Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

5.3 L L84 and 6.2 L L87 share essentially the same front-drive layout and tensioner access; a long 1/2 in breaker bar with a 15 mm socket or 3/8 in square adapter usually does it from above. The 2.7 L L3B turbo and 3.0 L LM2 Duramax need intake ducting and often the fan shroud removed, and most people need a crowfoot from a serpentine belt tool kit rather than a plain socket. Belt length and rib count differ between all four engines, so order by VIN โ€” do not reuse a part number from a different engine.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the wheels, let the engine cool completely, and disconnect nothing electrical unless you plan to remove the alternator โ€” the belt job itself needs no battery disconnect.
  2. Photograph the existing belt routing from several angles and compare it to the underhood decal if present. This is the single most important step.
  3. Remove the engine appearance cover (pulls off studs or 10 mm fasteners) and any air intake duct blocking access. On the 2.7 turbo and 3.0 Duramax also loosen the charge-air/intake plumbing clamps (7-8 mm or 10 mm) and set the duct aside.
  4. If access from above is blocked, remove the upper fan shroud or the passenger-side inner fender splash shield (10 mm and Torx fasteners) to reach the tensioner and to get the belt past the fan.
  5. Spin each pulley and idler by hand. Listen for bearing roughness and check the tensioner pulley face for wobble; replace anything suspect while the belt is off.
  6. Fit the correct crowfoot or low-profile socket from the serpentine belt tool on the tensioner arm hex or square drive, and attach the long flex handle or 1/2 in breaker bar with adapter.
  7. Rotate the tensioner in the direction that unloads the belt (usually clockwise on the V8s as viewed from the front) until the belt goes slack, then slip the belt off the smoothest accessible pulley โ€” typically the alternator or an idler.
  8. Let the tensioner return slowly. Never let it snap. Remove the belt by threading it out past the fan or through the frame rail area.
  9. Clean each pulley groove with a shop towel and non-chlorinated brake cleaner. If a groove is oily, find and fix the leak before installing the new belt.
  10. Compare the new belt to the old one side by side: same length, same rib count, same rib pattern on each face.
  11. Route the new belt over all pulleys except the one you will use last, following your photo. Keep the flat back of the belt against the smooth idlers and the ribs in the grooved pulleys.
  12. Rotate the tensioner again, slide the last loop of belt into place, then release the tensioner gradually.
  13. Walk around the engine with a flashlight and verify every rib sits in its groove on every pulley, with no rib hanging off the edge.
  14. Reinstall the shroud, ducting and engine cover. Torque any fastener you removed to spec and avoid overtightening into aluminum.
  15. Start the engine and let it idle 2-3 minutes. Watch the belt track and listen for chirp or squeal. Shut it off and re-verify belt seating.
