Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2019-2024 Ram 1500

Moderate · 20-45 minutes per side (add 20 minutes if you remove the headlamp assembly) · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. H11 low-beam bulb (halogen trucks)
  2. 7 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  3. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  4. Ratchet with 6 in extension
  5. Plastic trim/clip removal tool

On the DT Ram 1500 the low-beam bulb itself is a 10-second twist-and-pull job — the problem is getting your hand to it. Tradesman and Big Horn trucks with halogen reflector lamps use an H11 low beam and a 9005 high beam, and both sit behind rubber caps on the back of the housing. Depending on trim and how much plumbing is crowding the corner, you may reach it blind from the engine bay, or you may have to pull the plastic cover above the grille and unbolt the headlamp to get a straight shot.

The single most common mistake is buying bulbs for a truck that does not use them. Laramie, Longhorn, Limited and Rebel trucks frequently came with full LED headlamps, which have no serviceable bulb at all — the entire assembly is replaced. Look at the back of the housing first: round bulb caps means halogen, a sealed casting with a big connector and heat sink means LED. Second most common mistake is touching the new halogen glass bare-handed, which kills the bulb in a few months.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

Tool sizes and bulb types do not change with engine — 5.7 Hemi eTorque, 3.6 Pentastar eTorque and 3.0 EcoDiesel all use the same headlamps. The difference is trim: halogen reflector lamps take H11 low / 9005 high, while factory LED lamps have no replaceable bulb and are serviced as a complete assembly.

How the job goes

  1. Turn the headlights off, put the truck in park, and let the lamps cool — halogen bulbs and housings get hot enough to burn.
  2. Confirm what you have: if the low beam is a small clear projector or a row of LED reflectors with no bulb caps on the back, it is an LED lamp and there is no replaceable bulb. If the housing back has round rubber-sealed caps, it is halogen (H11 low, 9005 high).
  3. Open the hood and look at the back of the headlamp housing. On some trims you can reach the low-beam socket directly: rotate the connector/bulb assembly about a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  4. If you cannot get a hand in (common on the driver's side next to the airbox and on the passenger side next to the coolant bottle), remove the plastic radiator/engine cover panel above the grille — 7 mm bolts and push-pin clips — to open up room.
  5. For full access, remove the headlamp: take out the upper 7 mm bolts along the top of the lamp, the inboard bolt behind the grille edge, and the outboard/lower fastener near the fender. Some trims add a screw reachable from inside the wheel liner.
  6. Ease the headlamp forward. It locates on plastic guide pins — pull straight, do not pry against the fender or bumper paint, and stop if it feels hooked.
  7. Press the lock tab and unplug the harness connector, or leave it plugged and just pull the lamp forward enough to work behind it.
  8. Twist the low-beam bulb holder counterclockwise, withdraw it, and unplug the bulb from its connector.
  9. Put on gloves, fit the new H11 into the connector, insert it into the housing, and rotate clockwise until it clicks/stops. It only seats one way — do not force it.
  10. Add a small dab of dielectric grease to the connector, reseat it fully, and make sure the rubber gasket is flat so water cannot enter the housing.
  11. Test the low beam, high beam, and turn signal before reassembly.
  12. Refit the headlamp on its guide pins, start all bolts by hand, then snug them lightly — the bosses are plastic. Reinstall the radiator cover and any clips, replacing broken push pins.
  13. Check aim against a wall or garage door at about 25 ft; if the assembly was removed, compare the cutoff height side to side and adjust with the housing's aim screw if needed.

Watch out

H11 low beam / 9005 high beam and 7 mm and 10 mm hex-head fasteners are correct for the halogen DT Ram 1500, but fastener count and exact locations vary by trim and bumper package, so check your own truck before buying and verify torque values in the FCA service information.

Frequently asked

What low-beam bulb does a 2019-2024 Ram 1500 use?

Halogen-equipped DT Ram 1500s use an H11 low-beam bulb and a 9005 (HB3) high beam. Trucks with the factory LED headlamp package have no replaceable low-beam bulb.

Do I have to remove the headlight assembly to change the bulb?

Not always. On many trucks you can reach the low-beam socket from the engine bay, especially on the passenger side. If your hand will not fit past the airbox or coolant bottle, pulling the plastic cover above the grille and the headlamp's 7 mm bolts makes it easy.

Can I put LED bulbs in my halogen Ram headlights?

You can physically fit H11 LED bulbs, but the reflector is designed for a halogen filament, so the beam scatters and glares at oncoming traffic. They are also not DOT-legal in most places and can cause bulb-out or interference issues.

Why does my new bulb keep burning out?

Usually skin oil on the glass from installing bare-handed, a connector that has overheated and lost tension, or water in the housing from a bulb cap gasket that was not seated. Check the connector for browning and the housing for moisture before fitting another bulb.
