Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2022-2024 Honda Civic

Moderate · 20-30 min for a 9005 high-beam bulb; 1.5-2.5 hours for a full headlight assembly replacement · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  2. Ratchet with 3 in and 6 in extensions
  3. #2 Phillips screwdriver
  4. Plastic trim/clip removal tool set
  5. Panel clip pliers (bumper push clips)

On the 11th-generation Civic, Honda made LED low beams standard across the range, and that changed this job completely. There is no bulb, no dust cap and no twist-lock socket behind the low beam - the LED board and its optics are bonded inside the sealed housing. If your low beam is out, the fix is a complete headlight assembly, and getting to its three 10 mm bolts means loosening the front bumper cover on that side.

What varies by trim is the housing itself: LX and Sport use an LED reflector unit, while EX, EX-L, Si, Touring and Type R use LED projectors, and they are not interchangeable. The mistake people make is buying an H11 or 9006 bulb based on an older Civic listing, or pulling the fender liner looking for a low-beam socket that does not exist. Before ordering anything, check whether the dead light is really the low beam and not the halogen 9005 high beam, which genuinely is a five-minute bulb swap through the wheel well on LX, Sport and EX cars.

Differences within the 2022-2024 generation

Engine choice (2.0 K20C2 vs 1.5 turbo vs 2.0 turbo Type R) makes no difference to headlight service - the tool sizes are identical. Trim does matter: LX/Sport/EX have a halogen 9005 high beam behind the housing, while Touring and Type R use LED high beams with no serviceable bulb, and LX/Sport reflector housings differ in part number and connector detail from EX-and-up projector housings.

Torque specs

Front wheel lug nuts80 ft-lb (108 Nm)
Headlight assembly mounting bolts (10 mm head)verify in the service manual (low, roughly 7 ft-lb / 9 Nm class fastener - do not overtighten into plastic)
Bumper cover and fender liner boltsverify in the service manual (snug only, plastic threads)

How the job goes

  1. Confirm what actually failed: switch on the lights and check whether the low beam, high beam or DRL segment is out. If the low beam LED is dark, no bulb swap will fix it - the module is sealed in the housing.
  2. If it is the high beam on an LX, Sport or EX: turn the steering to full lock away from that side, remove the fender liner screws and push clips with a #2 Phillips and clip pliers, fold the liner back, reach the back of the headlight, twist the 9005 bulb socket counterclockwise, unplug it, and fit the new bulb without touching the glass. Reinstall the liner and test.
  3. For a low-beam (assembly) replacement, first disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10 mm socket and wait a few minutes.
  4. Open the hood and remove the 10 mm bolts and push clips along the top edge of the bumper cover and the upper grille trim. Use nylon pry tools to release the hidden top clips.
  5. Turn the wheels and remove the front wheel arch liner screws and clips on the affected side, plus the 10 mm/8 mm fasteners along the lower bumper edge and undertray.
  6. Free the bumper cover corner from the fender: pull the wheel-arch edge outward to release the two side clips, then slide the corner forward. On the 11th gen you usually only need to release one side and swing the cover away, not remove it completely - support the loose end with a towel or have a helper hold it.
  7. Unplug the headlight connector (press the tab, do not pull on the wires) and any side marker or turn signal connector routed to the housing.
  8. Remove the three 10 mm headlight mounting bolts - two on top and one on the outboard/lower side - using extensions as needed. Note the locating tab on the inboard edge.
  9. Ease the old headlight forward and out. Compare the new assembly part number and connector plug to the old one before fitting - reflector and projector housings are not interchangeable between trims.
  10. Seat the new headlight on its locating tab, start all three bolts by hand, then snug them evenly. Plug in the connector with a light smear of dielectric grease on the pins.
  11. Refit the bumper corner, liner and top fasteners, replacing any broken push clips. Torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lb if a wheel was removed.
  12. Reconnect the battery. Turn on the lights and verify low beam, high beam, DRL and turn signal all work, and check for dash warning lights.
  13. Aim the beams: park 25 ft from a flat wall on level ground, mark the height of the headlight centers, and use the vertical adjuster screw on top of the housing so the horizontal cutoff sits at or just below that mark, matched side to side.

Watch out

The 10 mm bumper/headlight bolts, 9005 high beam on LX/Sport/EX, 19 mm lug nuts and 80 ft-lb lug torque are solid for this generation; confirm the exact headlight part number for your trim and verify the small plastic-thread bolt torques in the factory service information.

Frequently asked

What low-beam bulb does a 2022-2024 Honda Civic use?

None - it does not use a replaceable bulb. All trims have a sealed LED low-beam module built into the headlight assembly, so a failed low beam means replacing the whole housing on that side.

Can I replace just the LED module instead of the whole headlight?

Honda does not sell the low-beam LED board or its driver as a separate part, so the official repair is a complete assembly. Some independent shops will open and rebuild a housing, but it breaks the factory seal and can lead to moisture problems.

Which bulb is the high beam and how hard is it to change?

On LX, Sport and EX trims the high beam is a 9005/HB3 halogen. Turn the wheel to full lock, pull back the front fender liner, twist the socket out of the rear of the housing, and swap it - about 20 minutes with a #2 Phillips and clip pliers. Touring and Type R have LED high beams with no bulb.

Do I have to remove the whole front bumper to change a Civic headlight?

Not completely. You remove the top bumper bolts and clips, the fender liner fasteners and the lower edge fasteners, then release just the one bumper corner so it swings away from the fender, which exposes the three 10 mm headlight bolts.
