On the T1 Silverado 1500 the front hub is a sealed bolt-in cartridge with the ABS wheel speed sensor built into it, so there is no pressing and no bearing race work. Three bolts through the back of the steering knuckle hold it in, and on 4WD trucks the CV stub axle passes through the middle of it. The mechanical part is straightforward; what makes it a two-hour job instead of a one-hour job is rust holding the hub flange in the knuckle bore.

The thing people get wrong is the ABS harness. It is not separate from the hub, so you must unplug it at the knuckle and unclip the loom before you pull the old unit, and you must route the new one exactly the same way. A harness routed over the CV boot or left out of its clip will chafe through in a few thousand miles and give you an ABS, traction and stability light all at once. Second most common mistake is pounding the new hub in over a rusty bore, which cocks the bearing and gives you a fresh growl.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Hub and fastener sizes do not change between the 2.7L turbo, 5.3L L84, 6.2L L87 and 3.0L Duramax. The real split is drivetrain: 2WD hubs have no center splines and no axle nut, 4WD hubs do and require the 36 mm axle nut socket. Trail Boss, Z71 and 22-inch-wheel trucks use the same 22 mm lug nuts and the same hub part families, but always order the hub by VIN since GM revised the assembly mid-generation.

How the job goes

  1. The night before, spray penetrating oil on the axle nut, the three hub bolt heads behind the knuckle and the seam where the hub meets the knuckle.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, loosen the 22 mm lug nuts a half turn, and on 4WD loosen the 36 mm axle nut while the wheel is still on the ground.
  3. Lift the front of the truck at the frame rail, set jack stands, and remove the wheel.
  4. Unbolt the brake caliper (guide pin bolts) and hang it from the spring or frame with a bungee; do not let it hang by the hose.
  5. Remove the caliper bracket bolts (21 mm) and lift the bracket off, then pull the rotor. If the rotor is rust-stuck, thread bolts into the two jacking holes or hit the hat area with a dead blow.
  6. Unplug the ABS/wheel speed sensor connector on the knuckle and free the harness from its clips and bracket bolt so it comes out with the hub.
  7. 4WD only: remove the axle nut and washer, then tap the CV stub axle inward with a brass or dead blow hammer until it is free of the hub splines.
  8. Remove the three hub-to-knuckle bolts from behind the knuckle. Rotate the hub flange to line up the lug studs with the access holes if needed, and use extensions plus a wobble adapter to clear the control arms and CV shaft.
  9. Work the hub out of the knuckle bore. If it is corroded in, use a bolt-on hub puller or 3-jaw slide hammer rather than hammering on the flange.
  10. Wire-brush and clean the knuckle bore and mating face until bare metal, then wipe with brake cleaner and apply a thin film of anti-seize to the bore only.
  11. Fit the new hub, start all three bolts by hand, make sure the ABS harness is routed the same way as the original, then torque the bolts in a criss-cross pattern to spec.
  12. 4WD: fit the CV splines into the hub, install the new axle nut and torque to spec with the brake held or the truck on the ground.
  13. Reconnect the ABS connector and clip the harness. Reinstall the rotor, caliper bracket and caliper, torquing each to spec.
  14. Refit the wheel, lower the truck and torque the lug nuts to 140 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  15. Pump the brake pedal until firm before moving, then test drive and confirm the ABS/traction lights go out. Clear any stored codes with a scan tool if a light stays on.

Watch out

Lug nuts (22 mm) are certain across the generation and the 4WD axle nut is 36 mm on virtually all T1 1500s; the hub bolt and caliper bracket bolt heads are 21 mm on the trucks I have worked on, but GM has used 18 mm heads on some builds, so test-fit before buying tools, and get the exact torque values from a GM service manual or AllData for your VIN.

Do I need an alignment after replacing a front hub on a Silverado 1500?

Can I replace just the bearing instead of the whole hub?

No. The T1 uses a sealed hub/bearing unit with a pressed-in flange and integrated ABS encoder; it is replaced as a complete assembly. Any bearing sold for this truck comes as a hub.

How do I know which front hub is bad?

Listen for a growl or hum that changes when you sway the truck left and right at 40-50 mph: loading the bad side usually makes it louder. Jack the wheel up, rock it at 12 and 6 o'clock for play, and spin it by hand feeling for roughness. An ABS or traction light with a wheel speed sensor code on one corner is another strong clue.
