Tools you need for oil change on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry

Easy · 45-60 minutes (first time 75 minutes because of the undercover) · Updated 2026-09-14
Must-have tools
  1. 64 mm 14-flute oil filter cap socket
  2. 14 mm socket, 3/8 in drive
  3. 10 mm socket for undercover bolts
  4. Torque wrench, 3/8 in drive
  5. Oil drain pan, 8 qt minimum

The XV70 Camry is an easy oil change with one wrinkle: there is no spin-on filter. All three engines - the 2.5L A25A-FKS, the hybrid A25A-FXS and the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 - use a paper cartridge in a plastic housing on the front of the block, and you need a 64-65 mm 14-flute cap socket to open it. You also have to drop the plastic lower engine undercover (10 mm bolts plus push-pin clips) to reach anything, which is what turns a 20-minute job into an hour the first time.

What varies is oil: the 2.5L and hybrid are spec'd 0W-16 at roughly 4.8 quarts with filter, while the V6 takes 0W-20 and about 6.4 quarts. The two things people get wrong are reusing the aluminum drain-plug crush washer and cranking the plastic filter cap down by feel - 18 ft-lb is all it wants, and the O-rings in the filter kit are what actually seal it.

Differences within the 2018-2024 generation

Fastener sizes are identical across the generation: 14 mm hex drain plug, 64-65 mm 14-flute filter cap, 10 mm undercover bolts. Only the consumables differ - 2.5L and hybrid take 0W-16 and about 4.8 qt with filter element 04152-YZZA1/31090; the 3.5L V6 takes 0W-20 and about 6.4 qt with element 04152-31080. The V6 filter housing sits slightly deeper behind the undercover and is easier to reach with a short extension.

Torque specs

Engine oil drain plug (14 mm hex head)30 ft-lb (40 Nm)
Oil filter housing cap18 ft-lb (25 Nm)
Oil filter housing drain plug (inside cap)9 ft-lb (13 Nm)
Lower engine undercover bolts (10 mm)约 7 ft-lb (9 Nm) - snug only, verify in the service manual

How the job goes

  1. Run the engine 3-5 minutes so the oil is warm but not scalding, then shut it off. On a hybrid, make sure the READY light is off and the car cannot start the engine while you are underneath.
  2. Chock the rear wheels, lift the front with the jack at the factory front jack point, and set jack stands under the pinch welds or subframe. Do not work under a car on the jack alone.
  3. Remove the lower engine undercover: 10 mm bolts around the perimeter plus several plastic push-pin clips. Keep the fasteners separated - the clips break if you pry them with a screwdriver.
  4. Position the drain pan, loosen the 14 mm drain plug with the ratchet, then finish by hand so the plug does not drop into the pan. Let it drain 10-15 minutes.
  5. Move the pan under the cartridge filter housing at the front of the engine. If you have the Toyota drain tool, remove the small plug in the center of the cap and fit the drain pipe to dump the housing oil into the pan first.
  6. Fit the 64-65 mm 14-flute socket on the cap and unscrew it counterclockwise. Lower it straight down, pull the old element out of the cap, and note the small O-rings.
  7. Replace the large housing cap O-ring and the small drain-plug O-ring from the filter kit. Wipe the housing sealing face clean and smear fresh oil on the new O-rings.
  8. Install the new element in the housing, hand-thread the cap, then torque to 18 ft-lb (25 Nm). Reinstall the housing drain plug at 9 ft-lb (13 Nm).
  9. Fit a NEW crush washer on the drain plug, thread it in by hand, and torque to 30 ft-lb (40 Nm). Do not lean on it - the pan is aluminum.
  10. Add oil through the filler cap: about 4.5 qt for the 2.5L and hybrid, about 6.0 qt for the V6, then check the dipstick. Top up to the upper mark - do not overfill.
  11. Start the engine, let it idle until the oil pressure light is out, and check the drain plug and filter cap for leaks. Shut off, wait 5 minutes, recheck the level.
  12. Reinstall the undercover, lower the car, and reset the maintenance reminder: with the ignition on and trip A displayed, hold the odometer/trip reset button while turning the ignition off then on, or use Settings > Vehicle > Maint. Data on the touchscreen models.
  13. Recycle the used oil and filter element at an auto parts store or municipal collection site.

Watch out

The 14 mm hex drain plug, 64-65 mm 14-flute cartridge filter cap and 10 mm undercover bolts are correct for all XV70 Camry engines; verify the exact oil capacity and filter part number for your VIN on the underhood label or in the owner's manual, since 2.5L, hybrid and V6 differ.

Frequently asked

What size socket is the oil filter cap on a 2018-2024 Camry?

A 64-65 mm, 14-flute cap-style socket on a 3/8 in drive fits the plastic filter housing cap on the 2.5L, hybrid and 3.5L V6. The drain plug is a 14 mm hex head.

How much oil does an XV70 Camry take?

The 2.5L A25A-FKS and the hybrid take about 4.8 US quarts (4.5 L) with a filter change; the 3.5L V6 takes about 6.4 US quarts (6.1 L). Always confirm on the dipstick rather than pouring the full amount in blind.

Can I use 0W-20 instead of 0W-16 in the 2.5L Camry?

Yes - Toyota lists 0W-20 as an acceptable substitute if 0W-16 is unavailable, and you should return to 0W-16 at the next change. Do not go heavier than 0W-20 in the A25A engine.

How do I reset the maintenance light after the oil change?

With the ignition on and Trip A showing, turn the ignition off, hold the trip/odometer reset button, turn the ignition on and keep holding until the display shows 000000 or the wrench icon clears. On models with the larger touchscreen you can reset it under Settings > Vehicle > Maintenance.
