Must-have tools
  1. 10 mm socket, 1/4 in drive, with extension
  2. Plastic trim/panel pry tools
  3. Push-pin clip removal pliers
  4. #2 Phillips screwdriver, stubby or ratcheting
  5. Ratchet, 1/4 in drive

If you searched for a low-beam bulb for your 2019-2024 RAV4, here is the short version: there isn't one. Toyota made LED low-beam projectors standard across the XA50 line, and the LED chips plus their driver module are sealed inside the headlight housing. When the low beam goes dark the fix is a complete headlight assembly, which on this car means loosening the top of the front bumper cover and the fender corner to get the housing out โ€” a couple of hours of careful plastic-clip work rather than a five-minute bulb swap.

What does unbolt easily is the high beam on LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Adventure trims: a 9005/HB3 halogen behind a round access cap on the back of the housing, reachable from the engine bay. The mistake people make is assuming a dark headlight means a dead bulb, ordering an H11 kit off the internet, then tearing the bumper apart for nothing. Stand in front of the car and check which element is out first โ€” low beam, high beam or DRL โ€” because they are three different repairs.

Differences within the 2019-2024 generation

The 2.5 L A25A-FKS and the hybrid share identical headlight housings, brackets and fastener sizes, so the tool list does not change between them. The real difference is trim: LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Adventure use an LED low beam with a replaceable 9005/HB3 halogen high beam, while Limited (and TRD Off-Road/Prime-style top trims) use full-LED housings with no serviceable bulb at all and often auto-leveling, which makes housing choice and aiming more critical. Hybrid models place the 12 V auxiliary battery and coolant reservoir slightly differently, so driver's-side rear access to the high-beam cap can be tighter.

Headlight assembly mounting bolts (10 mm head)verify in the service manual (typical small Toyota body bolt, roughly 5-7 Nm / 45-60 in-lb)

How the job goes

  1. Confirm what actually failed: turn the headlights on with the engine running and check whether the low-beam LED projector, the halogen high beam, or the DRL/turn signal is dark. A dead low beam on an XA50 means the assembly or its module, not a bulb.
  2. If only the high beam is out on LE/XLE/XLE Premium/Adventure, skip to step 10.
  3. For assembly replacement: turn the ignition off, open the hood, and disconnect the 12 V battery negative terminal (10 mm nut) to avoid arcing the headlight connector. On hybrids this is the 12 V auxiliary battery in the engine bay.
  4. Remove the plastic push rivets and 10 mm bolts along the top edge of the front bumper cover and the radiator top cover using clip pliers and a 1/4 in ratchet.
  5. Turn the wheel away from the side you are working on, then remove the Phillips screws and clips joining the front bumper cover to the wheel arch liner and fender.
  6. Gently pull the bumper cover corner outward to release the hidden hook clips behind the fender. Support the corner or have a helper hold it โ€” do not let it hang on the harness.
  7. Remove the three 10 mm headlight mounting bolts (one on the upper inner corner, one on the top outer, one on the lower outer bracket). Some trims add a bracket bolt behind the bumper corner.
  8. Ease the housing forward, press the harness connector lock tabs and unplug the low-beam/DRL and turn-signal connectors. Cheap aftermarket housings often use different connectors โ€” compare before ordering.
  9. Fit the new assembly, plug in all connectors, start the bolts by hand so the locating pin seats in the fender, then snug them evenly. Reinstall the bumper cover and all clips, reconnect the battery, and check every lighting function.
  10. High-beam bulb: reach behind the housing from the engine bay. On the driver's side move the coolant reservoir hose aside; on the passenger side work around the washer filler neck. Remove the round rubber/plastic access cap by twisting counter-clockwise.
  11. Squeeze the connector lock and pull the plug straight off the 9005 bulb, twist the bulb counter-clockwise about a quarter turn, and withdraw it.
  12. Handle the new 9005 bulb by its plastic base only, wipe the glass with alcohol, insert and twist clockwise until it locks, reconnect the plug with a dab of dielectric grease, and reseal the access cap fully so water stays out.
  13. Park 25 ft from a flat wall and compare the new headlight's cutoff height and side position to the untouched side. Adjust with the vertical adjuster gear on top of the housing if needed, or have a shop aim it.

Watch out

I am confident the XA50 low beam is a non-serviceable sealed LED on all trims, that the halogen high beam is a 9005/HB3, and that the mounting and bumper fasteners are 10 mm with some 12 mm bracket bolts; verify exact bolt count, bracket sizes and all torque values against the Toyota repair manual for your model year and trim.

Frequently asked

What size low-beam bulb does a 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 take?

None โ€” the low beam is a sealed LED projector built into the headlight assembly on every XA50 trim. Listings claiming an H11 or 9006 low beam for this car are incorrect.

How much does it cost to fix a dead low beam on a RAV4?

An OEM headlight assembly typically runs several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on trim and whether it has auto-leveling, plus 1.5-2 hours of labor. Quality aftermarket housings are cheaper but can trigger headlight system warnings on trims with auto high beams.

Can I replace the RAV4 high-beam bulb without removing the bumper?

Yes. The 9005/HB3 high beam on LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Adventure is reached from the engine bay through a twist-off cap on the back of the housing โ€” about 15 minutes per side with just gloves and maybe a screwdriver to move a hose aside.

Do I have to remove the front bumper to replace the whole headlight?

You don't need to take the bumper fully off, but you must remove the push clips and 10 mm bolts along its top edge and the Phillips screws at the fender/wheel liner so the corner can be pulled outward to clear the housing and its lower bracket bolt.
