Tools you need for oil change on a 2022-2024 Honda Civic

Easy · 45-60 minutes · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 17 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  2. 64-65 mm oil filter cap wrench
  3. 10 mm socket for splash shield
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive
  5. Drain pan, 6+ qt capacity

On the 11th-gen Civic this is one of the easiest jobs on the car, with one annoyance: the spin-on oil filter lives on the back of the block pointing down and slightly rearward, so you need to pull the front section of the plastic underbody shield and use a 64-65 mm cap-style filter wrench on an extension. A strap wrench will fight you in that space. Everything else is a 17 mm drain bolt, a new crush washer and 0W-20 full synthetic.

What varies is capacity, not tool sizes: the 1.5 turbo takes about 3.7 US qt with a filter and the 2.0L takes about 4.4 US qt, so buying one 5 qt jug covers either but you must fill to the dipstick, not to the jug. The two things people get wrong are over-torquing the drain bolt into the aluminum pan (29 ft-lb, that's it) and forgetting to reset the maintenance minder through the steering-wheel controls.

Differences within the 2022-2024 generation

Tool sizes are the same across the 1.5T, 2.0L and Si/Type R: 17 mm drain bolt, 10 mm splash shield bolts, 64-65 mm 14-flute filter wrench. Only the fill quantity differs — roughly 3.7 US qt for the 1.5T (Sport/EX/Touring/Si), 4.4 US qt for the 2.0L LX/Sport, and more for the FL5 Type R's K20C1 (verify in the service manual). All use 0W-20 full synthetic.

Torque specs

Underbody splash shield bolts7 ft-lb (9 Nm) — snug only, plastic and sheet metal

How the job goes

  1. Warm the engine for 3-5 minutes so the oil flows, then shut it off and let it sit a few minutes. Hot oil burns.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front on the subframe/designated lift point and set jack stands under the pinch welds. Confirm the car is stable.
  3. Remove the front section of the plastic underbody splash shield: typically 10 mm bolts plus plastic push-pin clips. Note which fastener came from which hole.
  4. Position the drain pan, then break the 17 mm drain bolt loose with a 3/8 in ratchet and remove it by hand. Let the oil drain 10-15 minutes until it drips.
  5. Move the pan under the oil filter on the rear of the block. Fit the 64-65 mm cap wrench on an extension and turn the filter counterclockwise; expect oil to run down the pan area, so reposition the drain pan or add a second catch.
  6. Wipe the filter mounting flange clean. Smear fresh oil on the new filter's rubber gasket, thread it on by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten about 7/8 turn (roughly 16 ft-lb).
  7. Fit a new 14 mm crush washer to the drain bolt, thread it in by hand, then torque to 29 ft-lb (39 Nm). Do not lean on it — the pan is aluminum.
  8. Reinstall the splash shield, lower the car, then add oil: about 3.4 qt (3.2 L) for the 1.5T or 4.0 qt (3.8 L) for the 2.0L to start.
  9. Run the engine 30 seconds, shut off, wait 3 minutes, then check the dipstick and top up to the upper mark. Final capacity with filter is roughly 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) for the 1.5T and 4.4 US qt (4.2 L) for the 2.0L.
  10. Check the drain bolt and filter for leaks with the engine running, then reset the maintenance minder: press the steering-wheel select/reset until Oil Life shows, hold about 10 seconds until it blinks, then press and hold again to reset to 100%.
  11. Dispose of the used oil and filter at an auto parts store or recycling center.

Watch out

The 10 mm shield bolts, 17 mm drain bolt, 64-65 mm 14-flute filter wrench and 0W-20 spec are standard across 11th-gen Civics; confirm your exact capacity and the drain bolt torque against the owner's manual or service data for your engine before the final fill.

Frequently asked

How much oil does a 2022-2024 Honda Civic take?

The 1.5L turbo takes about 3.7 US qt (3.5 L) with a new filter and the 2.0L K20C2 takes about 4.4 US qt (4.2 L). Add slightly less than that, run the engine briefly, then top up to the upper dipstick mark.

What size socket is the oil drain plug on an 11th-gen Civic?

A 17 mm 6-point socket on a 3/8 in drive. Torque it to 29 ft-lb (39 Nm) with a new 14 mm crush washer, since the pan is aluminum.

What size oil filter wrench do I need?

A 64-65 mm, 14-flute cap-type wrench that takes a 3/8 in drive. Run it on a short extension so you can reach the filter on the rear of the block.

How do I reset the oil life on a 2022+ Civic?

With the ignition on, use the steering-wheel select/reset control to bring up Oil Life in the driver display, hold it about 10 seconds until the value blinks, then press and hold again until it resets to 100%.
