Tools you need for headlight bulb on a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V

Easy ยท 20-40 minutes for a halogen bulb; 1-1.5 hours per side for an LED assembly swap ยท Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. H11 low-beam bulb (halogen trims)
  2. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive
  3. 1/4 in ratchet with 3 in extension
  4. Phillips #2 screwdriver
  5. Nitrile gloves

On the 5th-gen CR-V, this job is either a ten-minute twist-and-go or a non-starter, depending on trim. Halogen cars โ€” mostly the LX โ€” use a plain H11 low beam you reach from the engine bay. The catch is clearance: the driver's side is crowded by the air intake duct/resonator and the passenger side by the washer filler neck and coolant bottle, so most people end up pulling one 10 mm bolt and a couple of plastic clips to get a hand back there.

The thing people get wrong is buying bulbs for an LED car. If your CR-V is an EX, EX-L, Touring or any Hybrid, the low beam is a sealed LED module with a heat sink โ€” there is no bulb inside, and the fix is a complete headlight assembly. Check the back of the housing before you order anything. Second most common mistake: grabbing the halogen glass with bare fingers, which kills the new bulb in weeks.

Differences within the 2017-2022 generation

Bulb type tracks trim, not engine: 1.5T LX and 2.4L LX (2017-2019) use halogen H11 low beams and 9005/HB3 high beams, while 1.5T EX and above plus every Hybrid use sealed LED low beams with no replaceable bulb. Fastener sizes are the same across all of them โ€” 10 mm heads and Phillips/push-pin plastic fasteners โ€” but the 1.5T's intake resonator layout on the driver's side is slightly tighter than the 2.4L's.

Torque specs

Headlight assembly mounting bolts (10 mm head)verify in the service manual (small 6 mm bolts โ€” snug only, roughly 7 ft-lb / 9 Nm)
Intake resonator / air duct bracket boltsverify in the service manual (hand-snug, approx. 7 ft-lb / 9 Nm)
Bumper cover and fender liner fastenersverify in the service manual (plastic fasteners โ€” snug by hand)

How the job goes

  1. Confirm which headlight you have: look at the low-beam projector. Halogen cars (mostly LX) have a bulb with a plug you can twist out from behind; EX and up and all Hybrids have sealed LED units with a cooling heat sink and no serviceable bulb.
  2. Turn the headlights and ignition off. Open the hood and let the lamp cool if it was just on โ€” halogen bulbs run hot enough to burn.
  3. Driver's side: disconnect or unbolt the plastic air intake duct/resonator ahead of the airbox (one or two 10 mm bolts plus push clips) and set it aside to open up a hand-sized gap behind the headlight. On some builds you can reach past it with a small hand and skip this.
  4. Passenger's side: move the windshield washer filler neck aside (10 mm bolt at the top on many builds) and, if needed, unclip the coolant reservoir to gain room behind the housing.
  5. Reach behind the low-beam position (the inboard projector), squeeze the connector lock tab and pull the wiring connector straight off the bulb.
  6. Rotate the H11 bulb roughly a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing. Note its orientation before it comes free.
  7. Wipe the new H11 with alcohol, handle it by the plastic base only, and insert it into the housing so the tabs line up, then rotate clockwise until it locks with a click.
  8. Push the connector back on until the lock tab snaps. Do not force it on rotated โ€” the H11 plug only fits one way.
  9. Turn the low beams on and check the new bulb before reassembling anything.
  10. Refit the intake duct, washer filler neck, coolant reservoir and any clips you removed. Replace any broken push pins.
  11. If a bulb is very hard to reach, the alternative is removing the headlight: two or three 10 mm bolts on top and at the inner edge, plus the fender liner and bumper corner fasteners, then pull the housing forward off its locating pin.
  12. LED trims only: the entire headlight assembly is replaced. Loosen the front bumper corner (fender liner screws, wheel-arch clips, 10 mm bolts), unbolt the assembly, transfer the connectors, then reinstall and check beam aim with the vertical adjuster.

Watch out

H11 low beam and 9005/HB3 high beam are correct for halogen 5th-gen CR-V models, and all fasteners in this area are 10 mm heads with Phillips/push-pin plastic fasteners; exact bolt counts for the intake duct and washer neck vary slightly by model year and market, and all torque figures should be confirmed in the factory service information.

Frequently asked

What low-beam bulb does a 2017-2022 Honda CR-V take?

Halogen-equipped trims (mainly LX) use an H11 55W low-beam bulb, with 9005/HB3 for the high beam. EX, EX-L, Touring and all Hybrid models use sealed LED low beams with no replaceable bulb.

Do I have to remove the bumper or headlight to change the bulb?

Usually not on a halogen car. Most people get to the H11 from the engine bay after moving the intake duct (driver's side) or the washer filler neck (passenger's side) with a 10 mm socket. Removing the headlight assembly is only a fallback if you can't reach the socket.

My CR-V has LED headlights and one side is out โ€” can I just buy a bulb?

No. The 5th-gen LED low beam is a sealed module inside the housing, so the factory repair is a complete headlight assembly, which is a pricey part. Before buying, check the fuse and connector, since a bad ground or connector can mimic a dead LED.

Can I install LED conversion bulbs in the halogen CR-V headlights?

You can physically fit H11 LED bulbs, but the projector was designed around a filament, so the beam pattern and cutoff suffer and you glare oncoming drivers. They're also not DOT/ECE legal in a halogen housing in most jurisdictions.
