Front brakes on the 10th-gen Accord are about as friendly as modern brakes get. Single-piston sliding calipers, two 12 mm hex-head slide pin bolts to get the caliper off, two 17 mm bolts to pull the bracket, and nothing electronic to disable because the parking brake motors are on the rear wheels. If you have a 1/2 in breaker bar, a torque wrench and a piston spreader, both corners are a comfortable afternoon.

The two things people get wrong: the rotor retaining screws and the hub face. Those little screws corrode into the rotor and strip instantly under a hand screwdriver, so use a hand impact driver with a #3 Phillips or 8 mm hex bit and hit it once, hard. Then scrub every bit of rust scale off the hub face before the new rotor goes on - leaving it is the usual cause of a pulsating pedal a few thousand miles after a pad-and-rotor job.

Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

Fastener sizes are the same across 1.5T, 2.0T and Hybrid: 12 mm slide pin bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts, 19 mm lug nuts. What changes is the hardware size - 1.5T and Hybrid use roughly 11.5 in (293 mm) front rotors with the smaller pad, while the 2.0T and Sport 2.0T use roughly 12.3 in (315-320 mm) rotors with a larger caliper bracket and pad. Order parts by measuring the old rotor, not by year alone.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and leave the electric parking brake ON while you work on the front only. Crack the lug nuts loose before lifting.
  2. Open the brake fluid reservoir cap and check the level; if it is at MAX, remove a little fluid with a syringe so pushing the pistons back does not overflow it. Loosely reinstall the cap.
  3. Lift the front with the floor jack at the pinch-weld jack point, set jack stands under the reinforced points or subframe, and remove both front wheels.
  4. Optional but helpful: pry gently between the old rotor and pad to push the piston back a few millimeters before unbolting anything.
  5. Remove the two 12 mm slide pin bolts (upper and lower). If a pin spins, hold its flats with a 12 mm wrench.
  6. Swing/lift the caliper off the pads and hang it from the coil spring with a bungee cord. Never let it hang on the flexible brake hose.
  7. Pull the outer and inner pads out of the bracket, then pop the two stainless pad retaining clips off the bracket and note how they sit.
  8. Remove the two 17 mm caliper mounting bracket bolts and lift the bracket off the knuckle.
  9. Remove the two rotor retaining screws with a hand impact driver and #3 Phillips or 8 mm hex bit. Seat the bit fully and hit it hard once - these strip easily. If a screw is destroyed, drill it out or simply omit it once the wheel is torqued.
  10. Pull the rotor. If it is rust-bonded to the hub, strike the rotor face between the studs with a dead blow, or thread two M8 bolts into the puller holes and turn them evenly.
  11. Wire-brush all rust off the hub face and the pilot hub ring until it is bright and flat. Any scale here causes brake pedal pulsation later.
  12. Spray the new rotor both sides with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil, wipe dry, then fit it over the studs and secure with the retaining screws (light anti-seize on the threads only).
  13. Clean the caliper bracket slide surfaces, reinstall it on the knuckle, and torque the 17 mm bolts to spec.
  14. Pull the slide pins out of their boots, wipe them, and re-grease with the correct silicone/molykote pin grease. Check the rubber boots for tears and replace if split.
  15. Install the new pad retaining clips, then the pads with new shims. Put a small amount of caliper grease on the pad ear contact points and the back of the pad where it contacts the piston/shim - never on the friction surface.
  16. Compress the caliper piston fully with a spreader or C-clamp, using the old pad as a pad to protect the piston boot. Press straight in and watch the fluid reservoir.
  17. Set the caliper back over the pads and torque the 12 mm slide pin bolts to 19 ft-lb (26 Nm). Check that the brake hose is not twisted or touching the rotor or spring.
  18. Repeat on the other side, then set the fluid level to MAX, reinstall the wheels, and torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern with the car back on the ground.
  19. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal until it goes firm - typically 5-15 strokes. On a Hybrid, cycle the ignition on and pump again so the electric servo system re-establishes pressure. Do not move the car with a soft pedal.
  20. Bed in the new pads: about 6-8 moderate stops from 40 mph to 10 mph, then a couple of harder ones, then drive a few miles without dragging the brakes to let them cool. Avoid sitting with your foot on the pedal while everything is hot.
  21. Re-torque the lug nuts after 50 miles.
