Tools you need for oil change on a 2018-2022 Honda Accord

All three 10th-gen Accord powertrains make this an easy first job: one 17 mm drain bolt in an aluminum pan, one spin-on filter, and a plastic undertray held on with 10 mm bolts and push clips. The only tool you may not already own is the 64.5 mm 14-flute cap wrench that fits Honda's A01/A02 filter - a claw or strap wrench usually will not fit in the space available.

What varies is capacity, not tooling: the 1.5T takes roughly 3.7 quarts, the 2.0T about 5.7, the hybrid around 4.2. The mistakes people make are reusing the old crush washer (then chasing a slow drip for months) and putting an impact gun on the drain bolt, which pulls the threads out of the aluminum pan. Also don't forget the oil life reset - the Accord will not do it for you.

Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

Tool sizes are identical across 1.5T, 2.0T and the 2.0 hybrid: 17 mm drain bolt, 14 mm crush washer, 64.5 mm 14-flute filter, 10 mm undertray bolts. Only the fill volume differs - approximately 3.7 qt (1.5T), 5.7 qt (2.0T) and 4.2 qt (hybrid) with a new filter. All three use 0W-20 full synthetic.

How the job goes

1. Run the engine 3-5 minutes so the oil is warm but not scalding, then shut it off and let it sit a few minutes.
2. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front at the factory jack point on the front crossmember, and set jack stands under the front pinch welds.
3. Remove the plastic lower engine cover: 10 mm bolts around the perimeter plus several push-in plastic clips. Keep the fasteners in a tray - the clips are easy to lose.
4. Locate the drain bolt on the bottom of the aluminum oil pan. Position the drain pan slightly rearward of it, since warm oil shoots out at an angle.
5. Break the 17 mm drain bolt loose, then spin it out by hand. Let it drain 5-10 minutes until it slows to a drip.
6. Peel the old aluminum crush washer off the drain bolt, wipe the bolt and pan surface clean, fit a new 94109-14000 washer, and torque the bolt to 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Do not use an impact.
7. Slide the drain container under the spin-on filter (front/lower side of the block). Fit the 64.5 mm 14-flute cap wrench on a 3/8 in ratchet and loosen the filter counterclockwise, then unscrew it by hand - expect a spill.
8. Wipe the filter mounting boss clean and make sure the old rubber gasket did not stay stuck to it.
9. Smear fresh oil on the new filter's gasket, thread it on by hand until the gasket touches, then tighten 3/4 turn further (a firm pull with the cap wrench, not a heave).
10. Reinstall the lower engine cover, snap the plastic clips home, and start the 10 mm bolts by hand so you do not cross-thread the plastic.
11. Lower the car. Remove the oil fill cap and add oil through a funnel: start with about 3.2 qt on the 1.5T, 5.2 qt on the 2.0T, 3.8 qt on the hybrid, then check the dipstick.
12. Wait a minute, pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert and read. Top up in 0.2 qt increments to the upper mark. Do not overfill - the 1.5T is sensitive to fuel dilution and high level.
13. Start the engine, let the oil pressure light go out, and idle for 30 seconds. Check under the car for leaks at the drain bolt and filter, then shut off and recheck the level after 5 minutes.
14. Reset the oil life: on models with the touchscreen, Home > Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance Info > Reset, or use the steering-wheel selector to bring up Oil Life on the driver display and press and hold the select button until it resets to 100%.
15. Take the used oil and filter to a recycling center.

Watch out

The 17 mm drain bolt, 14 mm crush washer, 64.5 mm 14-flute filter wrench and 0W-20 spec are consistent across all 10th-gen Accord powertrains; double-check the exact fill capacity for your engine on the owner's manual page or underhood label before you buy oil.
