On the 11th-gen Civic the front wheel bearing lives inside the aluminium steering knuckle rather than bolting on as a simple flanged cartridge, so this is a full teardown job: axle nut, caliper, rotor, tie rod, ball joint and strut bolts all have to come apart before you can get at the bearing. From there you either drop the knuckle and use a shop press, or leave it on the car and use a hub tamer style puller kit. Both work; the press gives a cleaner, squarer install, the puller kit saves you separating the strut.

The one thing people get wrong is the ABS encoder ring. It is a magnetic strip built into the inboard seal of the bearing, and it is easy to nick with a punch, scrape on the bench, or install facing the wrong way. The result is a car that drives fine but lights up ABS, VSA, hill-start assist and sometimes the EPB, and you get to do the whole job twice. The second most common mistake is reusing the staked axle nut โ€” buy a new one with the bearing.

Differences within the 2022-2024 generation

Tool sizes are the same across the whole 11th-gen range: the 2.0L K20C2 (LX/Sport) and 1.5L L15B7 turbo (EX/Touring/Si) share the same front knuckle, hub bearing, 32 mm axle nut, 19 mm lug nuts and 12/17 mm caliper hardware. Si and Sport Touring hatch cars have larger front rotors and a different caliper bracket, but the bracket bolt size and the bearing itself are unchanged. Wheel bolt pattern is 5x114.3 on all 11th-gen Civics.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, and crack the 19 mm lug nuts loose while the wheel is still on the ground.
  2. Un-stake the spindle nut collar with a pin punch, then break the 32 mm nut loose with a breaker bar while an assistant holds the brake pedal (wheel still on the ground).
  3. Jack the front of the car at the front jack point, set jack stands under the pinch welds, and remove the wheel.
  4. Remove the 10 mm bolt and unclip the ABS wheel speed sensor harness from the knuckle; move it aside so it cannot be pulled or cut.
  5. Remove the two caliper slide bolts (12 mm), lift the caliper off, and hang it from the spring with a bungee โ€” do not let it hang by the hose.
  6. Remove the two caliper bracket bolts (17 mm), take off the bracket, back out the two JIS #3 rotor screws (impact driver helps) and pull the rotor.
  7. Remove the 32 mm spindle nut completely and discard it.
  8. Disconnect the stabilizer link (14 mm nut, 6 mm hex to hold the stud), the outer tie rod end castle nut (17 mm, remove cotter pin), and the lower ball joint castle nut (17 mm, remove cotter pin). Separate the tapers with a separator tool.
  9. Remove the two strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts (17/19 mm) and slide the knuckle off the driveshaft splines. Tap the axle stub through with a soft-faced hammer if it is stuck; never let the driveshaft hang by the inner joint.
  10. Bench method: press the hub flange out of the bearing, remove the inner snap ring, then press the old bearing out of the knuckle from the outboard side. On-car method: use the hub tamer kit to pull the hub and then the bearing without removing the knuckle.
  11. If the bearing inner race stayed on the hub flange, split it off with a bearing separator and press.
  12. Clean the knuckle bore with a wire brush and brake cleaner, check it for scoring, and apply a very thin film of anti-seize or bearing mounting compound.
  13. Press the new bearing in squarely, pressing only on the outer race, with the magnetic encoder ring (dull, darker seal face) toward the inboard side. Fit the snap ring with the flat face outward.
  14. Press the hub flange into the bearing while supporting the bearing's inner race โ€” supporting the outer race at this point will destroy the new bearing.
  15. Refit the knuckle to the strut and driveshaft, fit the ball joint and tie rod, torque all fasteners to spec and install new cotter pins.
  16. Fit the new spindle nut, torque it with the wheel on the ground and the brake applied, then stake the collar into the driveshaft groove with a punch.
  17. Reinstall rotor, caliper bracket, caliper, ABS sensor and harness clips. Pump the brake pedal until firm before moving the car.
  18. Refit the wheel, torque lug nuts to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern, then road test at low speed and confirm no ABS/VSA warning lights.

Watch out

Lug nuts (19 mm), caliper slide (12 mm), caliper bracket (17 mm) and the general strut/ball joint hardware sizes are reliable for the 11th-gen Civic, but confirm the axle nut size (32 mm on most Honda applications, some are 36 mm) and all torque values against the Honda service manual for your exact year and trim before final assembly.
