Differences within the 2018-2022 generation

Socket and bit sizes are identical across 1.5T, 2.0T and Hybrid: 19 mm lugs, 12 mm caliper guide-pin bolts, 17 mm caliper bracket bolts. The difference is parts, not tools โ€” 2.0T Sport and Touring models with the larger wheel package use a bigger rear rotor and a matching pad set, so verify rotor diameter by VIN. All trims have the same electric parking brake actuator and need the same service-mode procedure.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the front wheels, and loosen the rear lug nuts a quarter turn while the car is still down.
  2. With the ignition on, connect the scan tool and run the electric parking brake service/maintenance mode to fully retract both rear pistons. Leave the system in service mode.
  3. Turn the ignition off, jack the rear, set jack stands under the rated points, and remove both rear wheels.
  4. If you have no scan tool: unplug the EPB motor connector and unbolt the actuator motor from the back of the caliper (2 bolts), then lift it off with its gear. Do not pull the wiring.
  5. Remove the two 12 mm guide-pin bolts, slide the caliper off the bracket, and hang it from the spring or trailing arm with a bungee. Never let it dangle on the hose.
  6. Pop the old pads and the pad retainer clips out of the bracket. Note which pad had the wear sensor/shim orientation.
  7. Push the piston fully back with a C-clamp (straight in โ€” these rear pistons do not screw in on the 10th gen, they are retracted by the EPB motor).
  8. Remove the two 17 mm bracket bolts and take the caliper bracket off, then remove the rotor retaining screw (8 mm hex, T40, or #3 Phillips) with a good-fitting bit.
  9. If the rotor is stuck, thread M8x1.25 bolts into the rotor's threaded holes and tighten evenly to press it off the hub, and tap around the hat with a hammer.
  10. Wire-brush the hub face clean and apply a thin film of anti-seize or hub paste to the flange only โ€” keep it off the stud threads and friction surface.
  11. Wash the new rotor with brake cleaner to remove the shipping oil, fit it, and snug the retaining screw.
  12. Clean and file the bracket pad abutments, fit new stainless retainer clips, and grease the clip contact points and pad ears lightly.
  13. Refit the bracket with the 17 mm bolts to spec, install the pads with the wear indicator in its original position, then slide the caliper on and torque the 12 mm guide-pin bolts. Grease the guide pins with silicone brake grease if you pulled them.
  14. Refit the EPB actuator motor and reconnect its plug if you removed it.
  15. Refit the wheels, lower the car, and torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. Use the scan tool to exit service mode and run the EPB calibration/reset so the motors re-seek the pads. Apply and release the parking brake a few times and check for the dash light.
  17. Pump the brake pedal until firm before moving, then bed the brakes: 6-8 moderate stops from 40 to 10 mph, then drive a few miles without holding the brakes to cool them.
  18. Recheck lug torque after 50 miles.

Watch out

The 12 mm guide-pin bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts, 19 mm lug nuts and the 80 ft-lb lug torque are solid for this generation; the caliper and actuator torque figures and the exact rotor screw head (hex vs Torx vs Phillips) vary by build, so check them against the factory service manual or your own hardware before final assembly.
