Tools you need for wiper blades on a 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Easy · 10-15 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. Small flat-blade screwdriver
  2. Microfiber towels
  3. Needle-nose pliers (stuck tab)
  4. 13 mm socket, 3/8 in drive (arm only)

This is one of the few jobs on a T1 Silverado that needs almost no tools. Both front blades are 22 in and use the common hook (J-hook) arm end, so aftermarket beam or conventional blades fit directly with no adapter. The 2.7L turbo, 5.3L L84, 6.2L L87 and 3.0L Duramax trucks are all identical here, and no Silverado 1500 has a rear wiper.

The one thing people get wrong is trying to yank the blade straight off the hook. There is a small plastic tab on the underside of the connector that has to be pressed in first, and the blade then slides down along the hook. Force it and you bend the arm hook, which leaves the blade riding unevenly and streaking. The other common mistake is letting the bare metal arm snap down onto the windshield - lay a towel on the glass before you pull the old blade off.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

No difference by engine or trim. 2.7L turbo, 5.3L, 6.2L and 3.0L Duramax trucks in all cab and bed configurations use the same 22 in driver and 22 in passenger hook-mount front blades, and none have a rear wiper.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, turn the wipers off with the ignition on so the arms return to their rest position, then switch the ignition off.
  2. Open the hood if you want more room; on the T1 the arms sit low in the cowl and lifting the hood makes it easier to swing them up.
  3. Lift one wiper arm off the glass until it locks in the raised position. Support it - if it snaps back onto bare glass it can crack the windshield.
  4. Turn the blade so the hook connector is at roughly 90 degrees to the arm. You will see a small plastic tab on the underside of the connector.
  5. Press the tab in with a small flat-blade screwdriver (or pinch it with needle-nose pliers) and slide the blade down the hook until it comes free. Do not force it sideways.
  6. Lower the bare arm gently onto a folded towel laid on the glass.
  7. Clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel, then wipe the sweep area with isopropyl to remove wax and film.
  8. Slide the new 22 in blade up onto the hook until the tab clicks. Tug the blade firmly - if it moves on the hook it is not latched.
  9. Repeat for the other side; both sides take a 22 in blade, so no need to match left and right.
  10. Lower both arms carefully to the glass, top off the washer reservoir, then run the wipers wet through all speeds and check for chatter, streaking or the blade touching the A-pillar trim.

Watch out

The 22 in / 22 in hook-type front blade sizing and the tab-release procedure are consistent across all 2019-2024 Silverado 1500 cab styles and engines; double-check the length against your old blade or the parts-store lookup before you buy, and treat the wiper arm nut torque as unverified.

Frequently asked

What size wiper blades does a 2019-2024 Silverado 1500 take?

Both sides take a 22 in blade with a hook (J-hook) arm connector. Because driver and passenger are the same length, you can buy two identical blades.

Do I need a special tool to change Silverado 1500 wipers?

No. A small flat-blade screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to press the plastic release tab on the hook connector is the only tool, and often you can do it with a fingernail.

Why do my new Silverado wiper blades chatter or streak?

Usually leftover wax or road film on the glass, or the blade not fully latched on the hook. Clean the windshield with an ammonia-free glass cleaner and an isopropyl wipe, and tug the blade to confirm it clicked into place.

Is there a service position for the wipers on a T1 Silverado?

No wiper service mode is needed. Turn the ignition on, switch the wipers off so they park at the base of the glass, shut the ignition off, and the arms lift clear of the cowl easily.
