Front brakes on the T1 Silverado are one of the friendlier jobs on this truck. The caliper comes off two guide pin bolts with a 3/8 in hex bit, the bracket comes off with a 21 mm socket, and the rotor just slides off — there is no retaining screw and no electronic retract procedure, because the electric parking brake on these trucks only works the rear calipers. Budget most of your time for rust, not fasteners.

The two things people get wrong: they skip cleaning the hub face, then chase a brake pulsation that is really lateral runout from rust trapped under the new rotor; and they under-torque the caliper bracket bolts because they used a 3/8 in ratchet instead of a torque wrench. Also order parts by measuring your old rotor — the heavy-duty/Max Trailering brake package uses a larger front rotor than the base setup, and the parts counter will often hand you the wrong one based on VIN alone.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Socket sizes are the same across the 2.7 turbo, 5.3 L84, 6.2 L87 and 3.0 Duramax: 22 mm lugs, 21 mm caliper bracket bolts, 3/8 in hex guide pins. What changes is brake hardware size, not tools — 6.2 L and Max Trailering / NHT-equipped trucks and many Trail Boss/High Country builds use larger front rotors and twin-piston calipers, so pad and rotor part numbers and bracket bolt torque differ. Measure the old rotor diameter and thickness before ordering.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, leave the truck in Park with the parking brake set (front job, so the rear EPB can stay engaged). Crack the lug nuts loose with a 22 mm socket before lifting.
  2. Lift the front at the frame rail behind the front wheel or the factory lift point and set jack stands under the frame. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and, if the fluid is near full, draw some out with a syringe so pushing the pistons back does not overflow it.
  4. Pry the caliper slightly with a flat bar to back the pads off the rotor. Remove the two guide pin bolts with the 3/8 in hex bit socket and lift the caliper off the bracket.
  5. Support the caliper with a bungee cord from the coil spring. Never let it hang on the flexible brake hose.
  6. Slide the old pads out of the bracket and note how the wear clips and any shims are oriented.
  7. Remove the two 21 mm caliper bracket bolts from the back of the steering knuckle and lift the bracket off.
  8. Pull the rotor straight off. If it is rust-welded, hit the hat area between the studs with a dead blow hammer, or thread M8 x 1.25 bolts into the rotor's jacking holes and tighten them evenly to push it off. Penetrating oil around the hub center helps.
  9. Clean the hub mounting face down to bare metal with a wire brush or a drill-mounted hub cleaning disc. Any rust or scale under the rotor causes runout and pedal pulsation.
  10. Wipe a very thin film of anti-seize on the hub face and pilot, keeping it away from the friction surfaces and studs.
  11. Clean the new rotor faces with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil, then fit it over the studs. Snug it with two lug nuts so it stays flat.
  12. Clean the bracket abutment surfaces, fit new abutment clips if supplied, and apply a thin smear of silicone caliper grease where the pad ears slide.
  13. Install the bracket and torque the two 21 mm bolts to spec in the service manual; these are high-torque bolts, do not guess with a hand ratchet.
  14. Pull the guide pins out of the caliper, wipe them, inspect the boots for tears, and re-grease with silicone brake lube. Replace any torn boots.
  15. Compress the piston(s) squarely with a C-clamp or spreader using an old pad as a pressure plate. On twin-piston calipers push both pistons evenly.
  16. Install the new pads in the bracket, set the caliper over them, and torque the guide pin bolts to spec.
  17. Reinstall wheels, hand-snug the 22 mm lug nuts in a star pattern, lower the truck, then final torque to 140 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  18. Pump the brake pedal until it is firm before moving the truck. Check and top off the fluid level, then reinstall the cap.
  19. Bed the pads in: from about 35 mph, apply moderate braking to 5 mph six to eight times without stopping, then drive several minutes without using the brakes to cool them.

Watch out

Lug nuts are 22 mm, the caliper bracket bolts are 21 mm and the guide pin bolts take a 3/8 in (roughly 10 mm) internal hex on the vast majority of T1 Silverado 1500s, but check your guide pin head before ordering bits since some replacement calipers use a 13 mm or E-Torx head; confirm the bracket bolt and guide pin torque figures in a GM service manual for your exact brake package.
