Front brakes on the 11th-gen Civic are one of the friendliest jobs on the car. It is a single-piston sliding caliper on the 2.0 and 1.5 turbo, the bracket comes off with two 17 mm bolts, and there is nothing electronic to disable because the parking brake motors live on the rear calipers only. If you can remove a wheel you can do this in an afternoon with a basic metric socket set, a torque wrench and a piston spreader.

The two things people get wrong are the rotor retaining screws and the hub face. Those small screws seize and strip if you attack them with a loose-fitting bit, so use an 8 mm hex socket or a hand impact driver and take your time. And if you bolt a new rotor onto a hub with a rust ridge still on it, you will get brake shudder within a few thousand miles and blame the rotors - wire-brush the hub until it is bare metal before the new disc goes on.

Differences within the 2022-2024 generation

The 2.0 K20C2 and 1.5 turbo sedans and hatchbacks use the same fastener sizes - 19 mm lugs, 12 mm caliper pin bolts, 17 mm bracket bolts - with roughly 282 mm front rotors. The Si uses larger front rotors (about 312-315 mm) but the same caliper fastener sizes. The Type R (FL5) is different: two-piece 350 mm front rotors and a Brembo four-piston fixed caliper where pads come out the top, so you need the pad pin/retaining spring procedure and should confirm its caliper bolt torque from Honda data.

How the job goes

  1. Park on level ground, chock the rear wheels, leave the car in Park with the electronic parking brake ON for now, and crack the front lug nuts a half turn each.
  2. Jack the front at the reinforced pinch-weld point and set jack stands under the designated side lift points. Remove both front wheels.
  3. Check the brake fluid level before you start; if it is at MAX, remove a little with a syringe so pushing the piston back does not overflow the reservoir.
  4. Remove the lower caliper guide pin bolt (12 mm), then the upper. If a pin turns with the bolt, hold the pin flats with a 14 mm wrench.
  5. Swing the caliper off the bracket and support it with a bungee from the spring or strut. Do not let it hang on the hose.
  6. Slide the old pads out of the bracket and pull the two stainless pad retainer clips off the bracket ledges.
  7. Remove the two 17 mm bracket bolts from the steering knuckle and lift off the bracket.
  8. Back out the two rotor retaining screws with an 8 mm hex socket, or a hand impact driver if they are seized. Strike the rotor face with a dead blow to break it off the hub if it is rusted on.
  9. Wire-brush the hub face completely flat and clean, then wipe with brake cleaner. Any rust ridge here causes runout and brake shudder.
  10. Spray the new rotor both sides with brake cleaner to strip the shipping oil, wipe dry, put a thin smear of anti-seize on the hub register only (never the friction face), and fit it with the retaining screws snug.
  11. Refit the caliper bracket with the 17 mm bolts and torque to spec. Clean the pad abutment ledges, file off any burrs, and fit the new retainer clips with a light film of caliper grease.
  12. Compress the caliper piston fully back into the bore with the spreader or C-clamp, using an old pad as a pressure plate. Inspect the piston boot and guide pin boots for tears.
  13. Pull each guide pin, clean it, apply fresh silicone caliper grease, and reinsert. Fit the new pads with any wear-indicator on the inboard side per the kit instructions and grease the backing plate ears lightly.
  14. Lower the caliper over the pads and install both 12 mm pin bolts to spec.
  15. Repeat on the other side, then refit the wheels and torque the lugs to 80 ft-lb in a star pattern.
  16. With the wheels back on the ground, pump the brake pedal 8-10 times until it is firm before moving the car. Recheck fluid level.
  17. Bed the new pads in: from about 35 mph do 6-8 moderate stops down to 5 mph without coming to a full stop, then drive several minutes without using the brakes to cool them.

Watch out
