On the 3rd-gen Tacoma the thermostat is not up on top of the engine โ€” it sits in the water inlet housing at the lower front of the block where the lower radiator hose connects. That means the real work is draining the radiator, pulling the plastic under-cover (and skid plate if you have one), and working on your back with coolant dripping on you. The fasteners themselves are two small bolts or nuts, and the whole thing comes apart in ten minutes once you can see it.

What varies is access. The 3.5L 2GR-FKS is more crowded around the front crossmember and lines, so a 1/4 in drive ratchet and a stubby wrench earn their place. The thing people get wrong is the refill: this system holds air, and just pouring coolant into the reservoir leaves you with a no-heat heater and a temp gauge that swings. Use a spill-free funnel at the radiator neck, run it with the heater on full hot until the fan cycles, and re-check the level cold over the next few days.

Differences within the 2016-2023 generation

2GR-FKS 3.5L: water inlet housing uses two 10 mm-head bolts, and access is tighter around the front crossmember and A/C lines. 2TR-FE 2.7L: the same housing, but depending on build year it may use 12 mm nuts on studs instead of 10 mm bolts โ€” have both sizes on hand. Coolant capacity differs too: roughly 8-9 quarts for the 2.7L versus about 10-11 quarts for the 3.5L, though a drain-and-refill only replaces 2-3 gallons.

How the job goes

  1. Work on a cold engine only. Chock the rear wheels, loosen nothing hot.
  2. Remove the radiator cap and reservoir cap to vent the system (cold engine).
  3. Lift the front of the truck and set it on jack stands under the frame rails.
  4. Remove the plastic engine under-cover/splash shield and, if fitted, the front skid plate (10/12/14 mm).
  5. Slide the drain pan under the radiator, open the plastic drain cock on the lower driver-side tank and drain the radiator. Drain the reservoir too if it is full.
  6. Locate the water inlet housing at the lower front of the engine where the lower radiator hose attaches โ€” driver's side lower front on both engines.
  7. Release the spring clamp with hose clamp pliers and pull the lower radiator hose off the inlet neck. Expect another quart or two to come out.
  8. Remove the two water inlet housing fasteners (10 mm, or 12 mm nuts on studs on some 2TR-FE builds). Note whether any bracket or wire clip is captured by them.
  9. Pull the housing off and lift out the thermostat and its rubber sealing ring. Note the orientation of the jiggle valve.
  10. Scrape and wipe the aluminum sealing surfaces clean. Do not gouge them and do not use RTV โ€” this is a rubber-ring seal.
  11. Fit the new sealing ring onto the new thermostat, seat it in the block with the jiggle valve at the top (roughly the 12 o'clock position, or matching the old unit), and make sure the flange notch lines up if present.
  12. Refit the housing and start both fasteners by hand, then torque evenly to spec with the in-lb torque wrench. These threads are aluminum โ€” do not guess.
  13. Reinstall the lower radiator hose and clamp; make sure the clamp sits fully on the neck bead.
  14. Close the radiator drain cock hand-tight. Reinstall shields/skid plate and lower the truck.
  15. Fit the spill-free funnel to the radiator neck and fill slowly with Toyota pink pre-mixed SLLC until it stops taking coolant.
  16. Start the engine with the heater on full hot, high fan. Squeeze the upper hose to help move air and keep the funnel topped up as the thermostat opens and the level drops.
  17. Once the upper hose is hot and the fan has cycled, shut off, let it cool, remove the funnel, top the radiator to the neck and the reservoir to the F line, and refit both caps.
  18. Drive it, then re-check the level cold the next day and again a few days later. Expect to top off once or twice.
  19. Check the housing and hose for seepage after the first heat cycle, and confirm the temp gauge sits normal and the heater blows hot.

Watch out

Housing fastener sizes are 10 mm on the 2GR-FKS and 10 or 12 mm depending on build year on the 2TR-FE, so check with both before committing a wrench; treat the housing bolt torque and skid plate values as approximate and confirm them against the Toyota service manual for your VIN.
