The T1 Silverado belt job is genuinely easy on the 5.3 L L84 and 6.2 L L87 โ pull the plastic engine cover, get a long bar on the tensioner, swing it, and the belt comes off in a few minutes. The 2.7 L turbo and 3.0 L Duramax are the same concept in a much tighter engine bay: you usually give up 20-40 minutes to intake ducting, the fan shroud or a splash shield before you can even get a tool on the tensioner.
The mistake people make is not the tensioner, it is routing. These engines have several smooth idlers where the flat back of the belt rides, and it is very easy to seat the belt one rib off on the A/C compressor or alternator. Take photos before you touch anything, then check every pulley with a flashlight before you crank it.

5.3 L L84 and 6.2 L L87 share essentially the same front-drive layout and tensioner access; a long 1/2 in breaker bar with a 15 mm socket or 3/8 in square adapter usually does it from above. The 2.7 L L3B turbo and 3.0 L LM2 Duramax need intake ducting and often the fan shroud removed, and most people need a crowfoot from a serpentine belt tool kit rather than a plain socket. Belt length and rib count differ between all four engines, so order by VIN โ do not reuse a part number from a different engine.

GM treats it as an inspect-and-replace-as-needed item rather than a fixed interval. Most owners inspect around 60,000 miles with a rib wear gauge and replace when rib depth is gone, the belt is glazed or oil-soaked, or the tensioner is noisy.
On the Gen V V8s the tensioner is released by rotating the arm clockwise as viewed from the front of the engine, which unloads the belt. Feel it out gently with the bar โ the correct direction moves freely against spring pressure, the wrong direction hits a hard stop immediately.
Not usually on the V8s. On the 2.7 turbo and especially the 3.0 Duramax, removing the upper shroud or the passenger-side inner fender splash shield is often the only way to feed the belt past the fan.
Only if they need it, but check carefully while the belt is off: spin every pulley by hand and feel for roughness, and look for wobble on the tensioner pulley face. A chirping or fluttering belt before replacement almost always means the tensioner is weak.
