer link or a brake hose/ABS wire bracket blocks access, unclip or unbolt it (typically 15 mm) and set it aside without stretching the line.
  8. Remove the upper mount fasteners (typically 18 mm; use an extension and swivel from the top of the wheel well or engine bay).
  9. Remove the nut from the lower through-bolt (typically 21 mm) while holding the bolt head with a wrench, then drive the bolt out with a punch and dead blow hammer.
  10. Lower the control arm jack slightly and work the old assembly out through the wheel opening, tilting it past the upper control arm.
  11. Compare old and new units: same overall length, same spring rate marking, same upper mount orientation and lower eye bushing width. Note the orientation of the upper mount studs.
  12. Wire-brush the control arm sleeve and the upper bracket pocket, and lightly anti-seize the bolt shank.
  13. Fit the new assembly upper end into the frame bracket first, start the upper fasteners by hand, then jack the control arm until the lower eye lines up and slide the through-bolt in by hand. Use a pry bar for the last bit of alignment; never force the bolt with a hammer through misaligned holes.
  14. Snug everything by hand, then bring the suspension to ride height on the control arm jack before final torque on the lower bolt so the bushing is not preloaded in droop.
  15. Torque the upper fasteners and lower through-bolt to spec, reinstall any brackets or stabilizer links.
  16. Repeat on the other side; always replace front shocks in pairs.
  17. Refit the wheels, lower the truck, and torque the lug nuts to 140 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  18. Re-torque lug nuts after about 50 miles and get an alignment checked if the truck pulls or the steering wheel is off-center.

Watch out

The 22 mm lug nut size and 140 ft-lb lug torque are solid for the T1 Silverado 1500; the 18 mm upper and 21 mm lower shock fastener sizes are typical for this platform but check yours with a wrench before buying, and look up the shock mount torque values in a GM service manual because I will not guess them.

Do I need an alignment after replacing the front struts on a Silverado 1500?

Usually not, because this is a coil-over shock, not a MacPherson strut, so it does not carry camber or caster adjustment. Still, have the alignment checked if ride height changes noticeably or the steering wheel is off-center afterwards.

What size socket are the front shock bolts on a 2019-2024 Silverado?

Typically 18 mm on the upper mount fasteners and 21 mm on the lower control arm through-bolt and nut, with 22 mm lug nuts. Check yours with a wrench first, since some trucks have had hardware replaced.

Can I reuse the coil spring and just replace the shock?

Yes if you buy a bare shock and a proper coil spring compressor, but on the T1 most DIYers install a complete loaded assembly. Compressing a truck coil spring is genuinely dangerous without the right tool.

Why won't the lower shock bolt come out?

It is usually rusted into the control arm sleeve, and the arm hanging in droop puts side load on it. Support the control arm at ride height, soak the bolt in penetrant, then drive it out with a brass drift and dead blow hammer.
