On the T1 Silverado 1500 a rotation is about as simple as truck maintenance gets: every engine, from the 2.7 turbo to the 6.2 and the 3.0 Duramax, uses the same 6x139.7 hub with M14x1.5 studs and 22 mm lug nuts torqued to 140 ft-lb. The heavy lifting is literal โ€” you need a jack and stands rated for a 5,000-plus-pound truck, and you want a 1/2 in breaker bar because 140 ft-lb nuts that have been on for 7,500 miles do not come off with a 3/8 in ratchet.

Two things trip people up. First, the two-piece capped lug nuts: the chrome cap corrodes and swells, your 22 mm socket no longer fits, and people start beating on sockets instead of just replacing the nuts. Second, GM's TPMS shows pressure by corner, so after you move the wheels around the display is wrong until you run the relearn from the DIC with a trigger tool or by bleeding air at each wheel in the left-front, right-front, right-rear, left-rear order.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Lug nut size, stud thread, bolt pattern and 140 ft-lb torque are identical across the 2.7 turbo, 5.3, 6.2 and 3.0 Duramax. What changes is wheel size (17 in steel on WT up to 22 in alloy on High Country), which only affects how deep and thin-walled your 22 mm socket needs to be, and placard tire pressure, which varies by tire size and payload package.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, set the parking brake, chock the wheels that stay down. If equipped with an electronic parking brake, no service mode is needed for a rotation, but leave it set.
  2. Note and record current pressures and tread depths at each corner so you can track wear.
  3. With the tires still on the ground, break each lug nut loose about half a turn with the 22 mm socket and breaker bar.
  4. Lift one end of the truck: front at the lower control arm jack pads or the crossmember pad shown in the owner's manual; rear on the axle tube near the spring perch. Set jack stands under the boxed frame rails and lower onto them.
  5. Remove the wheels. Wire-brush the hub face and check for cracked studs, loose brake caliper bracket bolts, torn CV boots and rotor condition while you are in there.
  6. Rotate the tires. Non-directional tires on a 4WD/AWD or 2WD with matching sizes: rears go straight forward, fronts cross to the opposite rear. Directional tires: swap front-to-rear on the same side only. Staggered or different front/rear sizes (some 22 in packages): do not rotate front-to-rear.
  7. Wipe a light film of anti-seize on the hub center register only โ€” keep it off the studs, nut seats and rotor face.
  8. Hang each wheel, start all six nuts by hand, then snug them in a star pattern with the wheel just off the ground.
  9. Lower to the ground and torque the nuts to 140 ft-lb in a criss-cross star pattern, in two passes.
  10. Set all four pressures to the door-jamb placard value (commonly 35 psi front and rear on 1500s; heavy-payload and 22 in packages differ โ€” read your placard).
  11. Run the GM TPMS relearn: key on, engine off, use the DIC/infotainment Tire Pressure menu to select Relearn, then starting at the left front go clockwise, triggering each sensor with the relearn tool or letting air out for ~10 seconds until the horn chirps. Turn the ignition off to store.
  12. Re-check lug torque after 50-100 miles, especially on aftermarket or refinished wheels.
