On the 10th-gen Accord the thermostat is not in the upper hose where many people look for it. All three powertrains put it in a housing on the lower front of the block where the lower radiator hose lands, so the job is really a coolant drain plus dropping the plastic under-tray, then two small bolts. Tool-wise it is cheap: 10 mm and 12 mm sockets, a couple of extensions, hose clamp pliers and a funnel kit.

What varies is access. The 1.5T gives the most room, the 2.0T has more plumbing in the way, and the hybrid demands you disable the high-voltage system first and know that its electric coolant pump can cause the same symptoms as a bad thermostat. The mistake people make is the refill — these engines trap air readily, and skipping a proper burp with a spill-free funnel and two fan cycles leads to an overheat scare on the first drive and a false conclusion that the new thermostat is bad.

Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

1.5T (L15BE) and 2.0T (K20C4) both use a block-mounted housing with two bolts, most commonly 10 mm heads on M6 fasteners; some 2.0T housings use 12 mm heads, so carry both. The hybrid's 2.0 Atkinson (LFA) uses the same tooling but a different thermostat part number and requires the high-voltage service disconnect procedure before you start. Under-tray fasteners are 10 mm on all trims, with more plastic clips on Sport and Touring aero trays.

How the job goes

  1. Park level, chock the rear wheels and let the engine cool completely — an hour minimum, longer if it was driven hard. Never open a hot system.
  2. Hybrid only: switch off, remove the key from the vehicle, then remove the high-voltage service disconnect (under the rear seat / trunk area per the manual) and wait 10 minutes before working near orange cables. Wear insulated gloves.
  3. Remove the radiator cap (and coolant reservoir cap) to vent the system so it drains freely.
  4. Raise the front of the car with the floor jack at the factory point and set it on jack stands.
  5. Remove the plastic engine under-tray: 10 mm bolts plus plastic fir-tree clips popped with a trim tool. Set the hardware aside in order; the clips break easily if you pry at the wrong angle.
  6. Place the drain pan under the radiator, open the plastic drain plug on the lower driver-side tank by hand or with a flat screwdriver and drain the coolant. Expect roughly 3-4 quarts from a radiator drain.
  7. Locate the thermostat housing on the lower front of the engine block where the lower radiator hose terminates — transmission side on the 1.5T and 2.0T, similar position on the hybrid 2.0 Atkinson. Confirm by following the lower hose.
  8. Slide the hose clamp back with hose clamp pliers, twist the hose to break the seal (work a pick around the neck if it is stuck) and pull it off. More coolant will come out, so reposition the pan.
  9. Remove the two housing bolts (10 mm head on most, 12 mm on some 2.0T housings) and pull the cover and thermostat off. Note the orientation of the jiggle valve or air bleed notch — it usually points up.
  10. Scrape and wipe the aluminum sealing face clean with a plastic scraper. Do not gouge it and do not use a wire wheel.
  11. Fit the new thermostat with its new rubber seal, orienting the bleed/jiggle valve exactly as the old one sat. No sealant is needed on an O-ring or rubber-seal thermostat.
  12. Install the cover bolts finger-tight, then torque evenly to spec. These thread into aluminum — do not lean on the wrench.
  13. Reattach the lower radiator hose, seat it fully on the neck and set the clamp back into its original groove.
  14. Close the radiator drain plug hand-tight. Reinstall the under-tray.
  15. Lower the car. Fit the spill-free funnel to the radiator neck and fill with Honda Type 2 blue coolant until it holds a level in the funnel.
  16. Start the engine with the funnel attached and heater set to full hot, fan on low. Let it idle and watch the level drop as air burps out; top up as needed. Squeeze the upper hose a few times to help air move.
  17. Run until the thermostat opens and the upper hose gets hot and the cooling fans cycle on at least twice. Watch ECT on a scan tool if you have one; it should climb steadily to about 190-205 F and stabilize.
  18. Shut off, remove the funnel, set the radiator level to the neck, reinstall the cap and fill the reservoir to the MAX line.
  19. Let it cool fully, then recheck both radiator and reservoir levels and top up. Repeat after the next couple of drive cycles.
  20. Test drive and confirm no leaks at the housing, steady temperature gauge, strong heat from the vents and no P0128 or P0217 codes.

Watch out

The 10 mm / 12 mm housing bolt sizes, 10 mm under-tray bolts and the lower-hose-side housing location are consistent across the 10th-gen Accord, but bolt head size can vary between the 1.5T, 2.0T and hybrid housings — check yours before buying, and confirm the thermostat part number by VIN as well as the torque figures in the factory service manual.
