On a 14th-gen F-150 with halogen headlamps this is a cheap 20-minute job, but Ford packed the engine bay tight. The low-beam H11 socket sits at the inboard rear of the reflector housing, and depending on side and engine you'll be fighting the air cleaner outlet tube on the passenger side or washer plumbing and harness looms on the driver side. Plenty of people just unbolt the whole headlamp — three or four 7/8 mm hex-head screws and a lower bracket — because it's faster than working blind with one arm.
The one thing people get wrong is buying bulbs for a truck that doesn't take them. Most 2021-2024 F-150s above base XL/XLT trim left the factory with LED reflector or LED projector headlamps, which are fully sealed assemblies with no serviceable low-beam bulb. Look behind the lamp first: if you see a rubber dust boot and twist-lock sockets, you have halogen. If it's a solid sealed back with a single connector, you're replacing a module or the whole housing.
| Item | Type | |
|---|---|---|
| Nitrile gloves Disposable Skin oil on a halogen bulb's quartz envelope causes early failure. | Safety | shop |
| LED work light or headlamp Rechargeable The bulb socket sits deep behind the housing with almost no light. | Recommended | shop |
| Socket set 7, 8, 10 mm 6-point, 1/4 in drive 7 mm and 8 mm hex-head screws hold the grille trim, radiator air deflector and headlamp flange; 10 mm for the lower bracket/bumper fasteners if you pull the lamp. | Required | shop |
| 1/4 in drive ratchet Standard and stubby, plus 3 in and 6 in extensions Reaching the upper headlamp screws and the air box bolts in a tight bay. | Required | shop |
| Flexible-head or wobble extension 1/4 in drive wobble extension Lets you reach the inboard headlamp screw without removing the grille. | Recommended | shop |
| Plastic trim removal tools Nylon pry set Release the push-pin clips on the radiator cover, grille trim and wheel-arch liner without breaking them. | Required | shop |
| Flat-blade screwdriver Small, 4-6 mm tip Pops the wiring connector locking tabs and helps lift clip heads. | Recommended | shop |
| Torx driver T20 / T25 Some inner fender and air deflector fasteners on early build trucks use Torx heads. | Recommended | shop |
| H11 halogen bulb H11 55 W low beam (halogen headlamp trucks only) The low-beam bulb itself; replace in pairs so beam color and output match. | Parts | shop |
| 9005 / HB3 bulb Optional, high beam on halogen trucks Handy to change at the same time since the housing is already open. | Parts | shop |
| Isopropyl alcohol wipes 70-99% Clean any fingerprints off the new bulb glass before installing. | Consumables | shop |
| Dielectric grease Silicone, small tube Light dab on the bulb connector to keep moisture and corrosion out. | Consumables | shop |
| Push-pin clip assortment Ford-style 8 mm push retainers Radiator cover and grille clips break easily on removal. | Consumables | shop |
| Torque wrench 1/4 in drive, 2-20 Nm range Only needed if you removed the headlamp assembly — the plastic flange strips easily. | Recommended | shop |
| 10 mm wrench or socket For battery negative terminal Disconnect the battery if you are unplugging LED modules or working near the fuse box. | Recommended | shop |
| Masking tape and marker Mark the existing beam position on a wall so you can verify aim afterward. | Consumables | shop |
The bulb and fastener sizes are the same across 2.7 EcoBoost, 3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0 V8 and 3.5 PowerBoost. The only difference is access: the EcoBoost and PowerBoost trucks have a bulkier intake tube and turbo plumbing crowding the passenger-side lamp, so expect to loosen the air cleaner outlet; the 5.0 V8 gives slightly more room but still benefits from moving the airbox. Trim matters more than engine — LED headlamp trucks have no bulb to change.

The H11 low beam / 9005 high beam combination and the 7/8/10 mm hex-head fastener sizes are standard for the 2021-2024 halogen-equipped F-150, but Ford changed headlamp suppliers mid-generation, so pull your old bulb and read the base or check the Owner's Manual bulb chart before buying, and verify all torque values in the factory service manual.
Halogen-equipped trucks use an H11 55 W low beam and a 9005/HB3 high beam. Confirm by reading the base of your old bulb or the bulb chart in the Owner's Manual, since Ford changed housing suppliers during this generation.
No. The LED reflector and LED projector headlamps are sealed units; the low-beam LEDs and driver are integrated. Ford services them as a complete assembly, which is why they run several hundred to over a thousand dollars each.
Not strictly, but on most trucks it's the easier path. Many people can reach the inboard low beam from the wheel-well side or after lifting the air cleaner box; if your hand won't fit, pull the radiator air deflector with a 7 mm socket and the headlamp screws with an 8 mm.
It will light up, but the beam pattern will be scattered and glaring because the reflector is cut for a filament, and the BCM may throw a bulb-out message or flicker. If you want LED performance, swap to the factory LED headlamp assemblies and the matching harness.
